' mrmnss-r'rtmne machine. I Application filed March t, 1922. Serial 1 70. 541,484
To all whom it my camera:
Be it known that I, PHILLIP BAKER, ject of Lithuania, residing at Malden, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massa chusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mattress-Filling Machines,
of whichtlre follew'ing is a specification.
This invention relates to a machine for filling mattresses with down, floss and the like, and while the machine is be utilizedfor filling other articles such as pillows, comforters and the like with floss, down or feathers.
' The object of the invention is to provide a machine of the character set "forth in which a thorough beating up and circulation of the filling material may be obtained prior to the time when the machine is being used to fill a mattress, and after this beating up and circulation of the 1 filling material has been completed, the machine'may be quickly and easily changed to fill a mattress with the filling material.
The object of the invention is further to provide a machine for the purposes hereinbefore set forth which shall be simple and effective in its construction and operation,-
and particularly the'objectof the invention 30 is to rovidea machineo'f the character here- I chine partly broken away and shown in sec- 'tion.'-- a 'Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. i
Fig. 3 is a'sectional elevation taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1f I f Fig; 4 is a sectional detail plan, somewhat diagrammatic in its nature, taken along the line 4+4, Fig. 1, only a portion of the radial arms of the shaft 26 being shown'for the sake" of more clearly illustrating the construction and arrangement of the rotary and stationaryarms.
" Like numerals refer to like arts through- I out the severalvi'e'ws ofth'e' rawings.
a sub- I particularly adaptedfor that'purpose, the same may also through the machine, whether the machine be operated to-fill the consists inthe'combination 21may be rotated to In the drawings, 5 is a receptacle for fillin material the same consisting of a cylindrical base portion 6, a conical Intermediate portion 7 increasing in diameter from the bottom to the top thereof and a conical portlon 8 decreasing in'diameter from the bottom thereof to the top of the receptacle. At
the bottom of the conical portion 7 is'a grat 9 and underneath this grate is a pit adapted to receive refuse material and this pit is 1 provided with a door 10 whereby said refuse materlal'may be removed from the pit. A
door ll'is provided in the conical portion? of the receptacle and this door is provided with a hopper 12 having a cover 13 hinged to the door 11. Filing material maybe introduced into the receptacle 5 through the hopper 12,' A screen 14Qisprovided1i1 the T top of the conical portion 8 of thereceptacle.
A-circulating fan 15 is connected by an intake pipe 16 to the lower part of the conical portion 7 and a return pipel'? connects said fan to the upper portion of the receptacle.
In the present embodiment of my invention the return pipe is connected tothe conical portion 8 and extends downwardlytherefrom and entirely through thereceptacle 5 projecting outwardly therefrom to'forin a projecting open, outer end 18. "A portion 19 of the return pipe 17 which extends receptacl 7, has'an opening 20 therein which leads into the receptacle 5., I
A damper 21 is fast to a shaft 22which extends transversely of the receptacle 7 and is provided at its outer end with an arm 23 constituting a handle whereby the damper open the portion 19of the return pipe or to cose the When the damper 21 is positioned as illustrated in the drawings, the opening 20 is closed and when the damper is turned upwardly so that the opening21opens into the receptacle 5, then the pipe 19 is closed by said damper.
An annular flange 24 is provided on the outer end of theprojecting portion 18 of the return pipe 17 and this 1portion of'the return pipe constitutes a nozz to'which the open end portion of the mattress is fastened while the filling operation is in process.
The material used for filling the mattresses, such as silk floss, is first thoroughly beaten up in the receptacle 5"and this is accomplished bymeans of an agitating device or beater 25 consisting of 'a shaft 26 with arms 27 projecting radially therefrom and arranged in a series of helices; These arms,
during the rotation of the shaft 26, pass between stationary arms 40 which are rigidly fastened to segmental plates 41 which are fastened to the inside of the receptacle 5 as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4. As the shaft is rotated it will beseen that the arms 27 and 40 co-act to thoroughly agitate and beat up the filling material. It will further be seen that the rotary member is located just above the grate 9 and in alignment with the entrance to the intake pipe 16 so that said rotary member will assist in feeding the filling material into the .inlet end of the intake pipe. The intake pipe 16 is provided with a hopper 28 having a cover 29 which may be opened for the purpose of inspecting the condition of the filling material while it is passing through the pipe 16.
The circulatin fan 15 is rotated by means of a pulley 30 fast to the shaft 31 of said circulating fan and connected by a belt, 32 to a pulley 33 fastto the shaft 34: of an electric motor 35. Said electric motor shaft 34 has another pulley 36 fast thereto and connected by a belt 37 to a pulley 38 fast to the shaft 26 of the beater. A damper 39 is provided in the pipe 16 adjacent the receptacle 5 whereby said pipe may be opened or closed,
- the floss with the The general operation of the mechanism hereinbefore specifically described is as follows :Assuming the filling material to have been inserted within the receptacle 5 through the hopper 12 and that the mattress to be filled is fastened in a manner well known to those skilled in the art to the outer end of the portion 18 of the return. pipe 17, the first operation to be performed is to beat up beater 25 and this is done by first closing the damper 39 and closing the opening 20 by means of the damper 21. After the floss has been thoroughly beaten up the damper 39 is opened and the damper 21 is turned across the portion 19 of the pipe 17, and the fan will then operate to cause the silk floss to circulate and also to be further beaten up,
the circulation of the floss taking place from the receptacle 5 through the pipe 16 through the blower 15 and through the return pipe'l7 and through a port-ion of the pipe 19 and-outwardly therefrom through the opening 20 into the receptacle again. This circulation of the material continues until, by inspection through the hopper 28, the silk floss is found to be in proper condition to be fed into the mattress, whereupon the damper '21 is turned to close the opening 20 and the blower draws the floss out of the receptacle 5 and forces it through the return pipe 17 and through the portion 19 of said return pipe out of the outlet end 18 of said pipe and into the mattress. As soon as the mattress is filled, the operation hereinbefore described is repeated.
It will be understood that the shafts of the circulating fan and the beater are rotatmasses edby the electric motor 35 through the belts 32 and 37 respectively.
I claim:
