INV'ENTUR W, W.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLAUDIUS DORNIER, OF FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO ZEPPELIN- WERKE LINDA'U, GESELLSCHAFT MIT BESCHRANKTER HAFTUNG, OE LINDAU- REUTIN, GERMANY, A GERMAN CORPORATION.
FLYING-MACHINE COVER.
Application filed March 31, 1921.
T0 aZZ w ham it may concern:
Be it known that I, GLAUDIUS DORNIER, a citizen of Germany, residing at F riedrichshafen, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flying-Machine Covers (for which I have filed an application in Germany on December 1, 1919), of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to flying machines and more especially to a protection for the supporting surfaces of such machines, having for its object to protect in particular the covering thereof against the influence of the weather. To this end, there are arranged to either side of the hull readily detachable protective coverings, capable of being rolled up, and which suitably shaped and dimensioned will reliably protect the supporting surfaces toa greater or less extent against the action of the weather. Preferably the said covering which may consist of waterproof canvas or the like is provided at various points with fastenings.
In the drawings afiixed to this specification and forming part thereof a flying machine embodying my invention is illustrated by way of example. In the drawing Fig. 1 is a front View and Fig. 2 a plan view.
Referring to the drawing to the right and left of the hull 1 there is arranged above each of the two supporting surfaces 2 a rolled-up covering 3, which when unrolled and spread out assumes the position 3 The two coverings are joined at their ends, and

this at the underside in the centre of the machine, by means of eyes 4 and cards 5. A strip 6 of the supporting surface may be trod on in order to facilitate the rolling up and unrolling, respectively, of the covering. At 7 there are arranged small studs on which the covering may be hooked by means of eyes.
In certain cases it may prove fully sufiicient to only cover the upper surface and to attach the two coverings, which extend somewhat beyond the ends of the wings, by means of cords or eyes relatively to the supporting surface or some other portion of the machine.
I claim:
1. In a flying machine in combination, a pair of supporting surfaces and a pair of covers, adapted to be rolled up, attached with one end to the supporting surface bases.
2. In a flying machine in combination. a pair of supporting surfaces, adapted to be trod on and a pair of covers, adapted to be rolled up, attached. with one end to the supporting surface bases.
3.. In a flying machine in combination, a pair of supporting surfaces, a pair of covers, adapted to be rolled up, attached with one end to the supporting surface bases and means for fastening said coverings to said surfaces.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
CLAUDIUS DORNIER.
