Description
IVI. BURGSTALLER.
GAS BURNER.
APPLICATION FILED DEc.29. I92I.
Patented Aug. 22, 1922i.
MATHIIZAS BURGSTALLER, O11 CLEVELAND, OHIO.
i GAS BURNER.
Applicationrnled December 29, 1921. Serial No. 525,677.
To all iU/tom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, h/lnrrrnis lnnesrnn hun, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county oit' Cuyahoga and State ot Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas Burners, of which the following is a specilication.
rlhis invention relates to gas burners, and has for its object .to provide an improved burner suitable for use in gas furnaces and other heaters; or it may be attached to gas pipes in household rooms. The structure is believed to provide a burner of increased eiliciency as compared to other burners for the purposes referred to.
lin the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a vertical section olf the burner. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 -3 of Fig. 1.
ln the ligures of the drawings, 1 indicates a vertical gas pipe having an air opening 3 through which air is admitted into the pipe to mix with the gas therein. The upper end of the pipe is provided with a cap 4l having a row of line jet holes 5 around the same.
is initially ignited at these holes.
Surrounding the head of th pipe, and spaced therefrom, is a drinn 7 supported by a bracket 6 on the pipe 1, this drum being closed at the top by a plate 8. The side wall of the drinn has a series of jet holes 10 around the same, and on the outside et the drinn, above these holes, are upper and lower circular lins or 'flanges 9 and 9, the upper [lange 9 being somewhat wider than the lower lange.
Surrounding the burner thus constructed a larger circular shell 12, supported by brackets 11, and this shell has a top plate 13 provided with openings 14s therein controlled by a rotary damper 15 mounted on theplate 13 and having openings which may be registered or not with the openings in the top plate. The damper plate may be turned by a handle 16.
In the operation of the device, the gas is lirst lighted at the holes 5, and this iills the drinn 7 with mixed air and flame, the shell being open at the bottom, and after the drum becomes sufiiciently heated the gases formed will also ignite and burn at the jet holes 10, producing another llame between the drinn 7 and the shell 12, and this llame is deflected by the battles 9 and 9a against the shell 12, and in consequence the air both inside and outside the shell 12 is heated to a high degree. The initial combustion at the jets 5, being confined within the drinn 7, forms a gas or product in combination with the air admitted at the bottom of the drum 7, which will burn at the openings 10. ln other words y it is assumed that the combustion in the drinn 7 is incomplete and is completed by union or the products with the additional air entering the lower end of the shell 12 when the products of the initial combustion escape through the openings 10. Repeated operation of the device has demonstrated the 'einen ence or flame both within the drum '7l and'in the space between the drinn and the shell 12, and this has been found to give a superior heating capacity in proportion to the amount or gas used. l
l claim:
1. A gas burner comprising a pipe head having jet openings, a drum surrounding said head, said drum being open the bottom and closed at the top, the side wall of the drinn having ball'les on the outside thereof and jet openings below said ba'l'lies, and a shell surrounding the drinn and spaced therefrom.
2. A burner comprising a pipe head having et openings, a drum surrounding the head and spaced therefrom, the side wall oil the drinn having et openings and spaced batlles above said openings, and a shell surrounding the head, said shell being open at i the bottom and havingopenings at the top, and a damper controlling the top openings. ln testimony whereof, l anis my signature in presence ot two witnesses.
MATl-llri BURGSTALLER.
