To. all whom it may concern.
7 Be it known that I, RUooLrn ZAnnznwsni, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Thorpe, in. the county of McDowell and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Newspaper Holders, of which the following is a specification. p
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in newspaper holders for holding the pages of a newspaper in substantially fiat open condition.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a portable device capable of being supported by a person in substantially the same way that a newspaper is usually held when being read whereby the newspaper is prevented from being blown out of position orallowed to become instantly wrinkled in any way sov that satisfactory reading of the newspaper may be had.
Another object of the invention is to provide a newspaper holder of the above kind which may be compactly folded so as to require very little space when not in use there by making .it practical, for a person to carry the same with him froniplace to place. v
A. still further object of the invention is to provide a newspaper holder of geuerally improved structure -which is simple and durable in construction as well as efficient in operation. i I
With the'above general objects in view and others that will appear asthe nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists of the novel form, combination. and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
'Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a newspaper holder constructed in accordance with the present invention,
-Figure 2 is a view of the device shown in Fig. 1 partly in elevation and partly in vertical section looking toward the left of Fig, 1. V
Figure 3 is a view of the device shown in Fig. 1 in front elevation withthe device partly folded,
' F igure t is horizontal sectional view taken substantially upon line IV-IV of Fig. 1,
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken upon line V-V of Fig. 1,
Figure 6 is an enlarged fragmentary sectio-nal view taken upon line VI-VI of Fig. 1, and t Figure 7 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken upon line VIL-VII of Fig. 3.
Referring more in detail to the several views, the present invention embodies a rectangular open frame composed of a main staff 5 andan auxiliary staff 6 connected in spaced parallel relation by upper and lower foldable pairs of pivotally connected links 7 and 8 respectively, the m'ain staff 5 being of stoutermaterial and longer than the auxiliary staff 6 so as to provide a lower handle portion 9 by means of which the device may be held if desired. The links 7 and 8 are so pivotally connected and attached to the staffs as to permit folding of the staifs upon each. other as shown in Fig. 3, while the staffs preferably consist of pivotally connected sections which may fold backwardly upon each other after the same have been collapsed as shown in Fig. 3, the pivotal connections of the sections of the staffs 5 and G'being respectively indicated at 10 and 11. The holder or frame, when in its expanded condition as shown in Fig. 1 is slightly smaller in dimensions than one page of a newspaper, two-pages of which are shown in Fig. 4 respectively at 12 and 13 which areusually connected along a vertical l ne lying coincident with a longitudinal groove 14 provlded in the front of the main staff 5, and the staffs and 6 are respect-.
ively provided with means for holding the newspaper in arrangement therewith. This means, w th respect to the main staff 5 preferably consists in a pair of hingedly connected clamping bars 15 and 1.6, the clamping bar 16 being substantially equal in length to the length of the uppersection of the staff 5 so that the pivotal connection 17 between the sections 15 and 16 occurs or is seated in the same horizontal plane as the pivotal connection 10 between the sections of the staff 5, the upper clamping bar 16 being pivoted at its upper end in the groove 14; and being of urshape in cross section so as to receive the lower clamping bar 16 when the latter is folded upwardly as shown in l ig. 7. it will be seen that the clamping bars 15 and 1 5 when disposed in open position within the groove Ll, will engagethe newspaper at the fold line between the pages thereof so asto'ell'ectivcly hold the newspaper in position, and in order to prevent accidental outward swinging ol the lower clamping bar 15, a collar 1Sis provided upon the handle 9. TI'iiSctillarlS is mounted for limited rotary movement upon the handle 9 by means 01 a pina'iid slot connection 19 and in such position as to overlie the lower end of the clamping hai' l5, while a notch 20 is provided in the collanor sleeve 18 so that when the latter is partially rotated, said notch 20 will be coincident with the groove l li'or permitting outward swinging of the clamping rod' should it be desired to release the newspaper. one or more springclasps 21 may be provided upon the staff 6 to engage the oiiter ejdges of the newspaper page so as to prevent accidental folding of said paper when the newspaper is clamped to the staff 5; in some cases one clasp 21 being sufiicient at the upper end of the staff 6 as shown above another such clasp may be placed at the lower end of the staff 6 if found desirable. Disposed within the lower end of the groove 14: is resilient strip or spring 22 arranged to {be engaged by the clamping bar 15 when the latter is engaged behind the collar 18so as to leave no playbetween the parts when the newspaper is-clamped in position andto force the lower end. of the clamping bar 15 into engagement with the collar 18 for preventing accidental rotation of the latter so as to preventaccidental release of the newspaper.
In operation, with the parts disposed as shown in Fig. 1, the collar l8 may be partially rotated until the notch 20 is coincident with the groove 14, whereupon the clamping rods or bars 15 and 16 may be swung outwardly of said groove to permit the proper positioning of thenewspaper as above outlined and as shown in Fig. 4-. \Vhen this has been done, the clamping parts are returned to the groove as shown in Fig.
land the collar 18 is reversely rotated so as to hold the clamping parts within the groove engaging the newspaper as shown in Fig. 4. The clasp 21 may then be engaged with the opposite edge of the-adjacent page of said newspaper and the latterwill thereby beeifectivcly held; in open position witliout wrinkles so that saidreading of thepa'per may be had irrespective of gusts of winder the like. \Vlien the deviceis no longer desired in use, the paper maybe readily re moved and the links 7 and 81oldedinwardly toward eacli other so as to bring the staffs 5 and 6 along 'side'each other asshown in F ig. 3. Should a' more"compacted-an ement be desired, the clamping bar .15 may be swung outwardly and upwardly until the same is folded within the upper clamping bar16 and then the two staff sections may be folded backwardly upon each other. From the foregoing description it is believed that the construction and operation as well as the advantages of the present invention will be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art.
Minor changes'r'nay be made without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.
In the preferred construction of the staff 55th}? sweetener-sci at thepivot 1O arecut out to" pro'vide a groove 25 in "which a plate 26 may be refriovahly positioned and which, when place, will hold the staff, sections against folding, althoughsaic'l sections may be" folded on the pivot 10 upon renioval of the plate 26.
1. newspaper 'holdilrgfrani' comprising a pair o'f spaced parallel staffs, and a plurality of foldably'connected pairs of links pivotally" conn'e'c'ting the upper and lower portions or saidst afi whereby the latter may be brought into juxtaposition upon'itolding of the links inwardly toward each other, said stafis comprising pivotally' connectcdsectionsfoldable backwardiy upon each other wlin the staffs are" in juxtaposition for presenting acornpact collapsed holder when not in use.
2. A newspaper-holding frame comprising a pair of spacedparallel struts, and a pluralityotfoldably connected pairsof links pivotally connecting theupper and lower portions of saidstaff whereby thelatter may be brought into j untapositionupon foldin of the links inwardly toward each other, said staffs comprising" pivotallyconnected sections foldable backwardly upon each other vvlieiithe staffs are in jllixta-pos'iti'on forpr esenting a compact collapsed holder when not ill use; one of said stafishaving alongitiidiiial groovefand bar'clainping means associated with said groove and" pivoted to said onestalff for engaging the fold line of a newspaper to clampthe latter to said one 'stafi', said bar clampingmeanscornprising a pair of foldably connected clam ing bars pivotally connected in a horizontal plane substantially the same as the pivotal connections between the sections of said staffs. I 3. A newspaper holding frame comprisin'g spanof spaced parallel staffs,- and'a plurality of foldably connected pairs of links" pivot'ally 'cbnnecting the upper and lower portions ofsaid'stafi whereby the latter may be brought into juxtaposition upon folding of the links inwardly toward e'ach other, said stafi's coimprising 'pi'votally con1'iected-s"e"ctions foldable'backwardly upon each other when the staffs are in juxtaposition for presenting compact collapsed "neotecl clamping bars pivotally connected in a horizontal plane substantially the same as the pivotal connections between the sections 10 of said stafis,,the upper clamping bar-being of U-shaped form in cross section whereby the lower clamping bar may be swung upwardly and outwardly thereinto.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature. 15
