CUIEJIBINATION TOILET ARTICLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 22, 1922.
Application filed October 20, 1921. Serial no. 569,140.
To a?! w 710m. it may concern Be it known that I, ADA WEINER, a citizen of the United States. residing at Everett, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Toilet Articles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention. such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved combination toilet article which is especially designed for powdering a persons face and it has for its principal object to provide a novelty of this class which is compact and can be carried in the hand, the same being neat and attractive and resembling a small coin case or purse such as carried by ladies, more especially when on the street.
Another object of the invention is to provide an article of this class which embodies a powder pufi and a piece of chamois-skin which are connected together to form a unitary article, the powder pufi serving to apply powder to the skin and the chamois being used to uniformly distribute the powder or remove surplus powder.
Another object of the invention is to so associate the puff and chamois skin as to enable the chamois to serve the additional function of a protector for the powder applying side of the puff.
A further object of the invention is to provide a toilet article of this class wherein the pufi is stitched onto the efiective side of the chamois skin adjacent one end of the latter in such a way as to form a pocket in which a small quantity of powder can be placed, this puff and skin being covered by attractive material and the chamois skin being folded upon itself to provide a compact article which can be conveniently carried in the hand.
A still further object of the invention is to provide the article with a strap which serves, when using the device, to hold the same in position on the hand to permit convenient and effective use, this strap'serving as a hand strap when the device is not in use and is being carried.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:
Flgure 1 is an inverted perspective view of the combined article showing the same unfolded and ready for use.
Figure 2 is also a perspective view showmg the upper side of the article more clearly.
Figure 3 is likewise a perspective view showing the puff turned inside out to expose the entire effective powder-applying face thereof.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the article showing it folded and as it appears when not in use.
F1gure 5 is a central longitudinal sectional view taken substantially on the plane of the line 55 of Fig. 2.
In carrying out the invention, I make use of a suitably shaped piece of chamois-skin 1 and a powder puff 2. As previously indicated, the puff normally has its powder-applying face arranged in contact with the chamois skin and the puff is stitched around approximately onehalf of its circumference to the chamois-skin so that it provides a pocket in which a small quantity of face powder can be placed. In practice, a piece of faclng material 3, such as silk or satin will be stitched to the outer side of the chamo s so as to entirely cover this chamois and impart a neat appearance to the article. Another piece of facing material 4 will, of course, be stitched onto the back of the puff. The manner in which the facing material is stitched to the aforesaid parts is immaterial and therefore need not be specifically described. Extending transversely across the upper side of the chamois and stitched either to the latter or to the facing material 3 is another piece of material 6 of the same kind as the facing material which serves to form a pocket 7. It is to be stated here that although it is not necessary, the facing material 3 at one end extends beyond the adjacent end of the chamois skin so as to economize on the latter. This can better be seen in Fig. 5. As before indicated, the chamois is designed to be folded between its ends so as to provide a compact article for carrying in the hand. The chamois-skin is stitched to the facing material as indicated by the lines 8 and it is approximately on these lines that the article is folded so as to permit the pufi' to be inserted into the pocket 7 as shown in Fig. t.
As previously indicated, it is desirable to associate with the article, means for enabling it to be conveniently attached to the hand while using, ,and this means preferably comprises a strap 9 which is extended transversely across the intermediate portion of the faced side of the article and is stitched at its ends as shown.
In use, a small quantity of powder is placed into the pocket formed at the point Where the puff is attached to the chamoisskin and the greater portion of this powder adheres to the rough surface of the puff. When it is desired to make use of the .latter, it is simply turned inside out as indicated in Fig. 3 and the article is strapped onto the handby the strap 9 and the fingers extended between the faced side of the puff and said corresponding side ofthe chamois so as to permit the powder to be applied on the persons face. After using the puff, the chamois-skin is brought into use and serves to permit. the powder to be evenly distributed over thepersons face. All surplus powder can be removed by using the chamois-skin. After this, the parts are returned to the position indicated in Fig. 2 and then the chamois is folded upon itself and the powder puff inserted into the pocket 7 so that the article appears as illustrated in Fig. l. When the parts are in this position, the strap 9 serves as a hand strap by means of which the article is conveniently carried.
Although I have shown and described the article as being arranged as shown in Fig. 3
y when using, I wish it to be understood that it is not absolutely necessary to use the same in this way. As a matter of fact, I found that it is often desirable to simply fold about one-half of the puff away from the chamois.
somewhat as indicated in Fig. 1 and use this portion of the puff for powdering purposes. By so using the article, the powder in the pocket formed between the puff and chamois will not be easily spilled. I am led to state here that if the article is to be used as indicated in Fig. 8, only when a very small amount of the powder will be placed in the pocket as practically all of this powder will e absorbed by the puff. Consequently,
' when the latter is reversed as shown in the last named figure, there will be no powder to be lost.
Fromthe foregoing description, it will be seen that I have devised a novel toilet article for use by ladies which will enable the powder to be placed on the face and smoothed and properly distributed. The powder is held in the pocket formed between the puff and chamois and when the article is being-carried and is in a folded state, the powder is prevented from getting onto the persons clothing. This pocket may, if d8- for use, andsired, be utilized for carrying a small mirror. The materials from which the article is formed are such as to permit the entire device to be washed and at all times ke t sanitary. The article will be found i eal for street use and, the effective side of the puff will be at all times kept clean by the chamois skin. These, and other advantages and features of the invention have, no doubt, been made apparent by the foregoing description. Also, the manner of using the article and construction thereof have also been clearly set forth. in view of this, a more lengthy and detailed description is thought unnecessary.
Since probably the best results may be obtained with the construction and arrangement herein shown and described, this is taken as the preferred embodiment of the invention. However, I wish it to be understood that minor changes coming within the scope of the invention as claimed may be resorted to if desired.
I claim 1. An article of the class described comprising 'a piece of chamois-skin designed to be folded upon itself to provide a compact article to be conveniently carried in a persons hand, means covering one face to the chamois-skin, a powder puff attached to the opposite face of said skin adjacent the one end thereof, a covering for the outer face of said puff, the outer face of the latter bearing directly againsta portion of the inner face. of the chamois-skin, whereby to permit the latter to serve as a protector for the powder applying face of the puff, said pufl being intended to be reversed to permit it to be used.
2. The structure set forth in claim 1, together with a pocket formed at opposite end of said chamois, said puff and portion of the chamois'to which it is attached being intended to be received in said pocket to connect the ends of the chamois together and to provide the aforesaid compact and attractive article for carrying in the hand.
3. An article of the class described comprising-a piece of chamois-skin, a wder puff partially stitched around its peripheral edge to said chamois thus forming a pocket between said puff and chamois-skin in which a quantity of powder may be placed and leaving the inner end portion of the pufi free to permit the mid to be turned inside out acin material covering the outer sides of said 0 amois-skin and pufi.
d. An article of the class described comprising a body foldable between its ends and having a pocket formed at one end on its inner face, and a reversible powder pufi at tached to the inner face of said body adjacent the opposite end thereof and receivable in said pocket when the body is folded.
5. An article of the class described com prising a piece of chamois-skin, a cloth covering the outer face of said skin'and stitched thereto, a pocket formed at one end of said chamois, a powder-puff stitched around a proximately one half of its periphery to t e opposite end of said uff, to form a second pocket in which pow er may be placed, the powder applying face of said pufi' contacting the inner face of the chamois-skin to permit the latter to serve as a protector for the pufi', a covering for the outer face of said puff, and a transversely disposed handstrap connected With the article intermediate the ends thereof, whereby when the powder-puff and end of the chamois to which it is connected is positioned in the first named pocket, a compact and attractive article will be provided for carrying in a persons hand,
6. 'An articleof the class described comprising a piece of chamois-skin, a covering for one side of said skin, a pocket located at one end of the skin, a powder-pufl connected to the opposite end of the skin and having its outer face disposed against the covered side of said Chamois-skin, to provide a pocket on the opposite side of the article into which the fingers of a persons hand may be extended, and a hand-strap arranged on the ,last named side of the chamois intermediate the ends thereof to hold the article in position on the hand while applying or distributing the pewder on a persons face.
