per 7 WILLIAM EXCELL BAKER, 0F WEST NORWOOD, ENGLAND.
IRONING MACHINE.
eas es.
Application filed January 19, 1321.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lViLLiAiii Exonnr. BAKER, a subject of the King of Great Britain and lreland, residing at 62 Gipsy Road, West Norwood, in the county of Surrey, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing Machines, for which I have filed application in Great Britain o. 2087 of 1919, Patent No. 103856), of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ironing machines of the type in which a flat iron of such a weight as will give the necessary pressure is employed and is adapted to reciprocate over a fixed table and it consists of an improved construction which has for its object to obtain better control over the movements of the iron.
Vi e attain this end by imparting the neces sary reciprocating motion to the iron by means of mechanism comprising a travelling belt running over suitably arranged pulleys, a clutch for coupling the iron to the travelling belt above or below the pulleys so as to obtain motion in both directions, and a handle or the like for cpntrolling said clutch arranged to partake of the whole of the movements of the iron.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate this invention Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation,
Fig. 2 is a View in plan thereof, and
Figure 3 is a broken view in front elevation on an enlarged scale-showing the de; tails of the clutch, and,
Figure f is a view in cross sectional elevation of the clutch on an enlarged scale.
Throughout the views similar parts are marked with like letters of reference.
The iron D, which is of such a weight that it creates its own pressure, is coupled by means of a suitable universal joint 0 to an arm G carried by brackets E and E adapted to slide and rock on a fixed bar A carried by the frame X of the machine. At or about the ends of said bar are bearings in which are mounted axles carrying pulleys L and L, one of said axles also carrying a pulley N by which motion can be imparted to it. Running around the pulleys L L is a band M. Passing through the arm G is a shaft 1 carrying at one end a handle H and at the other end a double forked clutch J, either end of which is capable of being brought into engagement with the band M so as to partake of its movement. The clutch J is adapted to slide vertically in a suitable Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 18, 1922.
Serial No. 438,498.
guide P carried by the arm G, and the necessary raising or lowering movement to bring the clutch J into engagement with the band M either above or below the pulleys L L is effected by a lever K on the shaft I which on said shaft being rocked by the handle H engages one or other of two projections R R carried by the clutch J. The board or table C is mounted in any suitable manner on the frame X.
The iron may be removed from the table either by raising it by means of suitable treadle mechanism or by allowing it to travel off the table at either or both ends,
on to a suitable stand or stands.
Instead of mounting the handle or the like for controlling the clutch on the iron D it may be mounted on a slide adapted to run on or in a suitable guide arranged in parallel relation to the bar A said slide being so coupled to the iron D so that it partakes of all its movement.
What I claim is 1. An ironing machine comprising a flat iron, a table carried by a suitable frame over which said iron travels, a bar or the like carried by said frame in parallel relation to said table, a pulley mounted in a hearing at each end of said bar one or said pulleys being adapted to be driven from any source of power, a flexible band running around and between said pulleys, a bracket adapted to slide on said bar, an arm carried by and adapted to rock on said bar, flexible coupling means between said arm and said fiat iron, a double acting clutch carried by said arm and adapted to engage said flexible band, and means for operating said clutch which is so connected with said iron that it partakes of all of its movements.
2. In an ironing machine the combination of a table mounted on a suitable frame, a bar carried by said frame, pulleys mounted in bearings carried by said bar, a driving pulley coupled to one of said pulleys, a band passing around and between said pulleys, a bracket adapted to slide on said bar, an arm carried by said bracket and adapted to rock in relation to said bar, a flat iron attached. to said arm by a universal joint, a shaft running through said bar, a vertical guide carried by said arm, a double forked clutch sliding in said guide, and a hand lever mounted on one end of said shaft adapted to impart motion to said sliding clutch so as to cause it to engage the travelling band.
