ed new and useful Improvements in'Phonographs and the like, is a specification.
My present invention to means for obtaining a of which the following relates particularly constant-speed electrio-drive in phonographs and similar instruments, in spite of line fluctuations in the supply current for the motor.
The drawings illustrate one of the embodiments my invention Fig. .1"is.a fragmentary side-elevation of with electric-driving invention; Fig. 2 1s an unf Fig. 1; and Fig. 3
phonograph equipped means within my derneath plan view 0 is an enlarged detail is adapted to take.
from Fig. 1 showing some of the parts in vertical cross-section.
Describing now ings, 1 is the deck turn-table supporting the disc-recor the devices of the drawof a phonograph; 2 is the is the turn-table spindle rotating in an upper-bearing 5 and supported on a lower-bearing 6.
7 is an'electric motor the worm 8, which in wheel 9, the latter turntable spindle. preferably The worm-wheel 9 is tioning material and is held whose shaft carries turn drives the wormloosely surroundmg the made of fiber or equivalent funcbetween a pair of friction-disks 10 and 11, the former being pinned to the spindle and the latter being splined thereto and frictionally pressed against the fiber wormwheel 9 by-the coiled compression-spring 12 whose tension can be adjusted by adjusting the collar 13 up or down.
14 is a well-known type of centrifugal governor driven from the turn-table spindle by he usual connection wheel 15 on worm 16 on the spindle of the governor.
movable friction-disk is the usual endwise,
comprising a worthe turn-table spindle and a of the governor which bears against the adjustable stop 18 when the turn-table spindle is up to speed and otherwise operates to govern the maximum speed Thus the motor 7 drives of the turn-table. the worm-wheel 9 which in turn frictionally drives the turntable spindle t at a maximum speed which is determined by the adjustment of the stop 18 of the governor 14.
The arrangement is s uch that the motor feet the speed of the turn-table.
, wheel to slip less and continues to her, due to fluctuations in the Serial in. 199,043.
has an excess speed which is much more than which will drive a rotary-part at a constant speed from an electric-motor unaffected by the inevitable fluctuations in the motor speed due to the line-current.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. The combination of a driven rotary member, means operative at all times to govern the maximum speed of said member, a motor having a speed which is greater than that required to rotate said member at its maximum governed'speed, and a slip connection between the motor and the driven member, which connection is so adjusted as to provide a slippage at all times between the motor and the driven member and compensate for variations in the excess speed of the motor over the-speed of the driven memspeed of the motor.
2. In a phonograph, the combination of a turntable shaft, means operative at all times to govern the maximum speed of said shaft, a motor having a speed which is greater than that required to rotate the turntable shaft at its maximum governed speed, and a slip connection mounted on the turntable shaft and forming a drive between themotor and the turntable shaft, said connection being so adjusted as to provide a slippage at all times between the motor and the turntable shaft and to compensate for variations in the excessspeed of the motor relative'ly to the speed of the turntable shaft, due to fluctuations in the speed of the motor. j I 3. In a phonograph, the combination of a turntable shaft, a governor connected thereto and operative at all times to determine the maximum speed of such shaft, a motor having a speed in. excess of that required to rotate the turntable shaft at its maximum speed, a slip connection between said shaft and motor which is so adjusted as to provide slippage at all times between said shaft and motor, said connection comprising a gear loosely mounted on said turn-table shaft and connected to the motor, and friction disks fixed on said shaft to rotate therewith and coacting with the opposite sides of said gear.
l. In a phonograph, the combination of a turn-table shaft, means operative to govern at all times the maximum speed thereof, a motor having a speed in excess of that required to drive the turn-table shaft at its maximum speed, and a slip connection be- In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification this 27th day of October, 1917.
