Be it known that I, EDWARD S. STIMrsoN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Hopedale, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Filling Clamping and Parting Mechanism for Looms, of which the following description, in connection with the ac companying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.-
This invention relates to automatic filling replenishing looms wherein the running filling is replenished prior to complete exhaustion and wherein the old or spent filling is parted between the cloth and the shuttle by parting means mounted upon a carrier, such as the usual swinging shuttle feeler, so as to be moved bodily, rearwardly and forwardly or toward and from the lay.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved, simple, and effective means for operating the filling clamping and parting device when, and only when, a fresh filling carrier is transferred from the magazine or supply to the lay.
The object of the invention is further to provide a construction which may be easily and readily adapted to existing looms.
The object of the invention is further to provide a construction which will yield upon the occurrence of an abnormal resistance. to the operation of the filling clamping and parting device.
The object of the invention is further to provide a construction in which the usual switch cam for opening the filling clamping and parting device is eliminated and novel means provided for securing the opening movement.
These and other objects and features of the invention will appear more fully from the accompanying description and drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the claims.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Fig. 2 is a detail in transverse section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. p The construction illustrated is that of the well known Northrop type of automatic filling replenishing loom, and as this construction is familiar to those skilled in the art no detailed illustration or description be yond the features particularly concerned with this invention is necessary.
The broad feature of insuring the operation of the filling clamping and parting means when, and only when, a fresh filling carrier is transferred from the magazine to the lay is also disclosed in the patent to Davis 1,084,878, granted Jan. 20, 1914:, and this patent also serves to illustrate the general type ofmechanism' in connection with which a preferred form of thepresenfiinvention is'herein illustrated.
The present invention is also subordinate to a similar invention made the subject of an application Serial No. 469,508 filed by me concurrently herewith and to which reference may be made for an elaboration of the principles involved. The principal difference resides in the means employed for securing the yieldable feature of the actuator or actuator lever in order to take care of any abnormal resistance to the operation of the mechanism which may take place in the operation of the loom. In the application above referred to this yieldable feature was preferably secured by making the actuator or actuator lever itself resilient or flexible, while in the present invention this element is made substantially rigid and the yieldable featureis secured by'mounting it upon a yieldable or spring sustained movable support. tiate filling replenishment; the breast beam 7 the shuttle feeler arm 8 which rocks and slides on the stud 9, being swung over the lay in front of the boxed shuttle upon the operation of the controlling rock shaft 6 and returned under the action of the spring 10 are parts the construction and operation of which will readily be understood by one familiar with the art, such as is disclosed in the patent to Davis above mentioned and the patents therein referred to.
The replenishing magazine 4t is provided with the usual guide stop 11 against which the filling carrier or bobbin 3 is brought into position for transfer. The filling carrier to be transferred is yieldinglysupported and guided on the side opposite to the stop 11 by the usual movable filling carrier support 12 in the form of a flat finger located adjacent the inner face of the magazine. This supporting finger 12 is connected to a stud 13 extending through the side of the magazine and carrying on the opposite side an arm 14:. A spring 15 is held between a lug '16 on the magazine and the head 17 of a slide rod 18 connected with the arm 14;, the rod being guided in the lug. The stop 11 thus forms one side of a throat which the filling carrier passes from the magazine to the lay, the filling carrier support or finger 12 forming the other side. When the transferrer 2 is operated to transfer a fresh filling carrier from the magazine to the lay, this filling carrier support yields and supports and guides the filling carrier as it passes to the lay.
The filling clamping and parting device may be of any suitable form and construction and is shown as generally similar to that illustrated in the patents above re ferred to. This device is also shown as sup ported and carried by the usual shuttle feeler 8. The movable blade 19 co-operates with fixed blades. one of which is shown at 20. and the movable blade 19 secures its opening and closing movement about the pivot 21. i
lVhen a replenislnnent of filling is called for the shaft 6 is rocked in the usual manner raising the arm 22 extending rearwardly therefrom and therethrough rocking the shuttle feeler 8 toward the lay; If the shuttle is properly boxed this feeler will. pass in front of the shuttle in the usual manner and the dog will be brought into the path of a hunter on the lay and thereupon the transferrer 2 will be operated to transfer the filling carrier 3 from the magazine to the lay therebeneatlr When the shuttle feeler thus swings rearwardly over the lay the filling extending from the filling carrier to be abandoned enters between the members of the filling clamping and parting device which are then in open position. In the case of the type of mechanism to which this invention relates the filling clamping and parting device is closed to clamp and part the filling when, and only when, a filling carrier is actually transferred by the transferrer from the mag- 7 azine to the lay. Consequently, if the shuttle be improperly boxed so that it is struck by the shuttle feeler or if the conditions are such that the shuttle feeler, no matter to what extent it may move, does not effeet a filling transfer or if for any reason the filling transfer does not actually take place then there (an be no severance of the filling by the filling clamping and parting device.
This result is secured in the present invention by operating the filling clamping and parting device through the movement of the filling carrier support 12 which only moves when actual transfer takes place.
The present invention provides a yieldable operative connection between this filling can rier support 12 and the filling clamping and parting device when in operative position so that in case of any abnormal resistance to a relative movement betwcn these parts there will be no danger of a smash or of damage to the loom.
A supporting bracket 2% is provided for this connection. In Fig. l the supporting bracket is shown as supported on the axial stud 25 of the magazine. The bracket is provided with an elongated slot 26 fitting over the stud 25 so that the bracket may be adjusted into any desired position and then locked in place by the nut 27. This form of bracket may thus be applied to existing looms simply by placing it over the stud 25 already on the loom and then locking it in place, but it is obvious that other forms of bracket secured by other suitable means to a fixed portion of the loom may be provided.
This supporting ln'acliet has pivotally mounted on a stud 28 projecting laterally therefrom an arm 29 which preferably extends rearwardly in a generally horizontal direction. This arm 29 is sustained near its free end by a helical spring 30 seated in a cyliniilrical socket 31 formed in the arm and upon a flange formed on the bracket so that the arm spring sustained upon the bracket. The upward movement of the arm 29 with respect to the bracket is limited by a stop lug 83 formed on the bracket. At its rearward end the arm has projecting transversely therefrom a stud 34; forming the fulcrum for the actuator.
The actuator is in the form of a lever cast, forged or otherwise formed from metal to present a fulcrumed hub 35 fitting over the stud 3A. a rea-rwardly extending slotted arm 36 fitting over a pin 37 extended transversely from the arm 14; connected with the filling carrier support 12 anda second arm having the forward laterally disposed portion. 38,
the downwardly extended portion 39 and the forwardly extended portion 40 so that this lever corresponds in general shape with the actuator lever described in my aforesaid application filed concurrently herewith.
The movable member 19 of the filling clamping and parting device is provided with a laterally extended pin &1 at its upper end and the parts are so arranged that when the shuttle feeler has carried the filling clamping and parting device into operative position over the filling of the filling carrier to be abandoned, this pin 41 will have ridden over the portion 40 of the actuator lever and come into the angle formed between the portions 39 and l0 of the lever as shown in Fig. 2.
l f now transfer takes place and the filling carrier support 12 is rocked by the actual transfer of the filling carrier from the magazine to the lay in the replenishing operation, then the actuator lever will be rocked about the stud 34, thus raising the stud 4;]. on the movable member of the filling clamping and parting device and effecting the clamping and parting of the filling. If, for any reason whatever, there is an abnormal resistance to relative movement between the filling carrier support 12 and the movable member of the filling clamping and parting device, then the spring sustained arm 29 will yield compressing the spring 30, and thus no injury or damage will occur to any of the parts.
The opening movement of the filling clamping and parting device is effected by the pin ll coming into engagement with the downwardly extended portion 39 of the actuator lever as the shuttle feeler swings rearwardly, the spring 30 holding the actuator lever sufiiciently firm to permit this function to be secured. Thus the usual switch cam employed is eliminated.
There is thus provided-a very simple and practical mechanism readily applied to existing looms, readily adjusted to existing conditions and of strong and efficient construction. There can be no operation of the filling clamping and parting device unless actual transfer of a fresh filling carrier takes place and when this transfer does take place the. operation is effected accurately and surely but without any danger of injury or breakage of the working parts of the loom, due to the occurrence of some abnormal condition.
The adjustment of the supporting bracket and the yieldable feature of the actuator is also of great advantage in assembling and operating the cutter. By this construction the parts are readily positioned so that when the movable cutter blade is actuated to close the filling clamping and parting device no injurious strain is placed upon the parts after the closing position has been reached.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. An automatic filling replenishing loom comprising a lay, a replenishing magazine for the fresh filling carriers, means for transferring a fresh filling carrier from the magazine to the lay, a filling clamping and parting device movable into position to receive the running filling when the lay is in position for transfer, an actuator actuated by or through the transfer of the fresh filling carrier from the magazine to the lay to actuate the filling clamping and parting device to clamp and part the filling extending from the filling carrier to be abandoned, and a yieldable support for the actuator whereby the actuator may yield upon the occurrence of an abnormal resistance.
2. An automatic filling replenishing loom comprising the construction defined in claim 1 in which the yieldable support is in the form of a pivoted spring sustained arm mounted on a fixed part of the loom.
3. An automatic filling replenishing loom comprising a lay, a replenishing magazine for the fresh filling carriers, means for transferring a fresh filling carrier from the magazine to the lay, a filling clamping and parting device movable into position to receive the running filling when the lay is in position for transfer, a movable filling carrier support moved by the filling carrier upon its discharge from the magazine to the lay, a
bracket and means for mounting it rigidly on the loom frame, a yieldable support mounted on the bracket. and an actuator lever fulcrumed on the said yieldable support and engaging at one end the filling carrier support and engaging at the other end the filling clamping and parting device whereby the said actuator is yieldahle upon the occurrence of an abnormal resistance to relative movement of the said filling carrier support and of the said. filling clamping and parting device, but acts under normal conditions to actuate the said device, upon the movement of the filling carrier support, to effect the clamping and parting of the filling extending from the filling carrier to be abancloned.
4. An automatic filling replenishing loom comprising the construction defined in claim 3 in which thesaid yieldable support is in the form of an arm pivoted on the bracket and a spring interposed between the end of the said arm and the said bracket.
