To all whom may concern:
I Be it known that I, Anasn'r E. Pnnunur, a citizen of Fran residing ctSan Francisco, in the coun 1 of an Francisco and State of California, are invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Spark Plugs, of
which the ollowing is s specification.
My invention is on improved spark pin for gas on es, characterized by n specie explosion c amher,- insuring, on accountof its 'tion a. perfect spark and doing away wi missings, whatever the speed of the engine or the compression of the fluids used in the motor.
Referring to the annexed drawing whichplliig.
igum 4 is a fragmentary sectional view of a portion of a modified form of my plug.
In the drawing 1 indicates an insulating body of porcelain. mice or other suitable refractory material and 2. a motel jacket formed with an inclined shoulder 8 against which rests the inner end 4 of bod 1 which is correspondingly inclined to fit oulder 8. A gasket 5 is interposed between the shoulder 3 and the inclined body end 4. The body 1 is formed with an annularshoulder 6 intermediate its ends and to. are from said shoulder to its outer end. metallic ring 7 of cop er, aluminum, or other suitable ma.- terial w ich is shock proof and moisture proof, surrounds the outer cred portion ofthe body 1 and rests upon t e shoulder 6.
In the preferred form of my invention shown in Figure 1 the jacket 2 is formed with an annular lip 8 on its outer end which is bent over the ring 7, whereby the bod 1 is held securely in position within the in et 2. The body 1 is formed with a central lonitudinal bore 9 througlrwhich extends an e ectrode 10, which has an annular cmlioss ment 11 near its lower end which fits within and rests inst the end of an enlargement 12 of the fibre 9 in the inner end of the body 1. A spring washer 13 fits over the outer end of. the electrode 10 upon the 'outer end of the body 1. A slifhtly oompreihle washer 14 of copper, c uminu or other suitlble mltel'ial, ts over the .o tor and of tween 1 electrode 10 upon spring washer 18. The outer end of the electrode is threaded and a nut 15 screws thereon against the washer 14 which draws the embossment 11 against the inner end of the bore enlargement 12 and holds the electrode properly within the body 1. ,The inner end of t a jacket 2 is form with an externally threaded ni pic 16 which screws into the cylinder of the engine to support the plug in position therein. partition 17 extends across the nipple 16,
owning; speciail explosion chamber 18 be- IE and the inner end of the body 1. In the preferred form of my invention (Fig. 1) the partition 17 extends at an angle to e n i pie wall and converges toward 'e center 0 the nipgde away from the inner end of body 1. aid partition is rovided with a. central opening 19 through w oh the inner end of the electrode 10 extends. Sold o nin is preferabl elongated as shown in ip. 3 at me be 0 any suitable shape.
n the mo ified form of my invention shown in F 2, the upper end of the jacket 2 is provide with on internal thread 20 into which screws a nut 21 against the ring 7. the nut being provided with an outwardly converging opening 22 throu h which extends the outer tapered end 0 the body 1. The nut cornprsssm the ring 7 forces the shoulder 4 a inst s oulder.8 and securel holds the ho y 1. within the 'acket 2. In this modified form 0 my inveu on the partition 17 is perpendicu or to the wall of nipple 16. The s ark takes place between the inner end. of t e electrode 10 and the edge of'tho ogening 19 of the partition 17 which forms t a other electrode, the partition bein m constructed and placed as to easily pro use a perfect spark between the sent of the electrode and its extremi without any missings' During the exp osion the is retuined within the eciel explosion chamber 18 sufiiciently to urn the walls thereof clean, thus pre ventiglii deposits of carbon upon the chamber w 1 The compression effected inside the special explosion chamber facilitates the perfect (:ilitntes the evacuation of consumed gas and of the carbonized matters. The evacuation of useless matter is facilitated by the clon-- My spark plug has been tested on vehiclev and aeroplane motors of 275 Hi P. and'GOO H. P. of different makes and on rotary motors of 130 H. P. In putting four of these spark plugs thoroughly dipped in oil on'a motor of six cylindersi or two spark plugs on :1 motor of fourcy inders, or one spark plu on a motor of two cylinders, they will be i i-9e of any useless matter and in perfect order after a few minutes rotation.
In the modified form of myplug shown in Fig. 4, I make the partition 17 separate from the nipple, but is mounted in an annular ring 25 on the inner surface'of.tl1e nipple, said ring being formed with a shoulder 26 against which enga es one side of the partition, and an annu or lip 27 which is bent against the other side of the partition.
The size of the opening 19 may be varied to vary the distance between the electrodes 1 v 'a jacket :in whic 1 positioned to provide a transverse partition in said jacket below said body forming an explosion chamber between it and said bed, and an electrode extending through sfl-id b ody, the explosion chambenand said opening, said partition being bendable to vary the area of the explosive chamber to the plug..'
2. In a spark, lug, .a body of insulation, said bod is mounted, a transverse partition in said acket below said body for formin an explosive chamber between it and sai body, said partition being provided with an elongated opening, and an electrode extending through said body, said explosive chamber'and into said opening of the partition to co-operate with the ed 9 of the opening to forms spark gap, said partition being bendable whereby the spark gap and the area of said chamber in the plug ma be varied.
n-testimony whereof I'ailix my signature.
