T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WVILLIAM H. FRANCIS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Cherryvale, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented a. new and Improved Base, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to a base, and aims to provide an improved construction in connection with a device of this character, more particularly adapted for use in association with the method and apparatus for handling bricks, as brought out in my copending application Serial #431,988, filed December 20, 1920, it being noted, however, that the base herewith proposed is not limited to this particular adaptation.

My base aims to provide a member serving to retain a carrier in applied position with respect to a supporting surface upon which elements or objects to be carried are arranged, the elements being so disposed that the carrier may be subsequently manipulated to have all of the articles to be carried moved from their supporting element to a position at which they will lie upon the carrier.

Although the base proposed in connection with my co-pending application before referred to lends itself to advantage in connection with the method proposed, and the apparatus utilized, I have found that it would be to advantage to provide a supporting means serving to retain the vehicle or carrier utilized in applied position with respect to the supporting element upon which the objects to be carried are stacked.

It will be noted that a construction such as has been proposed will relieve the operator of having to utilize care in manipulating the vehicle, in that no danger of the same slipping will exist.

Having these and other objects in mind reference is had to the attached sheet of drawings as illustrating one practical embodiment of my invention, and in these drawings it will be noted that- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a base constructed in accordance with my invention, and being utilized.

Figure 3 is a sectional side view taken along the line 3-3 and in the direction of the arrows indicated in Figure 2.

As aforestated, my invention although applicable to various uses, is primarily intended to be used in connection with'the method and apparatus proposed in my copending application, and'with this in view, the embodiment illustrated shows certain of the apparatus depicted in connection with said application.

In this connection attention is invited to Figure 1 in which the reference numeral 5 represents the vehicle comprising the carrier, which includes wheels 6 and handles 7 and 8, the latter permitting of the body of the vehicle being tilted so that the stacked objects, such as bricks 9 may be readily transferred thereto.

Reference being had to Figures 2 and 3, it will be noted that my improved type of base includes apair of side members 10 which preferably diverge, and are connect ed together by means of tranversely extending end pieces 11 and 12.

It will be seen that one of the end pieces 12 also includes a raised portion 13 terminating in an inclined strip 14, this portion serving as a rest for the stacked objects 9, andpermitting of their being arranged in aninclined plane corresponding to the plane of the body of the carrier, when the same is in its proper position upon the base.

Now with a view of providing means serving to prevent a movement of the carrier, it will be noted that I utilize a pair of blocks or any other suitable elements 15 arranged upon the side members 10, and serving as stops for the wheels 6, to prevent their moving beyond the position indicated in Figure 1, it being also noted that the end piece 11 serves to prevent accidental movement of the carrier rearwardly with respect to the base.

From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a base which may be uti lized to advantage in preventing a movement of a carrier with respect to objects being stacked, said objects being subsequently disposed upon the body of the carrier.

It will also be appreciated that numerous modifications of structure might readily be resorted to such as would be necessary according to the use to which my base is to be put, and without in the least departing from the scope of my claims, which are- 1.
