Description
Application meci tctober' 13 13 21. fcriei To all whom if may comes m:
Be it. known that I, ANTON Mnmmc, e subject ot the King of Setvu and resident o'f East Pittshurgl', in the county ei Allegheny and State ot Pennsyivuniu, have iivehtedp a new and useful improvement in Methods ot Making Phesphor Copper; and I do herehy deolare the following to e full, clear, and exact (leseription'thereot. My invention relates to ;i process ef malting phospho coppe' One of the Chief (liiiculties in the making "of phosphor-copper has heeh the introduction ot' the phosphorus into the metal. Heieto- :Core the best method of adding phosphorus to the n'elted metal is by means of u phos` phorize'. This is a cluy OT graphite tube fastenecl to the end of an, iron red. The sticks of phospherus are put into the tube, and seine means is provided for closing the l end of the tube to hold the phosphorus sticks phosphotizer cun he ill@ phos- `the'ein until the phosphorus has been ahsorhed. This inannei' ot' introducinr the ;'h'sphorus results in the spettering of the metal and consequently Waste of same, and at the same time is ettended With danger 'to the Workmen.
The object oi my' inventiou is to provide for the introduction ot the phospho'us in *such u manne' as to avoid the above (litfiouities and ut the same time m'eviile :for 9 A the retaining of the proper pereentuge of phosphorus in the finished product.
In the acconpanying drawing i have shown a suitable turuuoe for carrying out m'y process, and l will now deserihe the same in detail With reference to said clruwing.
l euiploy :in ordinary m'uoible 2 formed of gruphite or other suitable material. in the bottom of the crucible I place a. certain quantity of Copper turnings 3 of a light quality. On this mass of Copper turnings 3 i may sp'inkle a small quantity of soda-ash 4. 01' equivalent material, which will tend to retarcl the reduction of the phosphorus whieh I introduce in the` form ot. e cake The phosphoi'us is molded into the form of u cake instead of in stick form, and as the cake is of less diameter than the oruoihle I am eiabled to completely embed the phosphm'us in the Copper which is then introduce& in the form ht millings (L some sode-ash, however, being sprinkied over the top of the ceke before the millings are produced. lt will be seee that the millings fest epon the turnings 3 and. surround the ceke of phospho'us so that it is completely embedded, i
On top et the millings 6 i iitto luce cop-- per in the 'toi-ni of loose turhings '1',1 or even in the form of supper wire.
The crlcihle 2 charge in this mehmet is then iuti'odueetl into fui'iiace S which is of ordinary Construction., the erueihle testing upon the block The fuel employee foiheating-the furnace is introduce& at the nozzle 10, and it tiesirecl tuel oil :ne-y be employed which is turned or o'n by the velve ll, the amount of oil being reguiete by the Valve 12, a suitable quantity ot' uii' being supplied by e suitable velve (hot shou'nh The Copper is meited by the action ot' the heat and the phosphorus which melts ut a .much lower temperutuie melts first, and being: completely snrrouuded hy the-eopper which melts slower is cohfined. and %lot permitted to escape. The soda-;ish acts to reta'd to a certain extent the mel ting of the phesphorus. By embedding the phosphorus in the copper and melting it therewith the spatte'in and weste 0% metal is aveided.
Under ordinary heating conditions it Will teke about :in hour to mel& the Copper, and when it is ieduced to e nolten couciition it is stirred to get un even distribution of the phospho'us throughout the entire .mass of metal.
Vi'hile i have indicate& the prefe'able inunner and toi-m of iiitrodueing the phospho'us, I (io not wish to limit the invention to this particule' -wayof introdueing it, oi' the't'oi'm, as tuat may be Varierl without clepa'ting from the spirit of my invention.
i'i hen the Copper and phospho'us have been nelted to form the phosphor copper the crueibie is removed from the filmave and the molten alloy is poured into suitable molds to form it into ignots 01' ather n'esire shepes.
l Vhat- I claim is:
1. The process of torning phosphor-copper eonsist ing in embedding the phosphorus in a mess ot' Copper in solid form and ap plyiuz heut to melt the same.
2. The process ot to'ming phosphor-copper consisting iu embedding the phosphorus iu the fot-in of u cake in e mass of supper in solid toru and upplying heut to :nelt the. Copper and phosphorus.
3. The process bf lei-min phosphor-copper. consstng in pacing a quantity nf (ropper in a (i ucibie, placing a cake of' phasphorus upon the capper of lessdzuneter 'Haan the c'ucble, 'super-posing a. mass of i, cepper on the cake, and embeddmg the same thzwmgnd pplyng heart to melt the copper :m p'hsuho'us.
The process of fo'mng hosphur-copper consstmg m placng p osphmus m
