Description

WILLCL'AM B. IVIODONALD, or nan/antics, KANSAS.
- i i ADJUSTABLE HINGE.
rasasso.
Application filed July 5,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM B. MCDON- ALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrence, in the county of Douglas and State or Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hinges for gates,.doors, box lids, etc., and one object is to provide a hinge which may be mounted in masonry or wooden door jambs, gate posts and the like.
A further object is to provide a hinge in which the component parts can be readily removed and replaced by others in case of breakage or undue wear.
lthei' objects will hereinafter appear, and in order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is "a side elevation partly in section of the preferred form of hinge.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line H-ll of Fig. 1.
3 is an end elevation.
4: is a side: elevation partly in section of the hinge and a modified form of holder. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a modified form of binge.
In carrying out the invention, I employ a shank 2 threaded at one end and provided at its opposite end with. a transverschead l havingintegral knuckles 6.
8 and 9 designate a pair of plates adapted to be secured to opposite sides of a door, gate or box lid. The plates 8 and 9 are bent at right angles at their rear ends to provide over-lapping portions 10 and 11. respectivcly, the portion 10 being provided with knuckles 12 reinovably connected to the knucrles (i by pintle 14%. The overlapping portion 10 is provided with upper and lower marginal flanges 16 to overlap the corresponding margins of the portion 11, which is slidably mounted in the grooves 18 formed by said portion 10 and the flanges 16.
2'0 designates a tubular holder which is enlarged at one end as indicated at 24 to prevent it from being pulled out of place when embedded in concrete or other masonry gate posts, door jambs, etc.
When the parts are assembled as d sclosed by Figs. 1 and 2, the shank 2 is held 1n place by the holder 20 and the plates 8 and 9are free to swing on the pintle 14,-. Doors, gates,
Specification of Letters Patent.

box lids, etc, of different thickness may be fitted between the plates 8 and 9 by adjusting the plates 9 laterally with relation to the plate 8 and when so adjusted said plates are firmly held in engagement with opposite sidesof the door, gate, or boX lid by bolts or screws placed through the openings 80 in said plates. Fig. 3 shows in dotted linesthe lateral adjustment of the plate 9. Should the shank 2 or one of the plates 89 become broken or worn out it can be readily replaced with another without discarding the entire hinge.
In the form disclosed by Fig. 4-, the hinge is a duplicate of the hinge shown by Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive. but the holder 20 instead of being threaded to receive the threaded Patented July 13, 1922. v
end of the shank 2 has a cavity 20 to re ceive a nut 20 into which the shank 2 is threaded. The nut 20 is placed in the cavity 20 through an opening 21.
In the form disclosed by Fig. 5, the shank 2 has a tapered threaded portion 2 adapted to be screwed into a wooden door amb, gate post, or box. In this form only one plate 8 is employed. Said plate 8 is adapted to be fastened to one side of a gate, door or box lid by bolts or screws placed tirough the openings 30 The pintle 1 1' connecting the head 41:" of the shank 2" and the plate 8?, is removable so that in case either of the aforementioned parts wear out or become broken they can be readily replaced without throwing away the entire hinge.
In addition to the above I reserve the right to such other forms and modifications as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A hinge consisting of a threaded shank, a transverse head at one end of said shank provided with knuckles, a plate adapted to be secured to a door or gate and provided at one end with knuckles adapted to interlap with the knuckles on said shank. means for pivot-ally connecting the knuckles on the head and said plate, and a holder embodying internally threaded means into which the threaded shank may be screwed and secured against accidental longitudinal movement in either direction.
2. In a hinge, two plates having overlapping portions at one end, one of said overlapping portions having upper and lower marginal flanges providing grooves in which against accidental movement in either directhe other overlapping portion is slidably tion. 10
mounted so that one of the plates may be In testimony whereof I alfix my signature adjusted laterally with relation to the com- 111 the presence of two witnesses.
panion plate, a threaded shank operably, W WILLIAM B. MoDONALD. connected to one of said plates and a holder Witnesses: having threaded means into which said 1 G. FISCHER,
threaded shank may be screwed and secured L. J. FISCHER.
