ADVERTISING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrr-r ALBERT CYR Bnncnnon, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Sherbrooke, Provinceof Quebec,,Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription of'the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and'use the same.
The present invention relates to new' and useful improvements in advertising devices.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an advertising device in which a series of display cards are consecutively placed before the observer or observers.
Another object of the invention is the provision in an advertising device having suitable mechanism for actuating the same placed in such compact form that the casing containing such mechanism may be placed in front of a building without interfering with passers-by and to' overcome various city regulations concerning the distance such being provided with suitable ornamentation and the operating mechanism for displaying signs actuated by a clock, the dial of which is exposed through the said cabinet.
Still another object of the invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations, and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the ac companying drawings forming a part of the present application, and in which;

Referring now to the accompanyinw drawings by corresponding characters or reference throughout" the several views, my im- 1 proved advertising device consists ofv a cabinet 2, the same. comprising a base 3 anda top 4 connected by the opposite sidewalls 5, a front wall 6 and'rear-wall 7. l The clock-12 above referred to any well'known design, the same preferably being a weight actuated clock. This clock is mounted upon a support 15 which extends within the casing 2 at a convenient location. It will be observed from Figure 2 of the drawings that the thickness of the cabinet is designed for the purpose of permitting the latter to be placed in front of a building without taking up comparatively any room, and in order to comply with the building regulations of various cities. A pair of driving rollers 16 are placed across the front of the cabinet immediately in the rear of the front wall 6 in horizontal alignment. These rollers are mounted in a pair of rectangular frames 17 including spaced vertical members 18 and horizontal or end members 19. The members 18 and 19 are formed preferably of angle iron, as clearly illustrated in Figure l and various other fig ures of the drawings. 'Apair of lower supporting rollers 20 are journalled in horizontal alignment at the bottom of the cabinet 2 and over these rollers 16 and 20, endless belts or supporting straps 21 pass. These straps 21 are provided with openings 22 formed throughout their length for engaging thepins 23 which project from the driving rollers 16, causing the bands or straps to be moved upon the rotation of the said driving rollers. The straps 21 are arranged in pairs engaging the ends of each of the rollers 16, as illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawings, and each pair of straps is connected by a plurality of bars or straps 24 provided in turn with openings 25 for engaging the ends of the clips 26 which hold the advertising signs or display cards 27 thereon.
Obviously, as the bands or straps 21 are moved throughout the cabinet, the display signs will be carried with them.moving the said signs or cards before the openings 14 in the hinged closures 13 in such manner that they will be displayed to passersby.
The pairs of straps or bands 21 upon oppositesides of the cabinet are moved in opposite directions, as shown by the arrows in Figure 1. One method of causing the movement ofsaid display cards is to key to the inner ends of the shafts 28 which support the drive rollers 16, and which are journaled in the sides of the Ushaped frame 32, bevelled pinions 29 which, in turn, mesh with a bevelled pinion 3O keyed to one end ofthe shaft 31 journalled in the cross-bar 32 whichv connect the sides of the frame 32. A gear 33 is keyed to this shaft 31, and a belt 3 1'c0nnects the same to a driving gear 35 which is keyed to a shaft of the clock mechanism shown at 36, so that upon movement of the said clock mechanism, the advertising signs or cards-will be brought one at a time before the various openings 1 1. By changing the gear ratio of the clock mechanism' which operates the gear 35, the movement of the said signs 27 may be regulated so that they will pass either slower or more quickly in front of the openings 14, as is desired.
In order that a great number of signs may be used at one time, and in order not to take up too much room within said cabinet, guide rollers 37 may be positioned slightly above the rollers 20 and in parallel relation therewith, over which the inner laps of the bands 21 may be passed; From thence the bands may extend upwardly to the guide rollers 38 and 39 positioned at the upper end of the cabinet from whence they pass downwardly again over the rollers 20, as is clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. The inner laps of the bands are so spaced apart that the pendulums 40 may operate therebetween without interference.
In order to provide a suitable tensioning means for the various rollers so as to prevent breaking of the bands,.the journals of said rollers are slidably mounted at their outer ends in brackets 41 and are supported in springs d2 having their upper ends connected to a loop engaging the journal of said rollers, and attached at their lower ends to the tensio'ning levers 13, one end of which is pivoted to the rear angle bar 18, while the opposite end is bent downwardly forming a spring finger 414: for engagement with the adjacent flange of the forward angle bar 18. By raising and lowering the levers 4L3, the tension of the springs 12 may be increased or diminished as desired. The inner ends of the rollers are mounted in a similar manner, the springs 45 which support the same being connected at their upper ends to a loop engaging the journals of said rollers, and at their lower ends to the levers 16, pivoted at their forward ends to the rear bars 18, and have their forward ends extended between the front bars 18 at the central portion of the machine. The frictional engagement of these levers 46 between the bars 18 holds the spring 45 under various degrees of tension.
In order to provide a suitable tensioning the clock mechanism 36, a suitable weight 17 is attached to the flexible connecting member 48, one end of which is secured to the actuating mechanism 49 of the clock, while the opposite end thereof engages the rewlnding mechanism 50 which will be later explained. The weight 47 consists of a pair of end plates 51 and 52 connected by vertical bars 53 upon which a plurality of similar Weights 5a may be engaged. The weight may be increased or diminished by adding or removing a number of smaller weights 5-1 in order that a proper balance may be obtained when a greater or lesser number of display cards 27 are employed.
The rewinding mechanism comprises a motor of any well known type, shown at 55, which carries a worm 56 meshing with a gear 57 adapted to rewind the drum 58 upon which the opposite end of the flexible member 48 is wound.
When the clock mechanism is run down, the weight 47 is then in its lowermost position. Prior to reaching this position, a motor 55 is set in operation, causing the weight to be raised and the flexible connector 48 to be rewound. Upon the weight reaching its uppermost position, the motor is stopped and the clock allowed to continue operation in the usual manner.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and description of the various parts will be apparent, and it should be understood in this connection, that various minor changes in the specific details of construction can be resorted to in the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the character described, a cabinet, a series of rollers mounted in said cabinet and arranged in pairs, display means supported by the rollers, each of said rollers having extended trunnions therefor, gears keyed to said trunnions, a second gear meshing with the gears upon the trunnions, a clock mechanism, and an operative connection between the clock mechanism and gear which meshes with the gears upon the trunnions for rotating the rollers and actuating the display apparatus.
2. In an advertising apparatus such as dcscribed, a cabinet, frames disposed therein, rollers journalled in said frames, said rollers being slidably mounted at their outer ends in brackets and held therein by means of springs, the tension of which oan'be regulated, belts passing over the rollers, advertising signs supported by the belts, a clock mechanism, and operative connection between the clock mechanism and the said rollers for rotating said rollers and operating the apparatus.
3. In an apparatus of the character'described, a cabinet, a plurality of frames mounted in said cabinet, rollers journalled in said frames, belts passing over the rollers and extending throughout the length of the cabinet, advertising signs carried by the belts for display through said cabinet,
brackets having slots therein supporting the rollers for movement in said slots, movable bars carried by the frames, springs connecting the movable bars and rollers whereby said rollers will be tensioned, and means within the cabinet for rotating the rollers, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

In an apparatus of the character described, a cabinet, a plurality of frames including upright members and cross connecting members mounted in the cabinet, rollers journalled in said frames, brackets having slots therein supporting the rollers for movement in said slots, tensioningbars pivoted to certain of said uprights and frictionally engaging other of said uprights for adjustment. thereon, springs connecting the rollers with the tensioning bars, a clock mechanism within the cabinet, an operative connection between the clock mechanism and the rollers for rotating the same, and a plurality of display cards supported by the rollers, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
