BRIEF CASE.
Application filed July 21, 1921.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MA KLoMnnRs, a citizen of the United States and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Brief Case, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
This invention relates to brief cases, bags and the like and has for an object to provide an improved construction of corner whereby the front and back walls as well as the intermediate positions may lie close together when the device is empty.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a brief case or other similar article with pressed corners whereby the edge walls may properly fold along the edge and bottom and may lie comparatively flat at the corners either in a square or rounded formation.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a front view of a brief case, constructed according to the present invention.
Figure 2 is an edge view of one corner of the bag shown in Figure 1, the same being taken from arrow 2.
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of the edge walls at the corner, the parts being somewhat separated for better illustrating the invention.
Figure at is a fragmentary sectional view through Figure 3 approximately on line 41-4.
Figure 5 is a detail fragmentary sectional view through Figure l approximately on line 5-5.
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing the bag collapsed.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary view showing one corner of a slight modified form of brief case to that shown in Figure 1.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals. 1 and 2 indicate the front and rear walls while 3 indicates what may be termed the edge walls along the two end edges and the bottom edge of the case. The invention resides in the way the corners are formed in the edge walls so as to permit the bag to lie fiat when not in use and also to present a corner structure which will not wear rapidly.
Heretofore in making brief cases and similar article, the corners were folded and Specification of Letters Patent.

as the case was used these corners were unfolded and refolded as well as presenting extra thickness at these points and obstruc tions which may strike against articles during the use of the case.
In the present instance, each of the corners 4 and 5 is formed as shown in Figures 2 to 5 inclusive. The strip 3 forming the edge walls is pressed at the corners as shown particularly in Figure 5 whereby an en larged or thickened neck 6 is produced between the corner portions 7 and 8 and the central corner portion 9 which is formed by the folding of the edge strip 3, said folding being of the usual accordion fold now in common use. The thickened portion 6 forms a connecting stem in a certain sense which gives way inwardly when the case is closed as shown in Figure 6 whereby the corner portions 7 and 8 may rest against the corner portion 9 and present a comparatively thin structure. It will, of course, be understood that the side edges of the strip 3 are stitched to the front and rear walls 1 and 2 in the usual manner. \Vhen presenting the corner as shown in Figures 3 and 5, the same is formed round so as not to present a sharp corner which is usually injured or broken off. However, if desired, a square corner can be formed as shown at 10 in Figure 7 and the parts pressed accordingly.
The case is preferably made from leather but it may be formed from other material without departing from the spirit of the invention. Only a single central web is shown in the accompanying drawing, but it will be evident that the strip 3 can be folded into as many folds as desired according to the thickness of the brief case ordered.
The invention has been shown on a brief case but it will be evident that it might be used on ladies hand bags and other forms of receptacles.
What I claim is 1. In a brief case, an edge strip for connecting the front and back walls formed with thickened pressed corners shaped to collapse when folding.
2. In a brief case of the character described a corner structure comprising a pressed formation in the edge walls of the ease said pressed formation confining the excess leather to a point spaced inwardly from the corner whereby the corner may be collapsed into a substantially flat position ened portion between therespective folds,
When not in use, said pressed corner being said thickened portion being shaped to be thicker than the adjacent Walls. moved substantially inwardly When the 3. In a brief case, hand bag or the like strip is collapsed.
5 an edge strip formed with folds and with 4. In a bag, brief case or the like, an edge 15 corner formations adapted to lie in snbstanstrip therefor formed into an accordion fold tially flat condition when the strip is col and thickened at the corners to maintain lapsed, said corner formations being pressed the fold around the corner. to produce a rounded section between the I 10 corner of each of the folds and the thicle MAX KLOMBERS.
