Formed on the feed screw at its outer end is i a squared terminal 26 with which a wrench or ratchet may be engaged for rotating said SCI'GW.
In order that the operation of my improved tool may be accurately understood I have, in the drawings, shown the device in connection with the back head 27 of a locomotive boiler. proved plug, as shown in my co-pending application, the back head is first i'ormed with a circular plug opening 28 therethrough. The tool of the present invention is then employed to form a beveled seat at the inner end of this opening. To accomplish this operation, the cutter section 15 is, as shown in Figure 5, first threaded to the outer end of the extension 13 of the feed screw when the cutter section 16 is then' moved away from the section 15 so that the section 15 may, as also suggested in this figure, be inserted through the opening 28 in. the back head.
This done, the feed sc'rewis rocked to insert the section16 of the cutter through said opening in a similar manner. By manually pulling outwardly upon the feed screw until the section 16 contacts the inner side of the back head at the opening 28, interlocking with the section 15 of the cutter, the feed screw may then be rotated clockwise for threading the cutter section 15 inwardly upon the extension 13 of the feed screw until, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the section 16 of the cutter is jammed against the shoulder '14. The shell 10 is then positioned over. the opening 28 at the'outer side of the back head for centering the cutter with respect to said opening and the feed nut adjusted for binding the cutter against the rim of the opening at its inner end. Consequently,'as will be seen, a wrench or ratchet may then be applied tothe terminal 260i the feed screw for rotating this screw and revolving the cutter to form a beveled seat at the inner end of the opening, the nut 24 being, of course, adjusted as desired to feed the cutter to the work. Since, as previously noted, the beveled cutting faces of the cutter sections will, when the cutter sections are assembled, form practically a continuous annular cuttingsurface, chattering of the cutter will be eliminated while the cutter will operate to form a smooth beveled seat at the inner end of the opening through the back head,- As
To accommodate my imthe cutting operation progresses, oil may be applied to the cutting faces of the cutter through the openings between the foot lugs 11 ofthe shell 10 and, of course, the progress of the Work may also be observed through these openings. To remove the tool, the feed nut 24 is first loosened and in orderv to tacilitateseparation of the sections of the cutter I provide, as shown in Figure 6, a wrench 29. The shank of this wrench is curved laterally at its inner end portion and is provided with a depending head 30. After loosening the feed nut 24, the shank of the wrench 29 is inserted through one of the openings between the foot lugs 11 of the shell and the head 30 of the wrench engaged in one of the angles between the .projecting end portions of the cutter sections. Consequently, the cutter section 15 may then be readily held stationary so that the feed screw 12 may be rotated counter-clockwise for threading said sectionto the outer end of the extension 13. Then, by moving the cutter section 16 inwardly away from the cutter section 15 the feed screw may be rocked for withdrawing first the section 16 and thenthe section 15 through the opening in the back head and releasing the tool.
Having thus described the invention, what I i is claimed as new is 5'v v 1. A. tool for forming a plug seat at the inner end of a boiler sheet opening including'a feed screw, means engageable with the outer side of the sheet for supporting the screw, and a cutter carried by the screw and engageable withthe peripheryof the opening at the inner side of the sheet, the cutter being formed of interlocking sections.
