Description

H. S. GARDNER. HOISTNG APPARATUS.
APPLICATION FILED DEC.22, 1920.
A TTOHNEYS an example of Patented Sept. 5, 1922.
FFEQE...
I-IOIS'IING APPARATUS.
'Original application filed March 23, 1918,
18, 1921. Divided and this application filed Dccember 22, 1920.
To all 207mm it mag concern: 7
Be it known that I, HOWARD S. GARDNER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of East Orange, county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to apparatus for hoisting and discharging material and which include a bucket having an exit openingv normally closed by means of a gate, door or the like and has for its object to provide an improved and simplified construction in which the material is efficiently confined or carried during hoisting and in which it is efliciently discharged when desired. The specific ob ject of my invention is to provide a novel locking means whereby the gate, door or the like is efficiently locked in its closed position and which is easily released to permit the door to assume an open position. My invention will be fully described hereinafter and the features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claims. The present application is a division of another application filed by me on March 23,1918, Serial N 0. 224,177.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate an example of my invention without defining its limits, Figure 1 is .a side elevation partly in section of a bucket including my invention and illustrating parts of the guideway and Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the bucket.
y improved construction is particularly adapted for handling concrete and otherv coalescent material in building operations and construction work, and I have accords ingly chosen an installation of this type as my invention for the pur poses of illustration and description.
.As shown in the drawings, the apparatus comprises a pair of parallel guidewayso which are arranged in the building or other structure in any suitable manner; these guideways may be of any Well known type adapted either to be built up in sections to keep pace with the construction work or to be installed in a structure after the latter has reached its intended height. The guideways 5 serve as guides for a bucket or receptacle 6 which is provided with rail-shoes 7 or their equivalents, arranged to co-operate with said guideways to maintain said bucket Serial No. 224,177, new Patent 'thelike 24 with No. 1,365,979, dated January .Serial .1\To.432,446.
iazaiea I in its intended verticalorlother path. The '7 bucket 6 may be raised and lowered orio'therwise manipulated in any suitable manner, as by means of a cable. or the like, having its one end connected, for instance, at 8 witha rame 91n which the bucket 6 is, mounted and passing over a suitablepulley'to the drum of an engine orv motor which provides the power whereby saidbucket is operated.
he bucket 6 itself may be of any suitable dimensions and form and generally is prowardly from the rear portion toward an exit opening 11 formed in the front Wall or' por tion of said bucket as shown in exit openingis normally closed a gate, door orthe' like 12, carried by and depending, 'forinstance, from journalledv in suitable bearings 14 the proper locatedat points upon the bucket 6. 1n the preferred form the gate or door 12 is preferably providedwith side wings '15 which, inthe closed position, extend exteriorly alongthe sidewalls of the bucket 6 and in the open position of the gate bridge the spaces between it and the bucketand prevent spreading of the:material during discharge. l
As shown in the illustrated example, the gate 12 is maintained in its closed position by means of a pair of bolts 16 having hooks 17 at their free ends and slidably mounted in bearings 18 secured to. the bottom 10. The bolts 16 arespaced from each other' in the direction of the width of the bucket 6,- and arepivotally connected atl9 with cranks 20 mounted upon a shaft 21, which in turn is journall'ed in bearings 22 also fastened to the bottom 10. shaft 21. at. an intermediatepoint and is operativelyconnected by means of a link or an arm 25 adjustably clamped upon a shaft 26, the latter passing through a hollow shaft 27 and extending at one end beyond the bucket 6 and being journalled in bearings 28 Ialso secured to the bottom 10. At its projecting end the shaft 26 carries an operating lever 29 which extends upwardly along and at a distance from a side wall of the bucket'and' is preferably provided at its free end with a grip or handle 30, said lever 29, in theillustrated example, being movable in the arc of a circle between the members of a segment 31 secured upon said bucket as shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 1. The by means of l A crank 23 is carried by the hinges '13 before stated being adjustably In order that the lever 29 may be locked in position in the predetermined adjustments, it may be provided with a spring latch 32 adapted to snap into notches 33 and 34 formed in one or both members of the segment 31. l/Vhen it is desired to release the lever 29 the latch 32 may be moved to an inoperative position, against the tension of its spring by means of a finger piece 35 pivotally connected at 36 with the lever 29 and at 37 with the latch 32.
. With this arrangement, the hooks 17 of the bolts 16 project over the lower edge of the gate 12 when the latter is in its closed position and thus lock said gate or door in this position; the bolts 16 are held against unintentional movement, owing to the fact that in the described position of the parts the lever29 inclines'forwardly and the latch 32'is located in the notch 33 of the segment 31. The hooks 17 and bolts 16 may at all times be adjusted to properly lock the gate 12 in its closed position, by rotatably adjusting the arm 25 on the shaft 26, the arm as clamped thereon. When it is desired to release the gate the latch 32 is first removed from the notch 33 through the medium of the finger piece 35 after which the lever 29 is swung to the rear until the latch snaps into the notch 3 1. This causes the shaft 26 to be rocked and thereby causes the arm 25 to ex ert a pushing force upon the link or the like 24a which in turn actuates the crank 23 and'rocks the shaft 21. As the latter shaft is thus actuated it will operate the cranks 20, which in turn slidably move the bolts 16 in their bearings, in a direction to move the hooks 17 away from the lower edge of the gate 12. The latter is thus released and under the force of the load or under the force of gravity or both swings to an open position. To again lock the gate 12 after it has been swung to its closed position by gravity or otherwise the latch 32 is released from the notch 3e and the lever 29 is swung to the front, until the latch 32 again snaps into the notch 33. This operation of the lever 29 brings about a reverse actuation of the parts and again brings the hooks 17 of the bolts 16 into operative engagement with the lower edge of the gate 12 which is thereby again firmly secured in its locked position.
My invention is extremely simple in construction and efficient in operation and requires no skilled attention, either in operation or in installation. The apparatus may be used for handling any kind of material either loose or in bags or other containers. In my improved apparatus the parts are all constructed and combined in such a :manner that the effects of all strains, stresses and shocks are neutralized, thus prolonging the life of the apparatus and rendering it proof against rough and unusual usage.
My improved construction, as illustrated, includes also an improved skip or chute whereby the space between the discharge end of the bucket and the receiving point or element for the material is bridged. The arrangement includes additional novel features, all of which, with details of the skip and its operation, are set forth fully in the parent application hereinbefore referred to. It has therefore not been considered necessary to describe these parts in detail in the present case.
Various changes in the specific forms shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
- I claim:
1. In a hoisting apparatus, a buc'kethaving an exit opening, a pivoted door for said opening, a hooked bolt slidably mounted on said bucket and arranged to project over an edge of said door for locking the latter in its closed position and means for actuating said bolt to and from an operative position.
2. In a hoisting apparatus, a bucket having an exit opening, a swinging door for said opening, a pair of hooked bolts slidably mounted on said bucket for locking said door in its'closed position and means for concurrently actuating said bolts to and from an operative position.
3. In ahoisting apparatus, a bucket having an exit opening, a pivotally suspended door for saidopening, a shaft journalled on the bottom of said bucket,'a pair of cranks carried by said shaft, a pair of iooked bolts slidably mounted on said bucket and connected with said cranks for locking said door in its closed position, an intermediate crank on said shaft, a second shaft journalled on the bottom of said bucket, an arm carried by said second shaft, a link connected with said arm and with said intermediate crank, and a lever carried by said second shaft whereby said bolts are moved to and from an operative position,
4. In a hoisting apparatus, a bucket having an exit opening and a downwardly toward said exit opening, a pivotally suspended door for closing said opening, a hooked bolt slidably mounted exteriorly upon the bottom of said bucket and arranged to project over the lower edge of said door for locking the latter in its closed position, lever for slidably actuating said bolt to and from an operative position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
