UNITED STATES JAMES R. HUBBARD, OF DUNCAN, OKLAHOMA.
BREAST-ACTUATING MECHANISM FOR COTTON GINS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 25, 1922.
Original application filed August 25, 1919, Serial 1\To.- 319,666. Divided and this application filed September 2, 1920. Serial No. 407,774,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES R. HUBBARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duncan, in the county of Stephens and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breast-Aotuating Mechanism for Cotton Grins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to cotton gins and to means by which the breasts of a battery of two or more gins may be simultaneously actuated to release the empty bolls.
Heretofore it has been required to have an operator at each gin stand to regulate the flow of cotton bolls to the gin saws, and to raise the breast to release the emptied bolls.
In my application for patent of which this is a division, Serial No. 319,666,,filed August 25, 1919, I show and describe a device for controlling the flow of the cotton bolls to the gin saws, while the subject-matter of this application is the means for lifting the gin breasts to permit egress of the emptied bolls.
My invention will be described in detail hereinafter and found illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a front View in elevation of a battery of two gin stands showing my improvements installed thereon, and
Fig. 2, an end View.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts in the several views, A designates a suitable base on which is mounted a battery of gin stands l3, B, the number of standsshown being for illustration only, as the usual number units ineach battery will be at least four stands. Each stand is provided with a breast C that is pivotally mounted on the front of the gin, as shown at c, and is adapted to be swung outwardly when the empty bolls are to be released from the gin.
My attachment, which is designed to swing the breasts C outwardly on their pivots 0,
simultaneously, comprises a shaft 1 journaled on beams 2 secured to base A.
Shaft l is provided with an operating handle 3, and arms a rigidly secured thereto. 5 designates a link pivotally secured at one of its ends to the free end of each arm 4, the other end of the link 5 being provided with an eye 6 that pivotally engages a pin 7 on the edge of each breast C. a
In operation when the gins are in opera tion and it is necessary to release the empty bolls, the feed to the gin saws is first discontinued by operation of the feed control mechanism that is shown and described in application filed August 25, 1919 hereinbefore referred to. After waiting a sufficient period to permit the bolls in the gin to be emptied of their cotton contents, the handle 3 is actuated outwardly and through the instrumentality' of arms at, links 5, and the pivotal connection between said links and breasts C, breasts C will be swung upwardly on their pivots c to permit the empty bolls to drop out. The handle 8 is then moved inwardly towards the gin stands and the breasts C will resume their initial position by gravity.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is2- The combination with a gin having a base, beams extending from said base, a pivoted breast hung from its fulcrum, of a rock shaft journaled on said beams, an arm on said rock shaft, a handle for said rock shaft, a link pivoted to said arm and to said breast below the fulcrum of the latter, whereby the breast will move upwardly from its lower end in opening and will return to closed position of itself and by gravity.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
J. R. HUBBARD.
