IMPROVEMENT lN SHOE-FAOTENINGS.

specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 143,148, dated September 23, 1873 application filed March 27, 1873.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE B. HART, of Buffalo township, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shoe-Fastenings; and do hereby declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of a shoe-front with my improvement attached.v Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are modifications of the loops or eyelets.

The nature of this invention relates to an improvement in shoe-fastenings where strings are employed. The invention consists in the peculiar constructionand arrangement of the fastenings for securing the string or lacing, as more fully hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings, A A represent the two sides of a shoe-front, above the instep; and B, a section of the shoe from the instep. O is a metallic plate, cast, cut, or

- struck to shape, secured by small rivets, or in any other convenient way, and it is provided with a small hole through which one end of the string or lacing a is passed and secured by a knot, tassel, or other proper and ornamental device. D are metallic clip-loops, cut, cast, or otherwise made in any of the various forms shown in the figures in the drawing. These loops are secured to either side ofthe shoe-front, as shown, and opposite each other where it is desired to employ two strings, (in which case the center of, the string should rest in the hole through the plate 0,) or alternately or zigzag where only one stringis used. These loops are riveted to the shoefront, or otherwise securely fastened, and they may be made as ornamental in form as taste may dictate. E is a compressor, provided with a small loop, b, and is in like manner fastened near the top of the shoe in any convenient form. When only one string is employed, and one end being secured to the plate 0, as above described, the other end is passed through the loops successively and drawn tight, when that end may be secured by passing it through the loop bin the compressor,

. and drawing it under the spring-plate 0 thereof,

thereby avoiding the necessity of tying, as is usual. When a double string is used the operation is the same, and two compressors, one

on each side, may be employed, if desired, and

the center of the string being passed through the instep-plate, as above described.

I am aware that hooks have been employed instead of the loops. These, however, when the string is loosened, allow the string to escape, and my object is to hold the string in place under all circumstances. Neither do I claim the compressor; but
