Application filed. April 1,
and useful Improvements in Door Fasteners,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door fasteners, and more especially for doors for garages, barns, and the like, where it is desired to swing the doors outwardly at approximately 90 from the position when closed. The
principal objectof my invention is to provide a door fastener which will securely hold the door in a set position, andwhich may be easily manipulated. 1
Another object is to provide means for adjusting the device so that the fastener will hold the door at a degree less or greater than 90 from the position when closed.
to be understood that in adapting the. same to meeting different conditions, various changes in the form, and-minor details of construction, may beresorted to without departing from the nature of theinvention, as claimed and set forth in the drawing.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a door-way, with a doorsecured thereto, and showing the device in a position which secures the door when open.
Figure 2 is a sectional view of Figure '1. taken on line 2-2, which shows a topplan view of the door fastener installed, securing the door in an open position. i
FigureB isa detail view of the device showing a securing member.
Figure 4 is a side view of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a detail view partly in section showing the automatic stop shown in Figures 3 and 4. l a By referring to Figure 1 it will be seen that I have shown a side Wall 1 of a build ing provided with a door jamb 2. To this door jamb 2 there is secured a door 3 held by means of hinges 4.
By referring to Fi ures 1 and 2 it will be seen that my door astener is attached to a door in an open position, or in a position approximately 90 degrees from the position when closed.
Attached to the door jamb 2, l have provided a bracket 5 having an outturned arm cured by swinging downwardly The drawing illustrates the preferred embodiment of the invention. ,However, it is 6. To this outturned arm 6 there is secured a holding arm 7 by means of a bolt 8 pass ing through the arm 6 in such a manner that the bolt 8 forms a pivot for the holding arm 7.
By referring to Figure 2 it will be seen the holding arms 7 is provided with an in- Serial No. 548,804.
turned curved end 9 having a plurality of holes 10 in order to adjust the range of the swing of the door to meet requirements for fastening the door. The holding arm 7 is provided with an outer end 11, carrying a slidable pin 12 which slides in the slot 13 of a bracket 14, which is attached to the door 3, at point 15, so that when the door is in an opened position the slidable pin 12 is at the inner end 16 of the slot 13. When the door is in the position as shown in Figures l and 2, or open, the door may be sei into a vertlcal position, a securing arm 17 which is pivotally attached to a bracket 18 by means of a pivot pin 19. When the securing arm 1"? is placed in this vertical position, the end 20 comes in close contact at point 21 of the holding arm 7. This holding arm 7 is preferably made of an angle iron having the outer portion of the same in a vertical position so that the end 20 of the securing arm 17 finds a parallel plane for engagement.
border to keep the holding arm 7 from a tendency to turn or twist when in close engagement with the end 20 above mentioned, I have provided a reinforcing member 22 secured within the angle of the holding arm Tat point 21 of the holding arm '7. Wheniit is desired to release the door so that the same may be closed, the operator swings the securing arm 17 to the right in order that said securing arm 17 may take a position as to be directly over the bracket 18 and in a horizontal position. In order that the securing arm 17 may remain in this po sition until desired for securingthe door when opened, I have provided a spring controlled latch member 23 which functions with an opening 24 formed in the bracket 18. 7
What ll claim 1s:
In a device of the class described, a holding arm pivotally mounted to a bracket at tached to a door jamb, the inner end of said holding arm being inwardly curved and provided withv a plurality of holes for adjust ing, an outer end of said holdingarm proholding arm, a securing arm pivotally at-v tached thereto, means for holding said securlng arm in a. horlzontai position when not in position for fastening door, substantlally as described for the purpose set forth. 10 In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
JOHN R. KIEL.
