EDWIN S. LEE, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
SAFETY HAIR STRAIGHTENER.
Application filed October s, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN S. Lee, a citizen, of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Hair Straighteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a safety hair straightening device and has for its object to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive device which is efficient in the straightening of curly hair without danger of burning the scalp. The ironing member is provided with teeth which divide the hair and act more efficiently in straightening the same than a plain smooth surface, and said ironing member may be heated in any desired way. Said ironing member also embodies a smooth ironing surface for appli cation to the hair after the same has been gone .over with the toothed portion of the ironing member.
My invention further comprises a safety guard for preventing the heated ironing member from coming into; actual contact with the scalp of the user.
' In odrer that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a side elevation of the device with the handle partly broken away.
P ig. 2 is a cross section on line II-II of Fig. 3 is a cross section on line III-III of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a detail safety guard.
In carrying out the invention, I employ a suitable handle 2 provided at its forward end with a socket member 4 firmly secured to said handle 2 by an arm 6, to the forward end of which the ironing member 8 issecured.
The ironing'member 8 is provided at its underside with a series of transverse teeth 10, the lower forward portions 12 of which extend forwardly to engage under the hair and lift the same into the intervening grooves 14. The ironing member 8 is also provided with a smooth ironing surface 16 for application to the hair after the same has been gone over with the toothed portion 10.
perspective View of the Serial No. 506,293.
The heated ironing member 8 is prevented from coming into direct contact with the scalp by a guard 18' consisting in the present instance of an arm 20 and a series of wire or other suitable loops 22 spaced apart and secured to said arm 20 as disclosed by IlgS. 1, 2 and 4. As disclosed by Fig. 2, the loops 22 extend completely around the ironing member 8, and as disclosed by Fig. 1, the end loops 22 are spaced beyond the ends of said ironing member 8 to prevent said ends from coming into contact with any part of the person or scorching any article of furniture upon which the device may be placed while the ironing member 8 is hot. The arm 20 is, preferably, of angular formation in cross section so that it will not turn in the corresponding opening 23 in the socket memher 4. The arm 20 is removably held in the socket member 4 may be removed dition while the heated.
From the foregoing description it will be understood that I have produced a simple and inexpensive device which is well adapted for the purpose intended, and while I have shown and described the preferred and retained in a cool conironing member 8 1s being form of the invention, I reserve the right to make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A device of the character described consisting of an ironing member having a smooth ironing surface for straightening hair, loops extending around said ironing member, and supporting means for the ironing member and said loops.
2. A device of the character described consisting of an ironing member having a series of transverse teeth on one side thereof and a smooth ironing surface on another side, an arm upon which said ironing member is mounted, a handle to said arm, and a safety device associated with the ironing member.
3. A device of the character described consisting of an ironing member, loops extending transversely around said ironing member, an arm to which said loops are secured, a socket member in which said arm is mountby a set screw 24, so that it ed, a handle to said socket member, and means associated With the socket member for supporting the ironing member.
4;. A device of the character described consisting of a toothed ironing member, an arm upon which said ironing member is mounted, a socket member in which said arm is secured, a handle to said socket member, a series of loops extending transversely around the ironing member, and an arm to which 10 said loops are secured and Which in turn is mounted in the socket member.
In testimony whereof: I afiix my signature, in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
EDWIN S. LEE. Witnesses:
