To all whom/it may concern Be it known that I,Gnonen H. HAYn s, a citizen of the United States, resident of St. Paul, county of Ramsey, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Shackles, of which the following is a specification.
, The object of my invention is to provide a yielding connection between the frame of the vehicle and the forward springs which will take up the jar or forward lurch of the frame when the wheels strike an obstruction or drop into a depression and is designed as a modification or improvement of the device shown in United States Letters Patent No. 1,180,036, issued to me April 18 1916.
In this patent a compression spring is shown interposed between the members of the shackle. This spring is located at a point where it is intersected by the longitudinal axis of the shackle members. My present invention contemplates the use of two springs, one upon each side of the longitudinal axis of the shackle members for the purpose of eliminating any tendency to lateral lurch or sway of the members and provide for a more even compression of the springs.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawing, 2 represents one of the side bars of the chassis and 3 the forward wheel mounted on the axle of the car in the usual way. 4 is a spring of the half elliptic type, pivotally connected at 5 to the forward end of the bar 2. At the rear end of the spring I provide a shackle consisting of a link 6 having its forward end pivoted at 7 to the rear end of the spring, the rear end of the link being pivoted at 8 to a carrier 9 which has a pivotal connection at 10 With a lug 1O on the side bars of the chassis.

The form of the shackle members may, of course, be modified in various ways and still embody the advantageous features herein specified.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination, with a vehicle frame, of a spring having one end attached to said frame and a shackle pivotally connecting the other end of said spring with said frame, said shackle comprising a link and carrier having a comparatively long piv otal bearing uponone another at one end, the other end of said link and carrier being pivotally connected respectively to said spring and frame, and compression springs interposed between said link and carrier, and separated a considerable distance for yieldingly resisting relative movement of said link and carrier toward one another.
2. The combination, with a vehicle frame, of a spring having its forward end attached to said frame and a shackle pivotally connecting the rear end of said spring with said frame, said shackle comprising a link and carrier having a comparatively long pivotal bearing upon one another at their rear ends, the forward ends of said link and carrier being pivotally connected respectively to said spring and frame, and widely separated compression springs interposed between said link and carrier for yieldingly resisting relative movement of said link and carrier toward one another.
3. The combination, with a vehicle frame, of a spring having one end attached to said frame and a shackle pivot-ally connecting the other end of said spring with said frame, said shackle comprising a link and carrier pivotally connected to one anothei at one end, the other end of said link and carrier being pivotally connected respectively to said spring and frame, said link and carrier having laterally projecting lugs and compression springs arranged between said lugs and secured thereto and separated a considerable distance thereby for yieldingly resisting relative movement of said link and carrier toward one another.
4. The combination, with a vehicle frame, of a spring having one end attached to said frame and a shackle connecting the other end of said spring with said frame, said shackle comprising a link and carrier having a comparatively long pivotal bearing upon one another at one end, the other end of said link and carrier being connected respectively to said spring and frame, and compression springs interposed between said link and carrier for yieldingly resisting relative movement of said link and carrier toward one another.
5. A spring shackle comprising a link and carrier having a comparatively long pivotal bearing upon one another at one end, and compression springs interposed between said link and carrier for yieldingly resist ing their relative movement toward one another, said springs being arranged upon 0pposite sides of the longitudinal axis of said shackle, said long bearing preventing relative lateral rocking of said link and carrier.
