LOCK NUT. APPLICATION FILEI? AUG8. I92|`- Patlmtd 0st. 249 11922.,
. WITNESS:
locking members.
Patented Zidi-9 i922.,
. noon nur.
. .application .tiled August 8, 11921. Serial No. 490,662,
To all fro/'tom may conce/ru s lie it known that l, liosnnr Lne llassannn, a citizen of the United. States, esiding at lis/iarble, in the county ot Clarion and State of lijeni'isylVania,` have invented ne useful lmprovements in lioclr Nutsj of which the 'toliovvinpv is a specification.
d s invention relates lto devices tor prevent] i nuts from becomingv loose on their' bolts, the general object et the invention beinol to provide movable parts carried by the boit tor engaging notches in the nut for liolding` the nut against rotation, with means tor moving' the said movable parts into and out of operative position.
Another object of the invention is to provide the bolt with a bore through which the operative means for the locking` members extend and with which con'imunicate slots in the sides of `the bolt tor receiving the This invention also consists in certain other 'features of construction and in the `cmnbination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims. y i i ln describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accouipanying,` drawings wherein like Vchareters denote like or correspendingl parts throughout the several views, and in` which .Figure it is a longitudinal sectional View through a bolt and nut supplied with my invention.
Figure 2 is a section on line 22 ot Figure l. i
lligure 3 is a detail view.
`ln these views i indicates the bolt which is provided with `the bore 2 which `entends entirely through the stein and head oit the nut. liecesses are 'formed on the `head and these recesses communicate with the bore. A transverse opening1 4t is formed in the screw-threaded Vpart of the nut and thisopeninp; communicates with the bore. The nut` is provided with a plurality ot notches 6 in its outer. t'ace. it stem 7 lits in the bore and a` pair oit locking; members 8 are pivotally secured to the inner end oi said stem, these members being` adapted to en vthe vo pa rts oi the opening` t with their ends projecting through said opening,` :tor enough e; the notches in the nut. The stem hase handle part 9 rotatably secured and .Y
to its outer end by means of the slot and pin connection l0, said handle part hai/'ing a head l1 which is adapted to engage the recesses 3 when. the parts are 'to be held in a position with the locking;- members in operntive position and to be moved outwardly and given a quarter turn to hold it in this outward position when the locking members are to be moved. into an inoperative position. A. coil spring' 12 has one end connected with the inner end ot the stem i" and its other end connected with a cross pin 'i3 in the bore, this spring tending; to hold the stem and its handle member within the bore. A coil spring la, located in the bore. has one endrestingaogainst the locking members and its other end against the pin, this spring tendingto torce `the locking; members through the two parts ot the opening when the stem and handle member are in their inner position. y
lt will thus be seen that by pulling the handle member outwardly and giving; it a quarter turn the locking members will be pulled out ofi the two parts ot the opening and turned so that they `will engage a solid part ot the wall 'ot the bore. By turning the part so that the head will engage the recesses 3 the springs will pull the stem and handle inwardly and at the same time torce the locking members outwardly through the opening so that they will be ready to engage the notches in the nut.
i lt is thought from the foregoing;` description that the advantages and novel features ot my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood tha-J l may make changes in the construction. and in the (':oinbina-tion and arrangfgement oit the several parts7 provided that such changes tall within the scope oi the appended claims.
l. .in combination with a bolt having` a bore with a slot in its walls and a nut, a movable member in said bore. spring means for holding` the member in its .inner position, a part on the movable member for holding` the same in its partly withdrawn position, a locking member on the movable member and spring` means for forcing the same through the slot to engage the nut when the movable member is in its inner position.
2. in combination with a bolt `and its nut,
said bolt having` a longitudinally extendingr here having` an enlarged part 'in the head oi thel bolt and slots in its walis passing through the screw threaded part of the holt, a stein in the bore, a pair of locking inemhers pivoted to the stem and adapted to pass through the slots for engaging the nuts, a 5 handlev part movably attached to the stem and having a head for engaging the enlarged part of the bore when the etem is in its inner position and for engaging the head of the bolt to hold the stein in its outer position, a spring for holding the stein in its inner position and a spring engaging the looking members lor Yforcing the Sanne through the slots.
ln testimony whereof l allix my signature.
ROBERT LEE PASSAUER.
