Furr-owing-Machines.
Patented Aug-Lust26,1873.
UNITED STATES 1,- FFI CE.
WILLIAM H. RUTLEDGE, OF HAMILTON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN FURROWlNG-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,283, dated August 26, 1873; application filed June 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. RUT- LEDGE, of Hamilton, in the county of Butler and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Furrowing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved machine without the carrying-wheels and hinged brace, and with the foot-rest of central frame removed. Fig. 2 represents a detached portion of the same, including the hinged brace.
My invention relates to that class of agricultural implements used for furrowing out land to be planted in corn, and other kinds of products cultivated in rows; and myimprovement embraces a combination of devices by which the three plows can be governed jointly or severally by adjusting the drivers seat, and by pedals, as hereinafter explained.
The axle A has the tongue at and slotted hounds b b firmly fastened thereto; and the three frames B O D, each carrying a standard, 0, and plow d, are hinged to the rear side of the axle A. Each of the plow-frames is furnished with a pedal, 8, by which it can be elevated by the attendants feet. The rearmost cross-pieces of the plow-frames B D are provided with inwardly-projecting rounded ends, as represented at e,- and two like projections extend out laterally from the central frame G, in the same line with the projections e. The drivers seat E is provided with legs ff and g g, and the legs 9 g are slotted and placed astride the hounds b b, respectively. Within the slots of legs 9 g friction-wheels with axlepins are placed, and revolve within the lower ends'of the slots, in which they are placed whenever the seat is adjusted forward and backward. An adjustable yoke, h, is connected by pivots with the seat-legs g g, which serves to fasten the seat in the positions to which it can be adjusted. Notches it" t are made on the hounds b b,'into which the yoke will fall for this purpose. The legs f f are each furnished with grooved blocks J J. The
front half of each block J is provided with two flanges, projecting inwardly, to form a groove in which the rounded ends 0 of the rear frame-piece of thecentral frame 0 work; and the rear half is provided with like lateral grooves on their outer sides, for the rounded ends 0 of the rear frame-pieces of the two outer frames B D to work in. These blocks or feet J J are rigidly secured to the bottoms of legs f f, and move forward and rearward with the seat E when it is adjusted.
When the seat is adjusted so that the yoke it rests in notches i, the two outer frames B D are released from the grooved blocks J J, and can be elevated or depressed by the driver, with his feet, independently, and the central frame O remains connected with the blocks J J, as represented in Fig. 1. When the seat is adjusted so that the yoke h rests in notches i, all three of the plow-frames B O D will be connected with the blocks J J, and can be raised and depressed by the movement of the driver on the seat, as he, can tilt the seat and raise its rear end, and with it the frames and their plows. And when the seat is so adjusted that the yoke it rests in notches i, the two outer frames B D are connected to the seat by the grooved blocks J, and the central frame 0 is released, and can be elevated or depressed by the drivers feet. When'the seat is connected, in the manner described, with all of the plow-frames, they, with the plows, canbe elevated by the driver, w'ho,-while upon the seat, can raise it at its rear end by moving for-' will bear against the angular corner of the rear end of the tongue a or the axle A, and retain the seat in an elevated position, with all the plow-frames connected therewith, in the manner described.
The friction-wheels working in the slots of legs 9 g, and the slots of the hounds b 1), admit of the tilting movements, as well as the longitudinal adjustments of the seat.
I propose to use a spring to hold the yoke h in the notches made in the hounds, and to attach a cord, like cord m, to the yoke, by which it can be readily operated by the driver on his seat.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of grooved. blocks J J with the tilting seat E and hinged plow-frames B O D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the slotted and WILLIAM H. RUTLEDGE.
