To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR. BATES, a subject of Great Britain, residing at Leicester, Leicestershire, England, have invented cer- 5 tain Improvements in Cutting Machines,
of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is
a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to cutting machines and more particularly to cutting machines designed to cut sheet material by the use of freely movable dies.
The invention is disclosed in connection with a machine of the type shown in Patent No. 921,503, granted May 11, 1 909, to Arthur Bates. As usually constructed this machine comprises a support or cutting bed for the stock, a freely movable die designed a to be selectively positioned upon the stock on the cutting bed, and a presser member so mounted that it may be oscillated to bring it intO operative position over the die and depressed to ef ect a pressure applying operation on the die. It is an object of the invention to provide an improved machine of the class described which will operate in such manner to insure clean cutting of the stock under all conditions and especially when operating upon particularly heavy ma? terial or upon fabrics in a multiplicity of layers. The invention is applicable also to machines which embody wooden cutting blocks, wherein the cutting of sheet fabric or leather even when relatively light sometimes presents difliculties due to unevenness or inequalities in the cutting surface of the block or cutting bed.
In one aspect the invention consists in the provision of means for effecting a plurality of pressure applying operations upon a die to cause the die to out completely through the stock upon a single actuation of the starting or controlling means of the machine. Preferably the means just described Will be so constructed as to cause a pressure applying operation and amovement of separation of the presser members of less 50 extent than the movement of applyingpressure, and then an automatic ifs-application of pressure in the same cycle of operations of the machine. In the illustrative embodiment of the invention, a rod 22 is fixedly attached to the lower end of the vertically reciprocable post 8 and is extended downwardly a considerable distance below the lower end of the post. Pivoted to the lower end of the post 22 is a pair of bell-crank members 24, a pin 26 providing the connection between said members and the rod, the latter being pro vided with an enlarged bearing portion 28 through which the pin 26 is passed. To the upper end of each bell-crank member, there is pivoted, by means .of a pin 30, a llnk 32 which in turn is pivoted'at34'to the frame of the machine. The two linksv and the two bell-crank members just described provide a double toggle mechanism operatively con nected to themain shaft of the machine to be operated thereby by means of a pitman 36 eccentric 42 on the main shaft 17;

This movement of separation ofth'e presser memhers is followed by the re-application of ressure u on the die throu h a second and P a shorter stroke ofthe presser member as the toggle mechanism returns to straightened position after having moved beyondcenter. My invention contemplates that the second stroke. may become practically the equivalent of the first stroke in its extent and duration when the working conditions make it necessary ,,or desirable 'so to construct the .machine. In such a construction. the togglewill be broken more or less equal distances on each side of its straight position so that it is twice straightened for each single revolution of the eccentric shaft resulting from a single actuation of, the starting or controlling handle on the presser the ordinary brake band 44 surrounding a brake collar 46 on said main shaft and having its ends attached adjustably to an arm 48 fixedly mounted upon the counter shaft 50, the said shaft being provided with a second arm 52 having its forward forked end 53 secured to the pin 26 which passes through the lowerend of the bar or rod 22. The arrangement is such that as the toggle mechanism begins to straighten, thus lowering the post 8, the arm 52 is oscillated to re lease the tension on the brake band 44 so that the latter is slackened during the rotation of the main shaft, then, as the toggle mechanism is broken, the same arm 52 is rocked so that at the termination of the upward movement of the presser member, the brake is applied to prevent further rotation of the shaft, whereby the presser member is maintained at the upper limit of its movement.
In operating with the machine just de'-' scribed, the operative places a sheet or sheets" of material, such, for instance, as fabric, leather or leatherboard, upon the cutting bed 4 and places the die 55 in selected position upon the material. During the positioning of the die, the presser member 6 is disposed at one side of the cutting bed in order to permit of freedom of movement of the die and access of proper light to the work. The operative swings the presser member over the die and causes pressureapplying movements of the presser member by depressing the handle 16 on lever 14. In the same cycle of operations, the presser sionally happens that the first stroke on the material in order to insure clean cutting of blanks from the material. Since it occasionally happens that the first stroke on the die does not accomplish the separation of the blank from the material, a second stroke of the presser member may be depended upon to efiect this result. The organized machine has the advantage of producing two strokes of the presser member upon one depression of the controlling or starting lever for the machine, whereas 111 the ordinary or commercial form of the clicking machine, the operative is requiredto depress the starting lever once for each pressure-applying movement of the presser member. While the construction may be such that the second pressure-applying movement of the presser member may be practically equivalent to the first, it is preferable that the second stroke be very much shorter in order that no displacement oi the presser member relatively to the die may take place.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1; A press constructed to stop automatically at the end of each cycle and having in combination presser members relatively movable toward and from each other in pressure-applying operations on work located between the presser members, and means for causing a plurality of pressure-applying operations in each cycle of the machine.
'2. A press having presser members relatively movable toward and from each other in pressure-applying operations, on work located between the presser members, and means comprising manually operable controlling means for causing in each cycle of the machine a plurality of pressure-applying movements to insure the desired effect on the work upon a single actuation of the controlling means.
3. In a machine or the class described, presser members relatively movable toward and from each other in pressure-applying operations, and means for causing a pressure-applying operation, a movement of separation of less extent than the movement of applying pressure, and then a second movement for the application of pressure all in the same cycle of operations of the machine.
4. In a machine or" the class described, presser members relatively movable toward and from each other in pressure-applying operations, and means for causing a pressure-applying operation and a movement of separation of less extent than the movement of applying pressure and then an automatic I'G-QPPllCELtlOIl of pressure in the same cycle of operations of the machine.
5. In a machine for operating on work by means of a die, a cutting bed, a presser member movable toward and from said cutting bed in pressure-applying operations to force the die into the work, and means comprising a toggle mechanism for causing the application of pressure to a die on the cutting bed, the relief of said pressure and the re-application of pressure upon the die all in the same cycle of operations of the machine, to insure that the die will be forced completely through the work in each cycle 01 the machine.
6. In a machine of the class described, a cutting bed, a presser member movable toward and from said cutting bed in pressure-applying operations, and means com prising manually operable controlling means "for causing upon actuation of the controlling means a relatively long movement of approach of the presser member with respect to the cutting bed, then a relatively short movement of retraction and approach, and linally a relatively long movement of separation from the cutting bed, all in the same cycle oi operations of the machine.
7. A press constructed to stop automatically at the end of each cycle and having in combination a cutting bed, a presser member movable toward and from said cutting bed in pressure-applying operations, and means comprising a toggle mechanism operatively connected to the presser member for causing the presser member to approach the cutting bed in the pressure-applying operation, the said toggle mechanism being movable beyond center to cause retraction of the presser member and returnable to central position to cause the re-application of pressure by the presser member.
8. In a machine of the class described, a cutting bed, a presser member movable to ward and from said cutting bed in pressure-applying operations, and means comprising a toggle mechanism operatively connected to the presser member for causing the presser member to approach the cutting bed in a pressure-applying operation on a die, the said toggle mechanism being movable beyond center a relatively short distance to cause retraction of the presser member to relieve pressure upon the die, and returnable to central position to cause the re-application of pressure on the die by the presser member.
9. In a machine of the class described, a cutting bed, a presser member oscillatable over the cutting bed and also movable toward and from the cutting bed in pressure-applying operations, a. post carrying said presser-member, and means comprising a toggle mechanism directly connected to said post for causing the pressure-applying operations of the presser member by the operation of the toggle mechanism.

In a machine of the class described, a cutting bed, a presser member oscillatable over the cutting bed and also movable toward and from the cut-ting bed in pressure-applying operations, a. post movably carrying said presser member, a rod fixedly attached to and extending from said post, and means comprising a toggle mechanism attached to said rod for causing pressureapplying movements of the presser member by the straightening of tlre toggle.

In a machine of the class described, a cutting bed, a presser member oscillatable over the cutting bed and also movable toward and from the cutting bed in pressure-applying operations, a post movably carrying said presser member, a rod fixedly attached to and extending from said post, and a toggle mechanism operative to move the presser member by the straightening of the toggle, said toggle mechanism comprising links pivoted to portions of the frame of the machine and to the lower end of said rod.

In a machine for cutting blanks from sheet material by the use of freely movable dies, presser members relatively movable toward and from each other in pressure-zap plying operations upon a die positioned on the sheet material tobe cut, and means comprising a toggle mechanism for causing said pressure-applying operations constructed and arranged to be straightened to cause a pressure-applying movement of the movable pr esser member, to move beyond center to cause'separation of the presser members and to return to the straight line position to cause a second pressure-applying movement, to insure that the die will be forced completely through the material during each cycle of operations of the machine.

In a machine of the class described, presser members relatively movable toward one another in pressure-applying operations, a post for carrying one of said presslower end of said post, a bell-crankpivoted to the lower end of said rod, a link pivoted to the upper end of said bell-crank and to the frame of the machine, thus forming a toggle mechanism, and means" operatively connected to the bell-crank to cause straightening of the toggle mechanism and a pressure-applying movement of the movable presser member.

In a machineof the class described, a cutting bed, a presser member movable toward and from the cutting bed in pressure-applying operations, a post carrying said presser member, a main shaft, means comprising a toggle mechanism operated from said shaft and directly connected to said post for causing the pressure-applying operations of the presser member, and brake mechanism for said shaft directly operated from said toggle mechanism.
