Application filed June '8, 19217. Serial No. 476,028.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. Yonne, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shenandoah, in the county of Page and State of iowa, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Gloves or Mittens, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hand coverings, andhas as an object the provision of a glove or mitten the thumb of which is reinforced at its connection with the body of the gar-y ment at the points where the greatest strain comes upon the seams.
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a side view;
Fig. 2 is a view taken from the left of Fig.'1, with the garment flattened from the position shown in Fig. 1;
3 is a detail section on line 3, 3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a. plan view of a blank for the hand portion of a mitten;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a blank for the thumb portion of a two thumb mitten, showing how the same is cut from a strip of material; and
Fig. 6 is a view of a portion of the mitten of Fig. 2 with the end of the thumb removed and the fabric laid open to display the reinforcements.
For purposes of illustration, the two thumb mitten is Chosen, being the type of mitten disclosed in a patent granted to J. 1. Brorby, September 20, 1904, No; 7 70,670, wherein the hand portion of the mitten is indicated at 10 and the thumb at 11.l
The blank from which the hand portion 10 is formed is shown at 12, Fig. a, while the hole for the attachment of the thumb is shown at 18. When the mitten is sewn it is folded about line 14, thus producing a seam at the point and at the outside edge in the well known manner. To provide reinforcement for the seam of the mitten at the points where the greatest strain comes integral tabs 15, 16 and 17 are formed when the thumb hole 13 is cut, the tabs projecting into the hole. When the thumb blank 18 is secured to the margins of the hole' 13 the edges of the thumb blank, which are secured thereto, pass across the bases of the tabs 15, 16 and 17, the curve of the blank 18 being a regular curve at the portions where the v Specification of Letters Patent. PgAgQmQ-,Qd ug, 15,1922. v
same 'cross the bases of the tabs. To provide a reinforcement at a fourth point uponthe seam between the thumb andthe body of the mitten a tab 19 is preferably formed upon thumb blank 18'. rFhe seam securing the thumb blank and the mitten crosses the base' of this tab in a manner already de scribed for tabs 15, 16 and 17. When the seams are formed which attach the thumb blank to the hand blank the seam is carried, as indicated in Fig. 6, in a regular curve about the opening-13 forming the seam at 20. In addition, supplementary seams 21, 22, 23 and 24C are carried about the margins of the tabs '15, 16, 17 andv 19,
which tabs overlap the material of the ad# jacent blank.
The location of the tab 15 is such that it not only reinforces the seam connecting the thumb to the mitten but also reinforces the seam securing together the two edges ofthe thumb blank. The points chosen for this and the other reinforcements are the points,
where the greatest strains upon the seam come when the garment is in use. An additional tab of the size of 15, 16 or 17 could not be provided of the material of the hand blank as is shown by Fig. l and the tab 19 can be cut integral with the thumb blank without waste.'` To prevent the edge of the tabs from catching on external objects all of the tabs are kept on the inside of the y garment as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2.y Obviously the invention could be applied to gloves aswell as to mittens.
The form ofthe blank 18 from which the i which appears between the dotted `line 27 in Fig. 5 and the fulllines at the endof the blank 18 is waste material.
Minor changes may be made in the physical embodiment of the invention without I claim: j j 1. A hand covering comprising, in combination, a hand portion having `a thumb opening, a plurality of tabs integrall with departing from its spirit.
l Therefore only` the amount ofl material said hand portion projecting into said opening., a thumb portion having a tab thereon,
said thumb portion secured to said opening by a seam7 said tabs each crossing said seam at points Where the greatest strain will come, and secured to the material upon the other side of the seam.
2. A hand Covering comprising, in Combination7 a hand portion having a thumb opening, tabs integral with said hand portion projecting into said opening, a pair of thumbs made from a single piece of materia-i secured to said opening by a seam7 a tab integral'with said thumb material, said tabs Crossing` Said seam at the points of greatest strain and secured to the material of the opposite part.
3. A hand covering Comprising in combination'a pair of thumbs made from a single piece of material7 a handportion having a thumb opening, a tab integral With said hand portion projecting across the seam uniting the thumb and hand portion and across the seam closing said thumbs.
in testimony whereof I aiiix my signature hereto.
CHARLES E. YOUNG.
