Description

A. W. SOUTHWICK.
HOISTING DERRICK. APFQLICATION HLED JULY 28,1921.
Patented Oct. 10, 1922.
A TTORNE Y Patented Oct. 10, 1922.
UNITED STATES ALFRED W. SOUTI-IWICK, OF NEW PORT, RHODE ISLAND.
I'IOISTING DERRICK.
Application filed July 28,
2' 0 all w hem it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED W. SOUTH- wIoK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Newport and State of 5 Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hoisting Derricks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention is a hoisting derrick, and the object is to provide a strong and practicable elevating derrick for raising heavy loads such as stones, barrels of cement, or like burdens which would be difricult to handle otherwise.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the derrick partially elevated.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail of one set of posts and the attached operating crank and rack.
The invention includes a base ring 1 upon which are rigidly mounted three equi-spaced tubular metal posts 2, same being inclined inwardly toward a common central point. These posts 2 have elongated openings or windows 3 cut away from their inner sides. lVithin the stationary posts 2 are slidingly mounted three metal hoisting posts 4, with racks 5 formed on their inner sides and facing the openings 3. Across the openings 3 are journaled shafts 6 with pinions 7 thereon meshing with the racks 5, the said shafts 35 having also cranks 8 with pawls 9 for looking the posts 4 in elevated position. At the 1921.. Serial No. 483,144.
upper ends of the hoisting posts are mounted iron rings 10 into which are fastened chains 11 with hooks 12 at their ends. A circular frame 13 depends from the hooks l2, and this frame has a pulley 14% depending from its center with the operating cables 15. Steps 16 may be mounted on one of the posts 2 for the use of the operator. In use the derrick may be first extended to the height desired, after which the loads are elevated in usual form by means of the pulley and cable.
While I have herein described a certain specific method of constructing and asse1n bling the elements of my invention, it is understood same may be varied in minor de tails, not departing from the spirit of my invention as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
A hoisting derrick, comprising a base ring; outer, tubular, inwardly inclined metal posts on the ring, said posts having elongated openings through their inner faces; metal hoisting posts slidingly mounted within the outer posts; racks on the hoisting posts opposite the openings in the outer posts; shafts journaled across said openings; pinions on the shafts meshing with the racks on the hoisting posts; handles on the shafts; lock pawls engaging the pinions; chains at the tops of the hoisting posts; a frame depending from said chains; and a pulley and cable at the center of the frame.
ALFRED W. SOUTHWICK. lVitnesses CORNELIUS C. MOORE, CHARLES H. SEEKELL.
