A TTOH/VEVS insane ROBERT BRTJGGS, 0F SALIIDA, COLORADO.
eiv'ri'skrn errant.
-application filed January-13, 1922. Serial No. 528,918.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Roe-Eur BRIGGS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Salida, in the county of Charfee and State of Golorado, have invented certain new and useful lmpr vements in Antis rid Chains. of which the following is a specification.
This invention. relates to fastening devices for anti-skid chains is an improve" ment on the construction illustrated in my United StatesPatent #:1238531.
In a fastening, device constucted'in accordance with the aforesaid patent no positive means was provided for holding the end links of the side chains in engagement with the hooks and consequently the. end links frequently became disconnected from the hooks thereby permitting the anti-skid device to become disconnected from the tire.
Therefore, a further object 01" this invention is to provide a fastening device of the type illustrated in the aforesaid patent, the said fastener being provided with novel means whereby the end links chains are at all times held in with the hooks.
Further the invention ain'is to provide novel means whereby the locking lover of the device may be utilized as'a means holde 'agement ing the end link in eng gement i the hook so that the lOClZlIl lever or arm will in addition to holding the several parts in a set position act as a means to hold the end links within the bill of the hook.
A further object is to provide a device of the character specifies which is of highly simplified construction, durable in use and cheap to manufacture.
Qther objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent din-mg the course of the following description.
in the accompanying drawing l'orniing part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved fastener applied.
Figure 2 is perspective of the same. Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional View through the fastener, the view illustrating the locking arm arranged in overlapping relation to the bill ofthe hook so as to hold the end link within the bill of thehook at all times.
of the side In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodi ment of the invention, the numeral 5 generally designates a wheel having a felloe 6 about which a tire 7 is arranged. An antiskid chain 8 is arranged about the tire 7 and is provided with the usual side and cross chains 9 and 10 respectively.
The invention forming the subject matter of this application resides in] a chain fastening device having an elongated body plate 12'one end of which is apertured as indicated at 13 whereby the terminal link of one end of the side chain 9 may be connected to the body. As illustrated inliigures 2 and 3 a pivot element 14 is: extended throughthe other end portion of the body 12 and is provided with squared ends extended through a locking arm 15 and a link 16; As the locking link 16 and the locking arm 15 are nonrotatably connected to the pin 14, the move ment oi the locking'arm will result in the movement of the link 16. Therefore, when the locking arm is swung to a position parallel to the body 12 the link 16 which is arranged in spaced parallel relation to the locking arm will also be'swung to a position parallel to the body and on the opposite side from the locking arm. This construction is illustrated in-Figure 3'wherein the rear terminal portion of the locking arm 15 is illustrated as having connection with a locking stud 19.
The locking stud 19 is extended upwardly from the body 12 and has its end inclined so thatwhen the curved'lip 20'1is'engaged with the same the arm 15 will yield slightly and will ride upon the pin. The continued movement of the locking arm will cause the pin or stud 19 to be received within an opening 22 at one side of he curved lip 20 whereby the locking arm 15 is securely held in position on the body 12.
One longitudinal edge of the locking arm i5 is formed with lateral extension 23 constituting a linger piece whereby the locking arm may be moved on its pivot. The locking arm is of spring metal and when it is desired to remove the same from engagement with the pin 19, it is merely necessary to force theterminal portion of the locking arm upwardly and over the pin 19.
One end of the link 16 is provided with a hook 26 having its rear portion connected to the link 16 as indicated at 27 and having its forward portion provided witha bill bill 28 so that. the'free end of thesame will adapted to be engaged with any one of the links of the side chain. In the case of the aforesaid patent the hooks 28 became disconnected fromthe side chains and to over come this disadvantage I have formed the I flatly abut the forward end of the body 12 when the hook is closed. This positively and completely closes thebill so that the terminallink of the side chain cannot be accidentally disconnected. As illustrated in Figure 8 the forward'portion of the lock ing arrn' l5.extends beyond the forward end of the body 12 and overlaps the terminal portion ofthe bill so as to brace the same and prevent the bill from being bent. Also the forward portion of the link 15 is extended beyond the forward end of the body and overlaps the terminal portion of the bill so as to form an additional locking means for the bill. The extended end portions of the link 16 and thelocking arm 15 define what might be said to be a groove in which the terminal portion of the bill '28 is received so that the bill is positively heldin position.
When the parts are in' the position illusi trated in Figure 1 the terminal portion of the bill 28 flatly contacts with the forward end of the body so that the hook is positively held against pivotal movement when the :device is closed. I
W1threference to the foregoing descrip-' tion taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be seen that a hook con-. structed in accordance with this invention is positive in operation and that the end of the "chain cannot become accidentally disconnectedfrom the hook.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is 1. A fastener for ,a'skid chain comprising a'body, a link connected to one end of the body, a hook pivoted to said link and having a bill adapted for engagement with one of the links of aside chain, said bill being adapted to flatly abut one'end of thebody whereby to close the bill and hol the link ofthe whereby to close the bill and hold the link of the chain within the bill, and means whereby said hook and said link maybe adjusted.
3. A fastener for a skid chain comprising a body, a link connected to oneend of the body, a hook pivoted'to said link and having a bill. adapted for engagement with one of the links of a side chain, said. bill bein adapted to flatly abut one'end of the bodi whereby to close the bill and hold the link of the chain within the bill, said link being extended beyond the body and overlapping the bill of a hook.
4. A fastener for skid chains comprising a body, a hook associated with the body and having a bill adapted to abut the body whereby the link engaged by the bill is se curely held in position, and a locking arm adapted for operatlng sald hook and having an extended ternnnal portion overlapping the bill and contacting with the outer side of the same whereby to brace the bill.
5. device of the character specified coinprising anelongated body, a link connected to one end of said body, a hook connected to one end of said link and having a bill adapted to flatly abut the forward end of said body, a locking arm having connection with said link, said link and said locking arm being extended beyond the forward end of the body and overlapping said bill, whereby to brace the bill and close the same and means carried by the body for holding the locking arm in position. i
