Description

APPLICATION FILED AUG.3| I921.
Patented Aug. 15, 1922.
IN VEN TOR.
ATTORNEY DIRECTION srener. ronanroivromnns." a
T 0 all *whmn-z'tmay concerns; v 7
Be it known that l, .CAMILLE DUBEAUL", a citizen ofv the Unitedffltates, residingat Chico, vcounty "of Butte, State of California have invented certain new andusefullmprovementsin Direction-Signals for Automobiles; and. ldo 'declare'the follow ng to be a tull, clear, and exact description of the same reference being had to the accompanymg drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application. 1
I v This invention relates to improvements in direction signals for-automobiles, the principal object being to provide.agmechanical signal membeigto leeused instead of the human hand asis nowj commonly done of the car. a few seconds time;
Another object, is to provide a; means whereby the: signal; maybe set by hand. in any one of the various positions required by law, depending on the direction of movement to lie-taken by the, driver of the car. which position will be automatically maintained even thoughthe operators hand is withdrawn. I
A third object is to provide a device of this character the signal arm of which is intended to show both in the day time and at night. and so constructed that any member apt to break may be easily and quickly replaced.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will. be exceedingly effective for the purposes which it is designed.
These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Fig. 1 is a perspective outline of a portion of an automobile, showing my improved signal installed thereon.
Fig. 2 is a detached top plan view of the signal member itself, showing particularly the signal operating mechanism.
Fig. 3. is a fragmentary sideview, partly in section, of the outer end of the operating arm. i
Fig. 4 is a side or face view of the signal member detached.
Serial 485,532. i 1
Specification of Letters Patent. 'f Patented 'Aun'. 15 1922 Application filed August 3,1921. i
lteferringi now more particularly the characters of referenceon the drawings, the
'nuniera'l'l denotes a suitable form-of clamp, :e,'cla :)ted to be removably connected to one of the vertical frames2 ofthe' windshield or similarv member of a. motor vehicle.
Mounted I on the" clamp in a horizontal plane and arranged fora limited amount of swivel movement in a vertical plane relative-to the'clamp, and adapted; to besecured in; any jsuchdpositiom is a cylindrical'tube with a plurality of notches 4.
V =.Turnabiy and slidably mountedfiin "the tube?) is a shaft orarm 5 ,preferably. hollow, .on the rear end of which is a handle member 61ofanysuitable forms. which may bedn. the. form of a single unit ranged to seat in any opposed pair ofthe [0151665'63 provfi' ded around its forward edge Y notches '4 i and normally held seated therein by a; spring 8 secured tojthe clamp andfact- 1119; on the shaft to'move itto the, realm,
Beyond the pin 7'the FSllELfti5l1fiS, bent arn1;,--9, preferably at airightgangley on-(the outer end of which is a signal arm 10. This member comprises a pair of spaced and 111- wardly grooved sheet-metal edge-members 11. coming together at their outer ends and adapted at their outer ends to rest on the H edge of and to be secured onto a disc13 screwed onto the outer end of the arm 9 by means of screws 13 Held by the grooved members 11 and curved outwardly from one end to the other so as to enclose a substantially oval shaped area are translucent panes 14 preferably of celluloid or similar material. andsuitably colored if desired. the ends of which adjacent the ends 12 of the members 11 are supported and held by stamped sheet metalmembers 15. which rest against and are like wise screwed onto the disc 13.
electric light 16 is socketed in the outer end of the arm 9. the wires 17 for which pass through the hollow members 8 and 9 until they are in a convenient plane. to be passed out and connected to the lighting circuit of the carf I I I By means of the construction just described, by merely unscrewing the disc 13, the signal arm as a whole is removed from the arm 9, exposing the lamp 17 while by unscrewing the members 11 and 15, the members 14 may be withdrawn and replaced if necessary.
In the operation of the signal as a Whole,
at the same time to permit of this taking place. After the handle has been turned to set the signal at the angle desired, it may be released, the action of said spring drawing the shaft rearw-ardly and causing "the pin 7 to engage a set of notches corresponding to the new position of the handle, these notches being so shaped thatthe pin will,
be drawn into place therein even if the position to which the signal has been moved by hand does not accurately correspond to the position of the notches with respect to the pm.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfills the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of thedevice, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as donot form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A direction signal including a substantially horizontal sleeve adapted to be secured to a Windshield, a shaft slidably and turnablyv mounted in the sleeve, a handle on the shaft to the rear of the sleeve, angle bend on the shaft ahead of the sleeve, notches cut in the sleeve at that end thereof, a member on the corresponding end of the shaft for engagement with any of said notches, and "spring means acting on the shaft to hold said member in engagement with any of said notches at a time.
2. A direction signal including a substantially horizontal sleeve adapted to be secured to a windshield, a shaft slidably and turnably mounted in the sleeve, aha-ndle on a rightthe shaft to the rear of the sleeve, an integrally formed right-angle bend on'the shaft ahead of the sleeve, and a signal member 'secured onto the end of said bent portion and extending as a continuation thereof,
8. In a direction signal, an arm, a lamp mounted in the outer end thereof, and a hollow signal member, such member comprising a pair of spaced and grooved edge members connected together at their outer ends, a
pair of outwardly curved translucent panes held by the edge members, opposed metal members for holding the inner ends of said translucent members in place, and a disc screwed onto the outer end of the arm and to which the adjacent ends of'the paneholding members are removably secured.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
