Description

E. I.. BARTON'.
` back of each one.
Patented Oct. 10, A1922.
hdidt@ ERNEST LYNWOOD BARTON, 0F CHESTER, SOUTH CAROLINA.
FIREBACK.
Application led July 7, 1921, Serial No. 482,947. Renewed `Tune 23, 1922. Serial No. 570,385.
To all whom. t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ERNEST L. BARTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chester, in the county of Chester and State of South Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Firebaclrs, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to fire backs for fireplaces, and its object is to provide a novel and improved construction whereby the same may be utilized for heating water.
The object stated is attained by means of a combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming" a part ofthis specification.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is an elevation of the iire back;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 showing the fire back in place; and
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3*?) of Fig. 1.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes two fireplaces, the same being made in the dividing wall or partition 6 of two adjoining rooms. Each fireplace opens into a flue 7 The two fireplaces are divided by a metal partition which forms the back wall or re This partition is composed of two units, each comprising a front wall 8 having rearwardly extending top flanges 9 which meet edgewise, and also provided with a marginal reinforcing bead 10 at its vertical edges. The sections are assembled in spaced relation to form a hollow partition, and each wall section has an outward slant at the top to deflect the heat downwardly and forwardly. This slant also produces a substantially triangular chamber in the partition, at the top thereof. The walls 8 are held in assembled relation by bolts 11 passing through flanges 12 on the ends thereof, and on the inner faces of the walls are bosses 13, those of one wall abutting against those of the other wall, and thus serving to hold the walls in spaced relation. The bosses are perforated to facilitate expansion and contraction of the fire back.
The structure thus far described is substantially the same as the fireplace back shown in my Patent No. 1,364,607 dated J an. 4f, 1921, and according to the present invention the hollow construction of the back is utilized for heating water. This is done by mounting `in the top chamb-er of the back or partition formed by the walls 8, a water container 11i, which is shaped to correspond to the shape of said chamber so as to fit snugly therein. The container 14 is provided with a horizontal partition 15 extending from one end to thet other, and thus dividing the container into upper and lower compartments which are in communication with each other through an opening 16 at one end of the partition. Thecold water enters the lower compartment through a suitable connection 17, and the heated water escapes from the upper compartment through an outlet 18. A supply connection 19 from a suitable source, is made with the inlet 16, and to the outlet 18 is connected. a pipe 2O which leads the hot water to the place of use. It will be noted that the cold water inlet and hot water outlet are at one and the same end of the container, whereas the opening 16 in the partition 15 is at the opposite end. It will therefore be evident that there is set up a circulation in the container, the water iiowing through the lower compartment in the direction of the opening 16 and then rising through the latter and fiowing in the opposite direction through the upper compartment to the outlet 18.
The apparatus is very simple and efficient, and it can be easily installed. It will be understood that while the fire back is shown in connection with a double fireplace, it is also applicable to single fireplaces. By having the fire back and the water container separate the cost of replacement or repairs is materially reduced if either part should become defective at any time.
I claim:
1. The combination with a fireplace baclr wall having a topchamber; of water container mounted in said chamber, said container having inlet and outlet connections.
2. The combination with a fireplace back wall having a top chamber; of a water container mounted in said chamber, said container having inlet and outlet connections at one end, and a horizontal partition in the container dividing the same into upper and lower compartments, the inlet connection being made with the lower compartment, and the outlet connection with the upper compartment, said partition having an opening for establishing communication bewhich are separably connected and have an tween the compartments, und said opening outward flare at the top to form a top being` remote from the ends of the compartchamber; of a wat-er container removably l0 ments with which the inlet and outlet conmounted in seid chamber, said container 5 neet-ions are made. having inlet and outlet connections.
3. The combination with a, fireplace ntestimonywhereof I affix my signature. back comprising e pair of spaced Walls ERNEST LYNVOOD BARTON.
