To all whom it may concern v Be it known that I, CLARENCE MAIER a-citizen of the United states andresident of New York city, in the county ofNew York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roulettaphones of which the following is a specification. i

My inventionrelates in general to a toy or game and specifically relates to an article of manufacture constituting an attachment for a flat disk phonograph designed to convert the phonograph into a toy or game of chance or into a combined phonograph and game. Certain games are played at present by advancing a token along a numbered or similar path, the'value of the move or the number of spaces to be moved by each player being controlled by the throwingof diceor by the spinning of an arrow about a number dial. I propose to combine the playing of such a game with the playing of a phonograph thereby to promote the interest in the same and at the same timautilize the movable turn-table as a feature of the game mechanism.

One feature of my invention contemplates the positioning of a disk on the turn-table and so positioning a pointer that it will in dicate, when the turn-table is stopped, the number of points or value made by players in succession. 1

-.It is further proposed to utilize in connection with this attachment a conventional form of playing disk with a record which will speak the game, recite in prose or poem certain features of the games, while it is be in played, or which will indicate auditoriall y the point at which the actuation of the turn-table should stop to permit the indicating features of the game to function. In general the invention contemplates the utilization of the conventional form of phonograph with an attachment'designed to convert the phonograph into a mechanical game while retaining its playing functions.

Usually the attachment will comprise a set of playing disks and a set of game disks so associated that one or more of the playing disks will coact with one of the game disks to form part of one game and certain other disks: are combined to form another game. For instance, the playing disk may be provided with a record which would speak a piece or make a prediction dependent upon the final disk.

Various other objects and advantages of the invention will be in part obvious from an lnspection of the accompanying drawings and in part will be more fully set forth in the following particular description of one form of mechanism embodying my invention, and the invention also consists in certain new and novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed. i

In the following description and in the claims, parts will be identified by specific names for convenience of expression but they are intended to be as generic in their application to similar parts as the art will permit.

in the drawings there is shown a conventional form of disk phonograph including casing provided with a top 10, a turntable 11, actuated from a centrally disposed driving shaft 12. There is also shown a conventional form of stop mechanism 13, all as is usual in such devices.

. The turn-table has positioned thereon a conventional form of player disk 14, which, in this particular use .of the phonograph, constitutes a record designed to produce auditorially some feature or direction relative to playing the game which includes the use of a second disk 15 hereinafter referred to specifically as a game disk. In this form of the invention the game disk is shown to be a fiat ring shaped member preferably of stamped metal which rests onthe turn-table and surrounds the player disk. The game disk is divided off by means of a plurality of spaced apart and radially disposed markings 16, such as ruled lines, designed to .form a series of spaces 17 therebetween. These spaces are each differently designated from the others and are herein shown to contain a number character 18 constituting one of a position of the indicator on the game series of characters herein shown to be progressive numerals 1 to inclusive. t is obvious that the showing is merely illustrative and that other designations, such as fortune-telling sentences, may be contained in the spaces.

By making the game disks in ring form, they may be replaced without the necessity of removing the centrally positioned player disk. An indicator 19, herein shown to be in the form of a pointer, is mounted in fixed position, rests on the top 10, and is arranged to overhang and point to whichever one of the spaces is beneath the same when the rotation of the disk has ceased. The indicator maybe in the form of a stand replaceable on the top or may constitute a fixture and be fastened in place by pins 20. The disk 18 provided with a series of upstanding ledges 21 which may be formed by slitting the disk within each space and bending the slotted portion at right angles to the plane of the disk and along the lines 16, so these ledges are so disposed relative to the indicator and have such a height that they may wipe past the overhanging depending finger end 22 of the indicator in which case the end is preferably made of paper or some other flez ible material. With this construction the pointer and ledges coact to form retarding devices for accelerating the slowing down of the speed of the turn-table after the power has been shut ofi'. By this construction it is found that the turn-table will stop with the indicator positively over one of the desig nated spaces formed between succeeding ledges and, of course, cannot stop with the indicator ina questionable position centered over one of the dividing lines 16.

The device will ordinarily be sold in sets as an attachment for a phonograph and will consist of a pointer or indicator, together with a set of playing disks and set of games disks, or, in some cases, the game disk together with a coacting player disk will be formed integrally and sold as one single unit. In this disclosure it will be assumed that the player disk lfi: may be integral with its encircling game disk. When it is desired to play one of the games, the appropriate player disk, together with its correlated game disk is positioned on the turn-table of the phonograph as is usual with the positioning of player disks at present. The sound box is placed 'with the needle in position to play the appropriate record, and when all is ready, the turntable is started as is usual.

In the form of the invention shown the turn-table is stopped by actuating the mechanism 13 either at the will of the player or as indicated by a command sounded from the playing disk. As the turn-table slows down to a stop, the ledges will wipe past the indicator and when the turn-table has ceased :to rotate, the indicator will be pointed to some one of the numbered or otherwise designated spaces. In this way the players, or some other designated persons, fortune will be told in the case where a fortune telling type of game disk is being used, or in case some progressive game such as steeple chase is being played, the numeral designated will be the number of moves on the chart to which the last player is entitled.

While I have shown and described, and have pointed out in the annexed claims, cer tain novel features of my invention, it will be understood that various omissions, substitutions and changes in the form and details of the device illustrated and in its operation may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a flat-top phonograph turn-table having a uniform speed of rotation, of a disk .demountably resting on said turn-table to turn therewith, said disk provided with spaces containing a series of ties ignations and a pointer fixed in place relative to the turn-table and coacting with said series to point to one of said designated spaces when .the turn-table has ceased to rotate. I

An attachment for a phonograph including a disk having marking thereon and adapted to be positioned on the turn-table of the phonograph to rotate therewith, said disk being provided with a series of spaced apart stops projecting from the upper face thereof, adapted to wipe past a pointer while the disk is rotating and a pointer for engaging said stops,

An attachment for a phonograph including a disk provided with a frictional underside adapted to be positioned on the turn-table of the phonograph to rotate therewith, said disk being provided with a series of spaced apart stops projecting from the upper face thereof, said disk provided with characters in the spaces between the stops,

6. An article of manufacture comprising two separable elements, one of said elements constituting a disk provided with a frictional surface adapted to be positioned on a turn-table, said disk provided with means for indicating spaces disposed circumferentially of the disk and the other elementconstituting means designed to indicate one of said designated spaces when the turntable has ceased to rotate.

7. An article of manufacture comprising a disk adapted to be positioned on a turntable, said disk provided with an opening in the center thereof adapted to contain a playing disk and also provided with means outlining spaces disposed circumferentially of the disk, and an indicator movable relative to the disk for indicating one of the spaces when the turn-table has ceased to rotate.

8. In a device of the class described, the combination with a phonograph including a turn-table, of a fiat disk adapted to be positioned on the turn-table, said disk provided with means for outlining spaces disposed circumferentially of the disk, an indicator for indicating one of the spaces when the turn-table has ceased to rotate, and means 'carried by the disk for engagingthe indicator.

9. In a device of the class described, the combination with the turn-table adapted to support a playing disk, of a second disk positioned on said turn-table to rotate therewith and encircling said player disk, and a pointer positioned adjacent said second disk and adapted to point to a portion of the same when it has ceased to rotate.

10. In a device of the class described, the combination with a phonograph turn-table adapted to support a playing disk thereon, of a second disk positioned on said turntable and adapted to surround said playing disk and to rotate therewith, said second disk being ring shaped and marked so as to be divided radially thereby to form a-series of spaces, and a pointer fixed in position relative to said turn-table and adapted to point to one of said spaces when the turn-table is stationary.

11. In a device of the class described, the combination with a phonograph turn-table and means for stopping the rotation thereof, of a player disk and a game disk, each mounted on said turn-table to rotate therewith, means coacting with the game disk to complete the mechanical parts of a game, said player disk adapted to indicate auditorially when said stopping means should be actuated thereby to control the game disk and its cooperative means.

12. An article of manufacture comprising a disk adapted to be mounted on the turntable of a'phonograph to turn therewith, one side of said disk being provided with visual markings constituting part of a game and the other side of said disk provided with a turn-table engaging surface constituting the sole means for connecting with the phonograph turn-table.

13. An article of manufacture comprising a ring shaped disk having a relatively large central opening adapted to contain a playerdisk therein when the disks are mounted in operative position on the turn-table of a phonograph, said ring shaped disk provided with means movable with the turn-table and adapted to coact with relatively stationary means to constitute a game.

14. An article of manufacture comprising a ring shaped disk having a relatively large central opening adapted to contain a player disk therein when the disks are mounted in operative position on the turn-table of a phonograph, and projections extending from the upper face of said disk movable with the turn-table and adapted to coact with relatively stationary means to constitute a game.

15. In a device of the class described, the combination with the turn-table of a phonograph and a playing disk operatively mounted thereon of a game disk in frictional en gagement with the turn-table and revolved thereby, a relatively stationary member and means operatively connecting said game disk and said member to constitute a toy.

16. In a game device adapted to be played on a phonograph of a fiat turn-table type, said device including a fiat disk adapted to be positioned on the phonograph turn-table and rotated by the frictional engagement therewith, and an indicator therefor adapted to be disposed in juxtaposition to the turntable, said disk provided with means for defining spaces disposed circumferentially of the disk and movable therewith relative to the indicator whereby when the phonograph turn-table is stopped the indicator will point to one of the spaces, said spaces containing visual designations whereby certain of the spaces will be identified differently from certain other spaces.

17. A phonograph record including a labeled part provided with means adapted to coact with a phonograph mechanism to produce sound, and provided with visual designations adapted to coact with a relatively stationary indicator to constitute a game.
