useful Improvements in Centrifugal Cast-x ings, of which tion.
The present is a companion application to the application by the same inventor entitled Casting tubular goods, filed July 18, 1921, Ser. No. 485,698, Div. 3, Room 175, in which all claims have been found allowable. Like the former application, it refers to the casting by centrifugal means of goods from metals which chill very rapidly, such as Monel metal and various steels.
All attempts to cast them into shapes of comparatively thin sections have failed because the metal chilled too rapidly, often before it had time to form into a pipe. The present invention provides a process wherein the mold is heated to a hi h temperature, close to the melting point of the inetal to be the following is a specificapoured. This hot mold. is then placed into;
a metal frame or sheath, to give it the neces sary mechanical support and is, with its frame or sheath, subjected to centrifugal spinning, whereupon the metal is poured Application filed February 24, 1922 Serial No. 539,031.
into the mold. The molten metal coming in contact with the very hot mold does not lose its heat with the same Speed as when. it hits a cold mold, and enough time becomes available-to form a good tube.
The temperature to which the mold has to be heated should be close to the: melting point of the metal which means in practice from 300 to 800 deg. Fahr. below it, depending on conditions in each case. The proper selection of the temperature in each case is a matter which a good foundryman with an understanding of the present process can easily handle.
I claim: A process of centrifugal casting comprising the following steps: heating the mold to a temperature close to the melting po1nt of the metal to be poured, inserting the mold into a metal sheath to give it mechanical strength, subjecting the whole to centrifugal spinning, and pouring molten metal into the mold.
