Description
A. E GOMES,
MATTRESS. 7 APPLICATION FIL'ED OCT. 15, IQZIL v patented ul s, 1922-.
INVENTOR ATTORNEY WITNESS:
SE ATES' ARTHUR E. GOMES, OF YEORIA, ILLINOIS.
MATTRESS.
Application filed October 15, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR E. Germs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented new'and useful Im provements in Mattresses, oi which the fol.- lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to mattresses and an object of the invention is to providea sanitary mattress which is made up into a plurality of compartments each receiving a filler or pillow which permits one or more of the compartments to be renewed without affecting the remainder of the mattress or without necessitating the sending of the mat tress to a mattress factory.
Another object of this invention. is to provide a mattress as specified which is particularly designed for use by children or in sick rooms which will permit the replacing of any soiled section of the mattress, and also to provide a mattress wherein no tufting or stitching is necessary thereby reducing the cost of mattress and also to provide one in which it will be practically impos-- sible to mislead the purchaser as to the stuffing or fillers of the mattress as the fillers may be easily inspected and examined.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description and in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. l is a bottom plan of the improved mattress showing it partly open, to receive the filler.
Fig. 2 is a detail section through the mattress.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary cross section through the mattress taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 1 is a detail view of one of the fillers embodied in the mattress.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the improved mattress comprises an outer casing 1 which is formed into a plurality of transversely extending sections 2 and longitudinal side or edge sections 3 which are substantially rectangular shaped in cross section receiving substantially rec tangula-r fillers 4 which extend the full length of the mattress and are provided to rest upon the bed rails or rails of a spring structure. Each of the compartments 2 is Specification of Letters Patent.

braced at its side edges by strips 5 of stiffening material. so as to lend rigidity to the mattress structure and which facilitates the insertion of the filler or pillows 6 into the respective sections 2. The stiffening material of which the strips 5 are made may be of any well known and approved types of stiffening materials such as belting used in the construction of ladies garments or any of the several well known types of stiifening material. These strips are embodied in the mattress construction, between the fillers or pillows 6 as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings and may be held in place by whip stitching them to the casing 1 if desired. The under sides 4 of the sections 2 are slit longitudinally as shown at 7 the edges along the split being perforated as shown at 8 to receive suitable laces 9 for closing the openings 7 through which the fillers or pillows 6 are inserted into the body 1 of the mattress.
While in the drawings, each of the compartments is shown to contain only one filler or pillow 6, it is to be understood that a number of smaller fillers may be inserted in each section or compartment of the mattress and also that these fillers may be stufied with any suitable material.
It is, of course, to he understood that the invention may be constructed in various other manners and the oarts associated in different relations and, t erefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a mattress composed of an outer casing divided into a plurality of transverse sections and a pair of longitudinal sections along its edges, and individual fillers inserted in each of said sections.
2. In a mattress, a pair of substantially rectangular compartments extending longitudinally along the edge of the mattress, a plurality of transversely extending compartments extending from one of said edge compartments to the other, said transversely extending compartments provided with slits, and individual fillers in each of said transversely extending compartments.
and individual fillers in each of said transversely extending compartments, said transversely extending compartments being reinforced at their edges by strips of stiffening material.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature. ARTHUR E. GOMES.
