Be' it known that I, HENRI HunnMANN, a. citizen of the Republic of France, residing at Paris, Seine, France, have invented a new and useful Method of Manufacturing Electrical Collectors, Commutators, Controllers, or Interrupters, or Equivalent Devices, oil which the following is a specification.
The object of my present inventionfis to provide method of manufacturing electrical collectors, commutators, controllers, or inter rupters, or equivalent devices, which can be readily and economically manufactured by moulding.
According to my invention the insulating matrix of the device iscomposed of insulating material shaped under sufficient heatin.
a mould in which the conducting strips, or contact pieces, (suitably spaced in accordance with the positions they 'areto occupy) and, if necessary, a hub and means, such as ties, or corrugations, for securing the parts together, have previously been inserted.
I will describe my invention with reference to the accompanying drawing, as, {from this, its nature and how it may be performed will be understood. Figures 1 and 2 show in longitudinal section and transverse section respectively, a device made in accordance with my invention which I will presume to be a collector, or commutator, for a directcurrent dynamo. The device shown in Figures 1 and 2 consists of, or comprises, a hub a provided externally with corrugations, or the like, (such as the grooves b) and of a series of conduct The moulding of the device may be effected in the following manner. A metal cylinder or tube f, of suitable thickness and of a length slightly exceeding that of the device, is provided with a series, of gaps or long tudinal slots g. The length of each gap is the same as the length of the finished device and the width as indicated at Z-is equal to 3 Specification of Letters Iatent.

Into the space between the hub a1 and the cylinder 7' is introduced an insulating mixture (such, for example, as powdered mica and a binding medium) up to a level somewhat higher than the upper end of the hub, and an annular piston gis passed over the mandrel 7c. The mould thus equipped, is heated sufficiently tobring the insulating mixture to a pasty, or viscous, condition and the mixture has become sufiiciently set,
(which time varies with the nature of the insuitable means and the device is then finished.
The method of manufacture hereinbefore explained can be applied to making any similar electrical devices such, for example, as commutators, interrupters, controllers, or the like, comprising metallic members which have to be separated by, or embedded in, insulating material.
hat I claim is '1. The method ofmanufacturing a commutator, which comprises longitudinally slotting a metal cylinder between its ends to form a series of spaced strips, mounting the slotted cylinder in a cylindrical mould,
mounting a cylindrical hub concentrically within the slotted cylinder, and introducing heated insulating material between the cylinder and hub under sutlicient pressure to compress the insulating material between the strips of the cylinder and against the mould.
2. The method of manufacturing a commutator, which comprises longitudinally slotting a metal cylinder between its ends to form a series of spaced strips, mounting the slotted cylinder in a. cylindrical mould, closing the unslotted lower end of the cylinder, mounting a cylindrical hub concentrically within the slotted cylinder, and introducing heated insulating material between the cylinder and hub under sullicicnt pressure to compress the insulating material between the strips of cylinder and against the mould 3. The method of manufacturing a commutator, which comprises longitudinally slotting a metal cylinder between its ends to form a series of spaced contact strips, mount ing the slotted cylinder in a cylindrical mould, closing the unslotted lower portion of the cylinder, mounting a cylindrical hub concentrically within the slotted portion of the cylinder, closing the upper end of the hub, introducing heated insulating material between the cylinder and hub throughout the slotted portion of the cylinder, and ap plying suflicient pressure to the insulating material to compress the same between the strips of the cylinder and against the mould.

The method of manufacturing a commutator which comprises longitudinally slotting a metal cylinder between its ends to form a series of spaced contact strips, pro jecting a plurality of curved pins through the strips into the cylinder, mounting the latter in a cylindrical mould, embedding the unslotted lower end oi the cylinder in the end of the mould, mounting a. cylindrical hub concentrically within the slotted portion of the cylinder, closing the upper end of the hub, introducing heated insulating mate rial between the hub and cylinder throughout the slotted portion of the latter, and applying sufiicient pressure to the insulating material to pack the same around the pins and between the spaced contact strips.
