It will be understood that the car is constructed so as to provide a nun'iber of dumping openings on opposite sides of the centersill, these openings being normally closed by hinged bottom sections or doors which are manipulated by apparatus which forms no part of the present invention and which, therefore, has been omitted from the drawings. This invention concerns the construction of a door suitable for use in a car of this type, or with other dumping cars where similar conditions prevail.
The door consists of a sheet metal panel 15 preferably, although not necessarily, composed of ay single sheet of metal. The door sheet, as it may be termed, is formed with a kcentral corrugated portion 16 and at one edge is hinged to the center sill 10 (the hinges being indicated at 17). marginal portions-18, 16 of the door sheet and the sider marginal portion 19 thereof `which bears against the under side of the inturned part 20 of the side sheet 12 are in the same plane, thatis, the original plane of the sheet before it is pressed. The corrugated portion 16 of the sheet is formed by pressing therein, in parallel arrangement, a plurality of ribs which alternately project above and below the original plane of the sheet. Those projecting upwardly preferably have their crests in a plane at the level of the cross bearer cover plates 14 and the intervening. center sill cover plates (not shown). v.The hinged margin 22 of the sheet is depressed to the level of the bottoms of 4the. depressed corrugations. this arrangement any moisture will drain olf along the depressed edge 22 of the plate instead of being trapped as would be the case if both ends of the corrugations were below, the level of the adjacent uncorrugated margins. The corrugations are lmade to terminate within the edges of the sheet so that they will give it rigidity. l The configuration 'of the sheet as shownfalso adapts it to ht snugly in place underthe center sill and side sheets. The center ysill is shown as consisting in part of T-beam 23 and inA order that the door may project under the upper flange of this T- bearnthe extremitiesof the marginal portions 18 adjacent the center sill are"de pressed, as indicatedat 24, to the level of the marginal portion 22 ofthe sheet'. To give additional strength and rigidity to the door its edges are formed with downturned flanges 25. In addition a rigidifying structure is provided for. the lunder side of the door comprising angle bars 26 running parallel with the corrugations and secured by rivets 27 to the marginal portions 18 of the door'and tothe flanges 25, with the interpositin of spacers 28, by rivets 29, together with a'Z-bar 30 secured to the members 26 The end and to the door sheet and extending across the ends of the corrugations and angle bars 3l. near the opposite edge of the door which are riveted to the door at suitable intervals.
rlhis application is a division of my copending application Serial No. l-57,907, tiled November lll, 1919.
