To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ANTHONY KUBIK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dickinson, in the county of Stark and State of North Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garage-Door-Operating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to operating mechanism for the doors of garages, ware houses, factories, or other places, and has for its object the provision of novel means whereby upon the approach of an automobile the door will be automatically opened whereby to permit storing of the automobile without it being necessary for the driver to alight and unlock the door.
An important object is the provision of door operating mechanism of this character which is so constructed that the door is normally held under tension tending to open it, a catch being provided for holding the door closed and this catch means having associated therewith a treadle mechanism engageable by an automobile to effect release of the door.
An additional object is the provision of mechanism of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in construction and installation, highly efiicient in use, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in Which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a garage having a sliding door constructed and mounted in accordance with my invention, this view showing a front elevation of the treadle member,
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view taken through the garage and looking at the inside of the door and showing the mounting thereof,
Figure 3 is a plan View of the approach.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the letter A designates a garage having the usual door opening closed by a sliding door B having rollers C traveling on a trackway of conventional type D. The letter E designates the approach to the garage and F designates the line wires of an electric lighting system.
In carrying out my invention I provide a vto open the door.
grooved wheel 10 journaled at the upper corner at one end of the front wall of the garage and this wheel is preferably mounted in suitable ball bearings whereby it will run over easily. Journaled upon the door atthe adjacent upper corner thereof is a larger grooved wheel 11 also mounted in ball bearings and trained about this wheel 11 is a ropey or cable 12 which has one end trained over the wheel 10 and provided with a weight 13 of sufficient strength to tend The other end of this cable is connected with the farther edge of the door, as shown at 14. Adjacent the wheel 10 is a pivoted buffer arm 15 spaced from a stationary arm 16 with a spring 17 disposed between the arms. Disposed on the cable 12 immediately above the weight 13 is a spring 18 engageable with a movable arm 15 when the door is moved to its closed position, the purpose of this structure being to serve as a buffer and prevent slamming` of the door. It will be observed that on account of the weight there is always a tendency to move the door to its open position.
In order to hold the door shut, I provide a catch member 19 carried by the edge of the door and co-operating with a vertically movable keeper 2O in the nature of a staple. Connected with this keeper is a link 21 which is pivotally connected with one end of the lever 22 which is pivoted intermediate its ends, as shown at 23. Connected with the other arm of the lever is a spring 241 which holds the lever in normal position with the keeper 2O engaging the catch.
In order to effect release of the catch and keeper, I provide a suitable guide 25 mounted in some suitable position in the approach E and mounted in this guide is a rod 26 which has one end connected by a chain 27 or the like with the second mentioned end of the lever 22. At its other end the rod 26 carries a treadle 28 engage-able by the wheels of the motor vehicle to be put in the garage.
Located within the path of travel of the door is a spring-pressed plunger rod 32 which serves as a buer for cushioning the door when it is opened so as to avoid shocks and jars which might be injurious to the mechanism.
The operation of the device is as follows: v
Assuming that the door is closed and held so by means of the catch and keeper,

While l have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is of course to be understood that l reserve the right to make such changes in the form,
construction, and arrangement of ypartsas will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
