To llwhmnztmagi/ concern# Be it known that 'L TRACY Re CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Uutremont, city 6 of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new land useful Improvements in Loose- Leaf indem, of which the following is a specification.,
rllhis invention relates to improvements in loose leaf binders, of the type having a retaining member formed with posts designed to extend through suitable perforations in the loose leaves and by which they .i are locked in position, and the objects of the invention .are to provide simple and edective means for positioning the loose leaves and retaining them in proper alignment, and generally to improve an 2o simplify the construction of the device and better adapt the various parts to perform the functions required of them. i

Re err'ing to the drawings; 10 and 11 indicate xed binding posts deto sied to extend through open slots 12 in the edge of each loose leaf sheet 13, each loose leaf sheet being provided with a plurality of open slots 12 to receive the hired posts and a plurality of closed slots or perforations 14 to receive the temporary posts 15 whereby, when the temporary posts are removed, the sheets will be free and may individually be adjusted, removed or replaced, or new sheets added.
lin the embodiment illustrated, two per. marient posts are' provided and three temporary posts, the temporary and permanent posts being arranged alternatively, and the outer and centre posts being temporary posts. All of the tem orary posts are connected together and hd in spaced parallel relation by means of a retaining member or bar to which the posts are fixed.

The temporary posts 15 are designed to extend through suitable perforations 19 in the bars 16 and 17 r)Phe retaining member B is designed to be held in engage position by spring released retaining means; the spring releasing means which l have designed comprising a Hat spring 20 secured beneath the member B an(` centrally thereof, and having its outer end turned downwardly slightly and adapted to bear againstthe bar 16 whereby the spring will tend to place the supporting member a short distance above the bar 16, and the turning of the sprin about the central posts being prevents by means of rivets 21 on opposite sides of the post.

rl`he locking bar D may be .retained in position against the bar 16 in any convenient way. l have shown it positioned on the underside of the bar in a channel, formed b a retaining bar 26 which is spaced a short istance from the underside of the bar 16 and suitably connected thereto. The bar D ma be formed with a slot 27 at one end throug which a connecting rivet 28 between the bars 16 and 26 may extend. The end of the locking bar D is preferably formed with a downwardlyturned prcection 29 by means of which it may be rea ily engaged.
The supporting member. C is preferably incorporated as part of a book, the back 30 of the book being connected to the back 18 of the supporting member, and the'covers 31 and 32 bein designed to lie parallel with the. bars 16 and 17. The cover 32 is formed with a exible portion 33 designed to extend over the retaining member B whereby there will be no terior of the boo lt will be 'seen from thel foregoing that,
when the parts are assembled as shown inv 'Figure lthe retaining member B may be released y longitudinal movement of the v v bar D; upon being released will spring upwardly by action of the spring 20, when it may be grasped and` remove en removed, the sheets 13 will all be tree, and may be adjusted, removed, or added to, itV desired.l To lock the sheets in positin, the retaining member is returned to position, the lower ends of the temporary posts being pointed to facilitate their insertion, and the lockingbar Dsplringin into locking position as soon as t e notc es 23 pass beneath the bar 16.
As many'changes could be madein the above construction and. many apparently widely dijerent embodiments of my inven tion within the scope of the claims, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it 1s intended that all matl ter contained in the accom anying specification and drawings shall e interpreted as illustrative and'not in a limiting sense.
What l claim-as my invention is:
1. In a binder, a supporting member comprising a single piece of channel metal formed with upper and lower Hanges, a retaining member having temporary posts extending through the danges, and a liat spring on the underside of the retaining member adapted to normally retain it in position a short distance removed 'from one ot the anges, and lookin means adapted to hold the retaining mem er in engaged position. i

4. In a binder and in combination, a nona single piece of channel metal formed 'with parallel upper and lower flanges and with a back portion, permanent posts connecting the flanges, a retaining member having temporary posts extending through the anges, and manually releasable means for holding the retaining member in engaged position.
5. ln abinder a supporting` member, comprising a single piece 'of 'channel metal formed with upper and lower danges, a redistensible supporting` member formed from taining member havin temporary posts eX- tending through the anges, spring` means on the underside of the retaining member adapted to normally retain it in a position a short distance removed from one of the f Hanges, a slidable locking bar mounted on one of the Hanges adapted toengage and lock against one of the temporar posts.
6. ln a binder, a binder comprising a solid non-distensible supporting member formed vne with upper and lower ianges, and with a yback portion, permanent dposts connecting and bracing the flanges, an adapted to form .a gulde against which the sheets in the book ranged on the outside of the supporting member havin temporary posts extending through one o? the flanges, and adapted to lock the sheets inposition -in the binder, and
