PLOW.
' APPLICATION FILED my 1921.
Patehted Sept. 1
. (ff/Varrz's Patented Sept. 19, 1922.
i hairs ea ran v CHARLES Lo EARLYSVILL'E, imel eapplication fi led-May 14,
To all whom it; may concern:
Be it known that I, GHAnLnsF. -Monms, a citizen of the United 'States,-residingat'Earlysville, in r the county +011? Albemarle' and State of Virginia," have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow's, of which thefollowing is a specification, reference" being had to the accompanyingdrawings.
This invention relates tocertamQimprovements in plows and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character of a burster type, and it isan object of the invention to provide a novel and improved implement of this eneral character which can be employed e ectively in connection with virgin soil.
Another object of the 'invention'is to prothis, general characterfembodying a groundworklng element or member having attached thereto a furrow opener.
Theinvention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of "my improved, plow whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a plow constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, one of the handle members being broken away for clarity in disclosure, a second position of the groundworking element or member being indicated by dotted lines; 7
Figure 2 is a view in top plan of my improved plow as herein disclosed; and
Figure 3 is a view partly in section and partly in front elevation, illustrating the means for attaching the furrow opener to the ground-working element or member.
The central portion of fl 1921; Seria1- No. 469,521." 7
'As' disclosed in the accompanying draw ings, -l3 denotes a beam of "desired dimensions and which is provided,at -its'rear end portion withan upstanding standard or post;
1. :Di'sposed laterally through the upper portion of the standard or post 1 is a tie-rod 2. This rod2 is secured at its extremities to the l' andle members?) disposed on a desired; upward and rearward inclination, "the for ward end portions ofth e handle members 3 being secured, as at-i i, tothe opposite side facessof the beam B.
The rear portion of the' b eam B- has his posed therethrough I and in the same general direction as Ethe-post or standard 1, a slot 5."
The opposite sides orlongitudinal margins of the opening 5 are definedby the oui ssta ndor top face of the-beam B by the; bolts-7.
The bolts 7 extend entirely through the beam B and also provide means'whereby a y bearing .8 may be secured to the under surface of the beamB at eacjh side oftheopen pivot i10'for the grouncl-woi."-lting element or member G. The gi ound-worlting member G comprises air-elongatedandfiat body of desired length and which extends above and below thebeam B :t-lllOli-ltftillfi openingb.
e- "round-n disposed through one of the openings 12 and through the slot 9 of each of the webs 6, said bolt having associated" therewith a clamping nut 15. The co-acting bolt 14 and nut 15 provide means whereby the element or member G may be effectively maintained in its different. positions about the pivot pin 10.
tion formed into a cutting edge 16 so that,
The lower end portion of the! element or member G has: its forward marginal porting edge 16 is also adapted to sever roots or kindred obstructions which may be encountered during a plowing operation. However, should the element or member G come into contact with an unusual obstruction such as a large stone or stump, the operator can readily raise the. beam B to permit the elementor member G to pass over such obstruction. This is due to the fact that the portion. of the beam B, in advance of the member or element G, is of such weight to facilitate the desired raising of the rear portion of the beam and the parts carried thereby.
The lower end portion of the element or member G is provided with a. pair of rearwardly directed feet 17, the outer faces of which being curved in the same general direction. The free end portion of each of the feet 17 is bifurcated to provide a kerf 18 through which is directed a holding bolt 1.9 for a furrow opener or shovel 20. The shovel 20 is held to the outer faces of the feet 17 and is substantially V-shaped in form with the apex portion thereof terminating sub stantially flush with the lower or free end of the cutting edge 16. As the lower end portion of the member or element G wears, the kerfs 18 in the feet 17 permit the opener on shovel 20 to be adjusted in order to com pensate for such wear.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a tractor con structed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason ofthe convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of, the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. an implement oft-he class described comprising a beam. provided with an opening therethrough, an elongated member dis-- posed through the opening and. extending above and belowthe beam, means for supporting the member for swinging movement, upstanding webs carried by the beam at opposite sides of the member, said. webs being provided with slots, and a clamping medium carried by the member and disposed through the slots of the web for holding the member in different positions.
2. An implement of he class described comprising a beam, an elongated member carried thereby and extending therebelow, rearwardlydirected feet carried by the mernber adjacent its lower end, the extremities of the feet being provided with kerfs, a furrow openerabutting said feet, and retaining members for the furrow opener coacting with the furrow opener and the feet of the member, said retaining members "being disposed through the kerfs in the feet.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature. if
