THOMAS W. BAILEY, OF SAVANNAH, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN EAVES-TROUGH HANGERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,758, dated September 16, 1873; application filed August 19, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, T. W. BAILEY, of Savannah, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement on Eaves-Troughs, of which the following is a complete description, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings making part of the same.
Figure 1 is an end view of the eavestrough. Fig. 2 is a front View. The rest of the views are detached sections.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several views.
The purpose of this invention is to attach troughs to the eaves of buildings by means of an adjustable hanger, whereby said troughs can be given the proper grade for conducting the water, and at the same time the troughs be firmly braced and secured, in a strong and permanent manner, to the building.
The hanger referred to consists of a bar or brace, A, Fig. 1, a detached view of which is shown in Figs. 3 and 5. One end of said bar is curved, in order to clasp the head A of the trough B, asshown in the drawing. The opposite end terminates in a pair of lips, to b, of unequal length, between which'the inner side or edge of the trough is held. Said edge is turned down so as to reach to about the end of the short lip b, as shown in Fig. 1. This inner side of the trough is retained in place between the lips by a jaw, C, Fig. 5. A detached view thereof is shown in Fig. 6. Said jaw is fitted between the sides of the bar A, as shown in Figs. 4. and 5. The outer end of the jaw is turned downward, and then upward so far as to reach under the short lip b to the lip a, as shown in Fig. 3, whereby the inner edge of the trough, when between the lips, is secured, as shown in Fig. 1. The inner edge of the jaw referred to is turned upward, forming a heel, D, having a corrugated side corresponding to the stud E, projecting upward from the bar A referred to.
The attachment of the trough to the building by means of the above-described device, is by a strip of metal, G, the upper end of which is nailed to the roof. To the lower end of the strip is secured the hanger, by inserting it between the heel D and the stud E. The end being corrugated fits the corrugations of the heel and stud, between which it is clamped by the collar G, forced down over them, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The trough thus attached to the eaves can be easily and readily graded for carrying the water, by adjusting the lower end of the strip Gin its connection with the bar, so that the trough can be either raised or lowered, as may be necessary.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The bar A, stud E, and lips a b, in combination with the jaw 0, heel D, and collar G, all constructed in the manner substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
THOMAS W. BAILEY.
