Be it known that l, EDWARD A. Ens'rion, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Galesburg, county of Knox1 and State of illinois, have invented'certain new and useful Improvements in lashing hlachines, of which thefollowing is a specification. My invention relates to washing machines and it has for its principal. object the provision of a new and improved form and arrangement of parts by which an improved operation may be had forwashingI clothes, serving to make the operation vof washing easier and quicker, and giving better results. Referring to the drawings, 10 indicates a tub of any approved type supportedupon a framework 11 and closed at its upper end by a lid 12 of any approved type. Revolublv mounted in the ends of the tub 10 is a shaft 18 which has one end portion extending beyond the end of the tub and carrying a pinion 1li by which the shaft is adapted to an alternating rotary motion as may be desired.
The revoluble elementv of my improved washer comprises two holders which are mounted in spaced relation with respect to each other upon opposite sides of the shaft 18, the two holders being removably mounted `in position and being braced with respect to each other for insuring the desired rigidity in operation. y
Each ofthe holders, "in the construction shown, comprises two heads 15 which 4are semi-circular in shape, being spaced at a distance apart and being joined together by sheet metal 16 provided with perforations throughout its entire area,y the heads 15 and the sheet metal y16 serving toy provide a reticulated structure of substantially semicylindrical shape. Asv is shown inFig. 2, a section 17 of the sheet metal of each ofthe holders is hingedly mounted upon the heads 15, the doors thus provided being adapted to be held closed by turn bottons 18. f My semi-cylindrical holders are secured in position upon the shaft 13 within the tub 10 by the use of brackets 19 ixedly mounted upon'the shaft 13`at the' oppositeends 'of the tub. Each of the heads 15 is provided with a bearing member f2() on its outer face adapted by engagement with the adjacent bracket 19 to position the holder ,with respectto the shaft. Slide blocks 21 vwhich are movably mounted upon ythe vheads 15 are adapted to be brought into engagement with the ends of lugs 22 formed onthe brackets 19 for securing the heads firmly in position upon the brackets, thumb screws *23 being provided for holding the slide blocks2l releasably in position. As will be readily understood, kwhen one of the holders is placed in centered position betweenl the brackets 19, the slide blocks 21 are adapted to be moved readily'landquickly into engaging position and tightenedA by`- means of the thumb screws 23 for securing the holders firmly in position. The holders are further detachably connected together by means of hinged members 24' carried by one of lthe holders and releasably connected to the other holder byA means of flatfheaded screwsf25 which ypass through slots 26 in said hinged members, as is clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 5. y t
lhen it is desired to-nse ythe machine, the cylindrical holder comprising the two sec# tionsl as above described Visvturned into position with one of the doors 17 uppermost so as to facilitate placing the desired quantity of clothes to be washed into the section. The shaft 13 is then 'given' a half rotation to bring` the other door 17' uppermost for filling the other section 15 of the holder. With the holders 15 filled with thefproper quantity of clothes, and withthe tub 1() filled with Ahot water to 'the desired point, the shaft 13 is given a lrotarymovement for carrying thexholders 15 alternately into and out of the water. As will be readily lunderstood, when one of the holders is in uppermost position, the water' is caused to escape from the holder and from the clothes. Im-
mediately following this, the clothes are again immersed in the water by the continued rotation of the shaft. By reason of this alternate immersion of the clothes in the water and the movement out of the water, a maximum of cleaning effect lis attained, rendering my machine very effective for cleaning purposes. The cleaning is also enhanced by the sliding movement of the clothes along the perforated walls of the holder, and by the squeezing effect when the clothes slide into the converging side portions of the holder sections. i ln. Fig. G, I have shown a wustl-urtirm in which the use of a shaft ruiming `through the holder is avoided. This result is effected by the provision of brackets QT and equipped with studs or stub shafts 29 and 30, respectively, which are revi'ilubly supported in bearings in the ends of the tub 10. The shaft 30 has the driving gear 14e mounted thereon for giving rotary movement to the holder sections 15 in the manner above described, the holders being` rigidly secured'in position between the brackets by the use of any suitable means, 1f desired, one or both of the holders may be made readily removable from the brackets.
I have found in practice that my machine is very effective, both when the shaft 13 is given continuous rotation in one direction, and when it is given a alurality of` rotations in one direction and then a plurality of rotations in the opposite direction. 1 have found that in the use of my machine, there is no tendency of the clothes to become twisted into a ball by continued rotation of the holders in one directionr By the provision of a device of this type, which is adapted for attaining highly efficient results without the use of reversing gear mechanism Such as is required for producing the alternating rotation employed with some types of washing machines, I am enabled to build my machine at a reduced cost, and with greater ease than would otherwise be possible.
By the use of my construction as above described, the opeation of removing` the clothes from the machine is greatly facilitated. With one of Vthe sections l5 in its uppermost position, the door -17 will be opened, giving direct access to the clothes from whichthe major portion of the hot water will have been drained by reason of the elevated position of the holder. Thereafter the other section 15 is brought to its elevated position for removal of the clothes therefrom. By reason of making one `or both of the sections l5 easily removable from its mounting means, easy access can be had to the tub for cleaning it without the necessity for lifting out in one piece the entire rotating element.
.lWhile Ik prefer to form my improved holder members of perforated sheet metal as shown, it will be understood that I do not restrict myself to that particular form of structure except as hereinafter specifically claimed since other forms of reticulated holders may obviously be used for the practice of my invention broadly, the es- Isential feature bein@ that the water is iermitted to pass intovand out of the holder easily and quickly.
ldlhile I have illustrated and described the preferred ferm of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and moditifization without departing from thespirit of the invention. l, therefre, do not wish to be .limited to the precise details of constructimi set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A washing machine comprising a tub adapted to contain water, a substantially cylindrical holder formed in separate clothes containing sections spaced apart and having perforated walls, a rotatable sha-ft extending through the tub between the sections, carriers rigid upon said shaft, and means for releasably attaching the sections to the carriers, whereby said sections may be released from the carriers and bodily removed from the tub, rotation of the shaft causing the holder sections to swing into and out of water in the tub.
2. A washing machine comprising a tub adapted to contain water, two substantially semi-cylindrical retieulated holder members, releasable mea-ns for rigidly holding the members in spaced relation, and means for mounting said holder members revolubly in position in said tub, said means including carrying elements releasably connected with the ends of the members, and a shaft extending through the tub between the members and having the carrying elements rigidly mounted thereon, rotation of the shaft serving to revolve the members and move them alternately into and out of the water in the tub.
3. A washing machine comprising a tub adapted to contain water, a shaft revolubly mounted in said tub, brackets iiredly mounted on said shaft within said, tub, substantially semi-cylindrical reticulated holder members removably mounted between said brackets in spaced relation with .respect to each other on opposite sides of said shaft, and releasa-ble connections between said holder members at opposite sides of said shaft.
4;. A washing machine comprising a tub adapted to contain water, a shaft revolubly mounted in said tub, brackets fixedly mounted on said shaft within said tub, an arcuate reticulated holder, bearing members on opposite ends of said holder adapted by engagement With said brackets to position the holder with respect to said shafts, and detachable means for securing said holder upon said brackets.
5. Aivashing machine comprising a tub adapted to contain Water, apluralityof reticulated holder members adapted to contain clothes to be Washed7 means carried by one of said members and releasably engaging the other member for holding said members rigidly in spaced relation adapted to permit ready detachment of one of the members, and means for moving said members in turn into and out of the water in said tub.
G. A Washing machine comprising a tub adapted to contain Water, a rotatable shaft extending through the tub, vbracket elements carried by said shaft Within the tub and having arms extending radially of the shaft, reticulated clothes holding compartments positioned in the tub and extending longitndinally therein with the shaft between the compartments, and means carried by the ends of the compartments for releasably engaging the arms of the brackets carried by the shaft.
7. A Washing machine comprising` a tub adapted to contain Water, bracket elements rotatably mounted in the tub and having arm extensions, lclothes containers positioned in said tub and formed of perforated ma terial, means carried by the clothes containers for releasably engaging the arms of the bracket elements, and fasteners carried by the clothes containers at opposite sides of each bracket for releasably connecting the clothes containers.
