Description

G. l. GILCHREST.
Patented Nov. 14, 1922.
INVENTOR Gear e/Zr/zk flaw/2x252.
1 BY J Patented Nov. 14, 1922- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE IRVING G'l'll'at'iflBEST, OF WILKINSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WEST- INGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OI PENN- SYLVAN IA.
INSULATOB.
Application filed October 8, 1918. Serial No. 257,884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gaonon IRVING GIL- OHREST, a, citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wilkinsbur in the county of Allegheny and State of ennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Insulators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to insulators of the pin type and particularly to the pins there- One object of my invention is to provide a device of the above-indicated character that shall be rugged and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and efiective in operation.
Another object of my invention is to provide an insulator pin of wood or other suitable material that shall be protected from damage, such as charring, from corona and static or flash-over discharges thereon.
Another object of my invention is to provide an insulator pin of readily-machinable material, such as wood, that may be turned or machined to any of many different shapes without the expense, time or labor required to perform the same 0 rations on a metal pin and have substantially the advantages of both a metal and a non-metallic pin.
A further object of my invention is to provide an insulator in of wood or other material subject to eterioration .by exposure to the weather or other influences, with a metal protective coating that shall prolong the life and maintain the effectiveness of the pin.
In practicing my invention, I provide an insulator pin of wood or other non-metallic material havin a metallic coating that may be electrolyticaIly deposited, sprayed, painted or otherwise placed thereon.
The single figure of the accompanying drawings is a v1ew, partially in side elevation and partially in section, of an insulator havin a supporting pin embodying. my inventlon.
An insulator 1 may comprise superposed members 2 having petticoats 3 and support a conductor 4 by means of a tie wire 5 or other suitable device. A pin 6, havingscrew-threaded portions 7 and 8 at its upper and lower ends, respectively, may supcover the pin 6 and be posited, sprayed, painted,
than metal.
Further, an insulator pin of this character may be considerably li hter in weight than an all-metal pin and be less likely to crack the porcelain insulator by reason of the unequal expansion and contraction of metal and porcelain.
While I have shown and described a particular form of my invention, many changes may be effected therein without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A support for an insulator comprising a pin hav' g a wooden core and an outer metallic protective sheathing, whereby said core is rendered impervious to moisture and fire resistant.
2. A support for an insulator comprising a pin having a fibrous core and an outer metallic protective sheathing, whereby said core is rendered fire resistant.
3. A support for an insulator comprising a pin having a core subject to deterioration by moisture and an outer metallic protective sheathing whereby said core is rendered im pervious to moisture.
4. A support for an insulator comprising a pin having a fibrous core and an outer electrolytically deposited metallic protective sheathing, whereby said core is rendered impervious to moisture and fire resistant.
5. A support for an insulator comprising 7. A support for an insulator comprising sheathing covering exposed portions of the a pin having a fibrous core and an outer core. electrolytically deposited metallic protective In testimony whereof, I have hereunto 10 sheathing covering the entire core. subscribed my name this 30th day of Sept.
8. A support for an insulator comprising 1918.
' a pin having a fibrous core and an outer electrolytically deposited metallic protective GEORGE IRVING GILCHBEST.
