Description

retest HAIBPIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. S, 1%22.
Application filed October 19, 1920. Serial No. 417,878.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE TRUMAN CHASE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain.
new and useful Improvements in a Hairpin; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full. clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of the invention is to provide a hairpin for general use which is adapted to be readily inserted and withdrawn without causing the tangling. tearing. or injuring of the hair and when in place will be positively retained against accidental displacement, regardless of the position which it occupies in the hair; and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a side view of the hairpin showing a preferred construction.
Figure 2 is a view of a slightly modified form wherein the shoulders are arranged in an oblique relation with the links or longitudinal center of the pin.
The pin is constructed as in the usual practice of resilient or spring wire having a sufficient temper to yieldingly maintain its normal position or shape. the legs or tines 10 thereof being provided with one or more intermediate offsets or shoulders 11 disposed at an angle to the longitudinal center of the hairpin or the general direction of the legs a which have convergent portions 12 extending from the outer ends of the ofisets or shoulders. one set to tines 10 and the other set to the inner ends of lowermost shoulders 11, to the end that while the insertion of the pin into the hair is facilitated by the obliquely disposed portions 12. the removal of the pin from the hair is opposed or resisted by the abrupt otisets or shoulders '11.
In the modified construction shown in Figure 2, the ofi'sets or shoulders are ob liquely disposed to the legs or longitudinal center of the pin to aiiord a tendency, in withdrawing the pin to move the legs or sides thereof toward each other when longitudinal strain is applied to the looped end of the pin, just as the downwardly convergent portions serve to draw the legs or sides toward each other during the insertion of the in into the hair. In said modified form 0? the pin the oblique offsets are represented at 12 and the convergent extensions at 13.
In operation it is preferable when about to insert the pin in the hair, to squeeze or press the sides toward each other to the position indicated in dotted lines in Figure 1, so that when the pin has been fully inserted and the looped end has been released. the legs or sides will spring outward and thus effectively engage the offsets with the strands of the hair. A similar operation may be effected in withdrawing the pin from the hair so as to disengage the shoulders or ofi'sets from the strands of the hair and facilitate the outward movement.
The angles between the offsets or shoulders and the adjacent portions of the legs or sides of the pin are preferably rounded or curved as shown so as to avoid sharp angles tending to tear or cut the hair, and the body portions of the legs or arms at both the looped and free ends thereof are preferably arranged in substantial parallelism.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is A hair pin consisting of a single length of material having tines provided with a plurality of angularly disposed outwardly directed shoulders. second angularly disposed outwardly directed shoulders between said shoulders and the insert end of the pin, the first mentioned shoulders projecting farther from the median line of the pin than the second mentioned shoulders, portions converging toward the insert end of the pin intermediate the shoulders. elongated portions at the free ends of the tine converging toward the head of the pin. portions converging toward the insert end of the pin intermediate the elongated portion and adjacent shoulders. and an elongated loop forming the head of the pin having sides converging from the first mentioned shoulders movable relatively to each other to move the second and third mentioned portions into contactat their junction.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE TRUMAN CHASE.
