Description

E. E. REICH. LOCKING DEVICE FOR PRESSING MACHINES. APPLICATION FILED FEB. 25, 192i.
1,425,695. P n ed Aug. 15, 1922.
PATEN EDWARD was, cmc'ireo, fl mers;
ooKI'NG DEVICE roe" rnn'ssnve MAoHIiIEs;
To aZZw/wm it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD E. R IoH, a citizen of the United States, a nflmgt resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have inventedfcertain new and useful Improvements in Locking Devices for Pressing Machines, of which the mechanism, showing the device in locked pofollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to a, locking device, and more particularly to a locking device for a pressing machine, and has for its eb-- ject the provision of means which willlock down the upper pressing member of sucha machine upon the garment on the lower pressing member.
Another object-is the provision of locking means for the operating trea'dle of amachine.
Other objects will appearyhereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter .de-' scribed-and claimed.
" The invention will be best understood l iy reference to the accompanying:drawings forming'a part of this specification, and in which, 1 I i 1 is side view ofa' pressing machine with my inventionapplied thereto,.the locking device being shown in released posi-"- tion.' N 5 Fig. 2'is' a" detailedview of the locking sition. v
The drawings illustrate a table 6 supported upon legs 7, which are connectedby brace .bars 8. Brackets 9- are mounted on. the table and a stationary pressing member or board 10 is fastened on said brackets, extending lengthwise of the table. A bracket 11, provided with sleeves--12, is fastened to the rear edge of said table, and a' shaft 13 is mounted for vertical movement in said sleeves. A supporting bar 1 1 is adjustably mounted on the upper end of said shaft, as by means of a set screw 15, or in any convenient manner, and an arm 16 is pivoted with one end upon said bar, as at 17 ,and its free end is attached to and supports a pressing member or iron 18, adapted to co-operate with the pressing board 10 beneath the iron, to press garments and the like, as is well understoood. i
A rod 20,is pivoted with one end upon a pin 21, in a bracket 22 fastened beneath the table, and with the other end pivotally engages the lower end of the shaft 13. A collar 23 is mounted upon the intermediate lower. end, which is connected with one end to" treadle lever- 25,

' portion of said rod and a'link 2 1-"is pivotally} it i p v v 'saifdcol'lar and; theother end to an intermediateportion are 1 which has oneend piv aa" so upon a bracket 26 mounted' beneath the" bar 8, and is provided at its other end'with' at foot treadle 27. A- spring es'ismoanred en' the bar 8 and bears beneath the collar 23, adapted; to'normallylrais'e said collaji 1ron 1 8, and a brace rod 29 I tween the members 8 and 6.
The construction above describedfforins" an ordinary construction herecefereused. .To this construction I add-my l'ocki mean s to' reta1n the treadle lever 'andT-th'e' PRGSSIII'QJIQH' in their lowermost position. i
7 s5 s provided be The locking mechanism Ico'mp'rises a ratchet bar 30 provided with ratchet teetlr31 its pivoted; ripen the in 21 of the bracket ;22. p
and a small pedal 38 ing connected to a lug 40 on" the arms-35 .1
. a A. spring 32' 'isc'orfg nected with on'e end tothe ratchetbarand has its other end'connected to the brace rod: 29. A yoke 33' is mounted upon the forward end ofthe'tread'le lever -11a is provided with an integral laterally extending pawl 34,
adapted to engage'the ratchet teethenoftne' bar330, An arm 35 provided withQ-a'li'ook 36 is mounted upon a-pin 37 in 'said" yoke- 33,"? is pivotally mounted upon said pin 37 and has a spring '39 con nected to it, the other end'o'f said spring 315L641 operating a pressing machinewiijh. m
invention attached thereto, the opera steps upon-the treadle 27- placing hisi t'oeuponthe'smaill pedal 38, whichthi ougl'r the spring 39.draws-thehook 3'6 of thearni 35'.
against the bar 30, engaging the'ra'tchet teeth .31 with the pawl 34, thereby locking the pedal in its depressec'l position" and reta ning the iron '181firmly pressed down upon the garment on the board 10.. The friction between the pawl and the ratchet teeth retain the members locked. To release the mecha; nism the operatorsteps upon the treadle 27, but not upon the pedal 38, whereupon the f spring 32 draws'the bar 30 rearward, re-
leasing the ratchet teeth from the pawl. The spring 39 being effective merely to provide becomes effective to raise the'rod 20, shaft thus evident that I have provided effective means to lock the treadlelevei in its lower-: e most position and retain th e iron firmly a yielding connection betweenthe pedal 38 and the arm 35. :The spring 28 thereafter so i pressed down upon the garment on the board, whereas formerly the spring 28 would become effective and raise the iron and its associated members as soon as the downward stroke of the foot and treadle lever were completed.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the'precise details of construction set forth,
but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come withinthe scope of the appended claims.
avlng described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to .secure by Letters Patentis: v
