Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. BnNs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Herkimer, NewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baby Carriages, of which the following is a speciiication.

iiiy invention is an improvement in baby carriages or doll carriages and consists in the features and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the carriage with the parts adjusted to maintain it in stationary position to serve as a crib.

Figure 2 is an end elevation of the carriage in the position to which it is adjusted in Fig 1.

Figure 3 is a side view of the carriage with the parts in tolded position.

Figure t is an end view of the carriage adjusted closed but showing in dotted lines the extended position of the crib or main portion.

Figures 5 and 6 are details of certain plates used in the structure.

Figure 7 is a sectional view of the main body parts of the folding crib or container portion, and

Figure 8 is an end elevation of the handle members in their united position.

In these drawings 1 indicatesa main bar which may be of wood or other material extending longitudinally of the. carriage and centrally thereof. This bar has at its ends hangers 2 in which the wheels 3 are mounted. There are two wl1eels,one at each end of the bar or frame member 1 and these wheels are in alignment with each other so as to track one behind the other. The hangers 2 have socket portions 1 at their ends which support end standards or.

these handle bars thus being pivoted to the plates and working in the slots or guide-ways 13 between the oarallel edges of the inner and outer plates.

There is one otthese handle bars on each side of the carriage and each handle bar extends from one end of the carriage to the other and each is provided at its central port on with a bend 14 which provides a portion 15 upon which a hand grip 16 is mounted. Each hand grip is grooved longi- 'tudinally as at 17, Fig. 8, and receives the portion of the handle bar and the grip is maintained on the handle bar by cross pieces or strips 18 and 19 which extend across the grooves or slots 17 and maintain the central portion 15 of the handle bar in place. As shown in Fig. 8, the two grips are held together by extending the ends of one of the strips 19 to form catches 20 which will hold the parts together by their frictional engagement with the edges of the plates or strips 18, the grip adjacent these ends 20 being grooved or socketed to receive said ends. The hand grips'are provided with rubber bumpers 21 affixed thereto by screws as shown in Fig. 8.

To the main central bar 1 there is attached a central bottom strip or board 22 by the screws 23, Fig. 7 and to the edges of this bottom board there are hinged the boards 24 which are adapted to be folded up into position shown in Fig. 7 substantially parallel 'witheach other or tobe extended laterally into position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1- at it.

To the inner sides of the inner plates 8 there are pivoted at 25 arms or rods 26 which areadapted to assume the positions shown in Fig. 1 extending upwardly and outwardly from their pivots at an inclination, and these arms carry the top rods 27, one of these rods being located on each side of the carriage and extending longitudinally thereof from end to end; To these rods the body fabric or flexible body portions 28 are secured and these flexible portions or walls at their lower ends are attached to the outer edges of the foldable bottom boards 24 at the point y, in Figs. 2 and 4. Any suitable form of ruiile or other decorative or design of the flexible side walls 28 as shown at 29. Figure 1 represents the carriage adjusted to remain stationary to act as a crib. In this condition the handle bars are turned downwardly into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 so that they will incline outwardly or diverge from each other to rest on the floor or ground at more widely separated points at their lower ends than the distance between their pivoted ends. The grips act as sustaining bases for these handle bars, as shown in Fig. 2, and in order to obtain a wide supporting base the grips are of the form shown so that the bumpers 21 located near each one will rest on the floor or ground at some distance from the edge at 30 and thus a firm support will be afforded. The relation of the parts is such that when adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 2 the wheels 3 will either clear the floor or barely touch the floor so that there will be no tendency for the carriage to roll or become displaced by the movement of its wheels, the handle bars with their grips servin as the supporting means. lVith the parts adjusted in the position of Fig. 2 it will be noticed that the body of the device is extended, that is to say, the foldable bottom boards 2% are in their unfolded posi tion and this is true also of the rods or arms 26 and the flexible body part of the apparatus. A chain 31 is provided, as shown in Fig. 2, to limit the outward movement and determine the position of the arms 26 so that the foldable body will be maintained in proper extended position. In this posi tion the device acts as a crib.

I order to exercise restraint on the handle bars which are now acting as supporting means, I provide stops 32 struck up from the metal of the outer plate 7 and also friction points 83 spaced apart from the stops 32 a proper distance to receive the bars forming the handle bails between them, as shown in Fig. 2. There is enough spring or resilience in the handle bars to spring over the friction points 33 so that the handle bars will come against the stops and then the points 33 will serve to hold the handle bars in the adjusted position shown in Fig. 2.

The inner plate 8 is also formed with stops as shown at 32 toact on the handle bars and each of the plates 7 and 8 are formed with upper stops 34- to serve in connection with the handle bars, when these are in the folded position of Fig. 4, and points are provided on the outer plates '7 to assist in holding the handle bars when folded to their uppermost positions, as shown in Fig. 4;.

The inner plates 8 are also provided with tongues 36 struck out therefrom which will serve to restrain the arms 26 when these are folded from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 4.

In use of the device as a carriage the handle bars are folded to their uppermost positions shown in Fig. 4t and of course the body portion remains in the extended position, shown in Fig. 2, so that the carriage may be rolled along by grasping the handle grips 16 the sections of which are now combined, shown in Fig. 1, to form one complete grip and the mother or attendant rolls the carriage while positioned at her side after the manner that a basket is positioned or carried. The weight is taken by the wheels and in going over rough places or across gutters or curbing the carriage can be lifted more or less and held and carried like a basket until a suitable surface for rolling the carriage thereon is arrived at. Of course steering can be done by moving the carriage laterally to meet all conditions.

In folding the carriage for temporary storage it may be made to assume the posi tion shown in Fig. i in which case the handle bars may remain at their up ermost position and the body portion folded as shown i full line. In this position the foldable bottom boards 2% will extend vertically and substantially parallel and the braces or arms 26 would also extend vertically and into a position nearly parallel with each other and the device would then present a narrow width for placing in a passage-way or against the wall where it would be substantially out of the way.

In packing the device for transportation, for instance as in a trunk, it may be made to assume the position shown in Fig. 3 in which the body portion, is folded like in Fig. e but the handle bars instead of extending beyond or above the body portion will be folded along side of the wheels of the apparatus so as to take a minimum amount of room.

Having thus described my invention what I claim is:

1. A baby carriage comprising a body portion with a wheel at each end, and a handle composed of two members, one at each side, movably mounted and capable of forming side supports for the body, substantially as described.

2. A baby carriage having an elongated body portion in the form of a receptacle with sides and ends to hol d the baby, a wheel at front and rear of the elongated body and in line with the longitudinal renter thereof. and a handle having a grip portion arranged substantially centrally over the body, substantially: as described.

A baby carriage having a body portion, wheels at front and rear, and a handle comprising two members one at each side of the body and each being in the form of a bail attached at its ends to the bOl y at the ends thereof, substantially as described.

4-. A baby carriage having a body portion, wheels at the front and rear. and a handle composed of bails, pivotally mounted at their ends to the end portions of the body to swing down in opposite directions to rest on the ground or to swing up adjacent each other with their upper ends centrally over the bodytojointly be grasped as a handle, substantially as described.

5. In connection with the features of claim 7, grips on the bails to act as *rests when the bails are used as support-s, substantially as described.

6. A baby carriage comprising a body, wheels at the front and rear ends thereof, handle members comprising bails pivotally attached to the carriage and adapted to be moved into position to support the carriage or to a position above the carriage, the said body being foldable, substantially as described.

7. I11 combination in a baby carriage, a body portion comprising a central member extending longitudinally thereof, wheels at the ends of said member,-folding side portions which, when extended, form the bottom of the receptacle, foldingarms extending laterally from the central portion of the body and flexible material connected with the foldable side portions of the bottom and with the said arms, substantially as described.

8. In combination in a baby carriage, a foldable body portion, a single wheel at each end of thefoldable body portion and handle members pivotally mounted to assume a position with their gripping portionscentrally over the body portion or to assume positions as supports extending downwardly and inclining outwardly, substantially as described.

9. In combination in a baby carriage, an elongated body, wheels at the ends thereof, handle members pivotally mounted on'the body and adaptedto' act as supports therefor, said handle members having grip members and means for holding said grip mem-' bers together, substantially as described.

10. In combination in a baby carriage, an elongated body, wheels at the ends thereof, handle members pivotally mounted on the body and adapted to act as supports therefor, said handle members having grip members and means for holdin said grip members together, each of sai% grip members, having a buffer or stop attached thereto to rest on the ground, substantially as described.

11. In combination a main bar, hangers secured thereto at its ends, wheels journalled in the hangers, sockets at the ends of the main bar, upright posts held by said sockets, a body and handle members pivotally connected with the upright posts, substantially as described.

12. In combination a main bar, wheels at the ends thereof, upright posts at the ends of the main bar and handle members pivotally connected with the posts, said handle members being in the form of bails extending along each side of the body portion, substantially as described.

15. In combination a main bar, posts at the ends thereof, plates secured to theposts,

handlemembers pivoted to the plate, arms for supporting a portion of the body, also secured to plates, locking means for the handle members and locking means for the said arms, substantially as described.

16. A. baby carriage comprising a body, a single wheel at the front and a single wheel at "the back, said wheels being arranged tandem, and a handle, said body comprising two sides for receiving the baby between them and collapsible laterally substantially as described. i 17. A'baby carriage comprising an elongatedbody, wheels at the front and rear thereof, a handle extending longitudinally of the body and connected at the front and rear thereof, said body being collapsible laterally substantially as described. 18.'A baby-carriage comprising a body portion, awwheel at each end arranged to track one behind the other in the central vertical longitudinal plane of said body and a handle located at a point over and substantially midway of the length of the body.

19. A baby carriage comprising a body portion, a wheel at each end arranged to track one behind the other in the central vertical longitudinal plane of said body and a handle located at a point over and substantially midway of the length of the body,

said handle being connected with both ends of the body.

20. A baby carriage having a body with upstanding sides forming an open top receptacle to hold the baby, wheels on which the body is mounted and a handle arranged substantially centrally over the said body, substantially as described.

21. A baby carriage comprising a body with a wheel at its front end and a wheel at its rear end, in the vertical longitudinal central plane of the body and means pivotally connected with each end of the body and movable to a position extending outwardly and downwardly from said body to serve as side props therefor.

22. A baby carriage comprising a body, wheels for supporting the bod arranged in the central longitudinal vertical plane of the body, said body being collapsible in a direction parallel with the wheel axles, and a handle connected to the body and located over the center thereof.

In combination, in a baby carriage a body portion comprising a central member eritending longitudinally thereof, side members pivoted to said central membento fold towards the center of the body and when extended, forming with said central memher the bottom of the carriage, arms pivoted to the body and extending laterally, rods supported by said arms and extending from end to end of the body, flexible material suspended from said rods, said arms with the rods and flexible material being foldable towards the center line of the body, "a handle and wheels for supporting the body, substantially as described.

24. In combination, in a baby carriage, a body, wheels on which the body is mounted, a pair of handle members comprising bails pivotally connected to the body at its ends, said bails when in normal position reaching over the body from end to end and adapted to serve as props when swung downwardly, and means for holding said bails, located at a point above the pivots thereof, said bails having sufficient resilience to spring. into connection with the holding means.

In combination in a baby carriage, a body, wheels on which the body is mounted, members in the form of bails extending from end to end of the body and pivotedat their ends, said bails when in lowered position acting as side props for the carriage and may be set or released by pressure applied thereto, substantially as described.

26. In combination in a baby carriage, a

body, wheels upon which the body is mounted, posts at the front and rear ends of the body, handle members in the form of bails pivoted to the posts, and means on the posts for holding the bails in position.

27. In combination in a baby carriage, a body member, wheels upon which the body member is mounted, posts at the ends of the body member, handle members extending from end to end of the body and pivotally connected to the posts, arms pivoted to the posts, rods carried by the arms, side members held by the said rods, and means on the posts for holding the handle members and arms in position near the center line of the carriage, substantially as described.

'28. A baby carriage comprising a body for receiving the infant, a wheel at the front and a wheel at the rear, both being mounted in non-swivelling hangers and sub stantially in the vertical longitudinal central plane of the body, and a handle arranged over, and substantially midway of the length and width of the body, said wheels being substantially alike, so that either may answer as the front wheel of the carriage, according to the direction in which it is moved. i
