MEASURING DEVICE.
Specification'of Letters Patent. Pate t d A 22 1922 Application filed December 17, 1919. Serial No. 345,623.
7 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR HADDOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Measuring Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description. 4
This invention relates to measuring deevacuated bulb from rough handling and at the same time provide a heat insulating covering for the bulb.
In general, my invention comprises an evacuated vessel containing the thermocouple which, at one end is provided with a socket base or plug and at the other end is surrounded by heat insulating material over which a suitable metallic casing is placed and jointed to the socket plug in any suitable manner to form a compact unit.
As shown in the figure, the invention comprises an evacuated bulb 1 having a press 2 through which suitable lead-in wires 3, 4, 5 and 6 extend. The lead-in wires 3 and 5 are connected at their upper end to a conductor 7 and lead-in wires 4 and 6 are connected at their upper end to conductors 8 and 9 which latter conductors are welded at a common point to the middle of conductor 7. Conductors 8 and 9 are so constructed as to function as a thermo-couple in a wellknown manner. The lower end of the bulb 1 is inserted in a standard lamp or vacuum tube socket 10 and is connected thereto by a suitable composition 11 in any suitable manner well-known in the art. The lower end of this socket is provided with. a plate 12 having terminal lugs 13 thereon to which the ends of the lead-in wires are connected. This plate is also provided with terminals 14 which are adapted to make contact with circuit connections when the unit is placed casing 16 surrounds the upper end of the bulb 1 which projects from the composition 11. This casing is highly polished so that lncident heat waves arereflected. Between the casing 16 and the bulb 1 there is placed a suitable amount of heat insulating mate- {112:1 17 suchlas mineral wool, asbestos or the .This structure provides therefore means whereby a thermo-unit may be readily attached to a socket in a testing-panel or switchboard and similar units may readily be substituted when necessary. This construction also provides at the same time, means whereby the lamp is not broken by any rough handling to which it may be subjected and this meansin the form of a layer of heat insulating material also acts to protect the vacuum thermo-couple from appreciable error due to ordinary sources of external heat. It may be noted that although the cold end of the couple is within the evacuated vessel, the temperature of the cold end is usually that of the surrounding air, because of heat conduction through leads 4 and 6.
WVhat is claimed is 1. A unit comprising a measuring device, said device havin a surrounding evacuated envelope, said umt having means adjacent one end of the envelope for adapting said unit for insertion into a receptacle, and means at the other end of said envelope for preventing fracture of the envelope and protecting said device from heat radiation from without. I
"2. A unit comprising a measuring device. said device including an evacuated vessel containing a thermo-couple, a socket base for said unit adjacent one end of said vessel, and a casingsurrounding the other end of said vessel and containing heat-insulating material.
3. A measuring device comprising an evacuated vessel containing a current-carrying conductor, athermo-couple attached to said conductor, a base attached to one end of said vessel, terminals on said base,
pin 15 is provided wires connecting said conductor and said thermo-couple to said terminals. and a casing surrounding the other end of said vessel and containing heat insulating material.
4. A measuring device comprising an evacuated vessel having a press at one end and containing a thermo-couple at the other end. leading-in conductors for said vessel, a casing surrounding said vessel and spaced from said vessel to provide a chamber between said casing and said other vend of said vessel and means rigidly supporting said vessel in said spaced relation to said casing and carrying terminals for said lead ing-in conductors. V V V 5. A measuring device having a surrounding evacuated envelope, electrical terminals for said device adjacent one end of said envelope, and means at the other end of said envelope for preventin, fracture of the envelope and protecting said device from heat radiation from without.
6. A vacuum thermo-couple tube, leadingin conductors for said tube, a casingfor enclosing said tube, a plug of insulating material for closing one end of said casing. said plug carrying electrical terminals for said leading-in conductors, and heat-insulating, shock-absorbing material between said casing, and said tube.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 12th day-0f December A. D.,
ARTHUR HADDOCK.
