Be it known that I, CHARLES D. BoNsALL,

The sheets arepreferably of the size and the reinforcing ribs are of such form as make it possible to press the sheets on smaller, lighter presses than are required for presssheets havin the type of reins or corrugations commonly used forcing r1 at the present time.
The thrusts of a cargo against theend wall of a car maybe of a general character tending to tear the end wall from its attachment with the car frame orv they may be of a local character tending to perforate or distort the end panel at some particular point. The point at which the end wall structure is subjected to the greatest thrusts of the cargo, resulting fromthe sudden starting or stopping ofthe car, depends largely uponthe character ofthe cargo. If the cargo consists of material in bulk, such, for example, as grain, the cargo thrusts are greater adjacent the vertical center of the end than at points adjacent to sides. lf the cargo consists of relatively heavy objects, for examplepiping, railroad rails or the like, which, due to their weight, do not. extend far above the flooring of the car, the lower portion of the end wall is subjected td greater thrusts than the upper portions thereof. I therefore'contemplate as one of the objects of this invention to provide a car end structure which will have the necessary strength and rigidity'to withstand the general thrusts and stresses due to the'shifting of the cargo and to also provide the end structure with novel reinforcements, which will resist the various local thrusts of the cargo.
A further object of the invention is to provide an end structure, of the above character, `in which the sheets are overlapped at their meeting edges and are provided with novel reinforcing ribs so arranged with 'relation to each other as to provide the lower portion of the end with greater reinforcement than the upper portion of the car so as to resist the inertiathrusts of the cargo adjacent the flooring of the car. The said reinforcing ribs are so formed as to provide maximum strength adjacent the vertical center of the end so as to'withstand the cargo thrusts adjacent the vertical center line of the end.
Afurther object of the invention is to pro#y ing strains which tend to distort the car from its rectilinear shape. Such strains `usually result from the swinging motion of the car due to the roughness of the track or when the car rounds a curve.

Referring to the drawings, 10 designates the ridge pole, 11 the purlins, 12- the side plates, 13 the corner posts, 14 the end sill, 15 the side sills, 16 the buffer block, 17 the outer side sheathing and 18 the inner lining of the car.- The end wall structure of the car is made up of a plurality of relatively nai'- row metal sheets which are preferably horizontally disposed 'and formed with lieinforcing ribs, which extend across the car from side to side thereof. lVhile I have illustrated and will describe a sheet metal end structure of horizontallydisposed sheets having reinforcing4 ribs which extend across the car, it'w'ill be obvious that the sheets might be arranged vertically'fwithout departure fiom the spirit' of my invention. The metal end structure consists preferably of an upper sheet 19, a lower sheet 20, and a plurality of intermediate sheets 21f2la. The meeting edges of the sheets are overlapped and riveted together by rows of rivets 22. The vertical edges of the sheets are provided with attaching flanges 23, which overlap the side walls of the car and are secured to the corner posts by bolts 24. The upper edge of the upper sheet 19 is preferably bentv over on diagonal lines to provide a flange 25 which supports the ridge pole 10 and purlins 11, taking the place of the ordinaryl end plate usually employed. The
bending of the sheet 19 on diagonal lines gives the flange 25 a downward slope corresponding to the slope of the car roof and also increases its width toward its extremities which may be attached to the car framing in any suitable or preferred manner. In the drawings I have shown the said extremities attached to the side plates l2 by angular attaching elements 26. 'I he lower edges of the sheets 19--21-21a which overlap the upper edges of the adjacent sheets are formed with out-pressed reinforcing ribs or flanges 27 providing beams extending horizontally across the end wall.- The middle portion of each of these reinforcements is in the form of a web having a 'free edge, the web being preferably angular in cross section. The said ribs preferably taper in depth toward the side of the car, the tapered ends being pressed to provide hollow or channel shaped portions adjacent the side walls of the car. ,The lowerA flange 28 of the channel portion is riveted to the adjacent sheet by rivets 29. The out-pressed rigidifying ribs 27 .preferably terminate within the plane, of the angular attaching 4at points adjacent the loverlapped and the flanges 23 and the channel portion of said ribs is preferably open at. the outer ends.
By providing the lower edges of the metal sheet with reinforcing ribs which have anfangle bar configuration adjacent the cated by means of relatively small presses and which at the same time is strengthened by reinforcements so placed as to give'the structure very great strength and rigidity as against both cargo thrusts and weaving stresses. It may be noted that the central portions of the reinforcing ribs 2T maybe made of a greater depth than the end portions witliout conflicting with the provision of the Interstate Commerce Commission rei'lating to end ladder clearance between adjacent cars.
In order to prvide an effective resistance against the heavier cargo thrusts occurring floor of the car the sheets 21a at the lower portion of the end structure are preferably narrower than the upper sheets 21 so that the reinforcing ribs 27 will be'closer together in this region.
The end wall structure may be provided with an end lining, ldesignated generally at 30, consisting preferab y of vertical nailing Strips 31, bolted to the end panel as indicated at 32 so as'to extend transversely of the rigidifying ribs 27, and of horizontally disposed lining boards 33 whichmay be nailed or otherwise suitably secured to the nailing strips 31. l
The metal sheet. illustrated in Figf8 of the drawings is different from the form of sheet illustrated in the preceding figures in that the ends of the channeled Iportions 27h- 27b of the rigidifying ribs 27a are closed instead of being open, the attaching flanges 23a extending for the full width of the sheet and the channeled portions 27h merging into the sheet at the angle bends providing 'such flanges. This modified form of the invention is not specifically claimed herein, being the subject matter of a divisional application filed August 21, 1920, Serial N o. 405,017.
IVhile I have described my invention in one specific embodiment and a suggested modificatiomit will be obvious that further modifications might be made in the structure without departure from my invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the. exact structure shown and described except in so far as specific limitations may appear in the appended claims.

11. A sheet metal end panel for a railway 4car comprising a metal sheet formed with a pressed rigidifying rib which is substan tially L-shaped7 at its middle portion and substantially channelshaped at its ends.

A sheet metal end wall structure for a railway car comprising a pluralityof horizontally disposed sheets the lower edges of which overlap the upper edges of adjacent sheets and are formed with pressed rigidifying ribs which at their middle are in the form of a web having a free edge and at their ends are channel-shaped.
13. A sheet metal wall structure for a railway car comprising a plurality of horizontally disposed sheets the lower edges of which overlap the upper edges of adjacent sheets and are formed with out-pressed rigidifying ribs which are of angle bar configuration and of greatest depth adjacent the vertical center line of the end and terminate in hollow tapering portions adjacentthe sides of the car.
14. A sheet metal end wall structure for a railway car comprising a plurality'oi horizontally disposed metal sheetsv of various widths, the lower edges of which overlap the upper edgesl of adjacent sheets and are lformed with out-pressed rigidifying ribs which areof angle bar configuration and of greatest depth adjacent the vertical center line of the end of the car and terminate in -tapering portions adjacent the sides of the car; the lower portion of said structure being made up of the narrow sheets and the upper portion of the lstructure being made up of the wide sheets.

A sheet metal end panel for a railway car comprising a metal sheet formed with an out-pressed rigidiifying rib of angle bar configuration at the middle and having its ends bent over on diagonal lines to provide channel-shaped portions which taper in depth and which are open at their ends ad- 'acent the sides of the car.
16. An end Wall structure for a railway car comprising -a plurality of metal end sheets overlapped and secured together, and each formed with a single reinforcing rib substantially parallel with the line of joinder'of said sheets, the sheets in the region of the end .subjected to the severest cargo thrusts being narrower than the other sheets so that the ribs stand closer together in this region.
17. An end wall structure for a railway car comprising a plurality of metal end sheets overlappediand secured together one above the other and each formed with a single, substantially horizontal reinforcing rib, the sheets near the bottom of the end vforcing rib, said rib b'eing narrower than the upper sheets, so
that the ribs stand closer together in the lower part of the structure than in the upper part.
18. An end wall structure for a railway car comprising a plurality of metal end sheets overlapped and secured together one above the other and formed with ribs integral with said sheets, respectively, along the lines of joinder of said sheets, the sheets near the: bottom of the end being narrower .than the upper sheets, so that the ribs stand closer together in the lower part of the structure than in the upper part.

An end wall structure for a railway car comprising a plurality of metal end sheets arranged one above the other and overlapped' andsecured together, the lower overlapping edges of said sheets being bent to form reinforcing ribs and the sheets in the lower part of the end being narrower than the upper sheets', so that the ribs stand closer together in thelower part of the structure than in the upper part.

An end wall structure for a railway car comprising a plurality of nietalend sheets arranged one above the other and overlapped and securedltogether, the lower overlapping edges of said sheets being bent to form reinforcing ribs, the remaining portions of. said sheets being plane and the sheets in the lower part of the end being narrower than the upper sheets, so that the ribs stand closer together in the lower part of the structure than in the upper part.

An end, wall structure for a railway car, comprising a plurality of'metal end sheets arranged one above the other and overlapped and secured together and each formed with a single, substantially horizontal, integral rib, the lower sheets being narrower than the upper sheets, so 'that the ribs stand closer together in the lower part of the. str'ucture than in the upper part.
22. An end'wall structure for arailway car comprising a plurality of metal end sheets overlapped and secured together and each formed with a single, integral vlreinbeing substantially parallel with thev lines of. joinder .-,of the sheets, certain of said sheets being narrower than other sheets to bring .the `reinforcing ribs closer together in the portion ofthe car end subject' to greater stresses.
23. An end wall structure for a railway` car comprising a plurality of metal end sheets overlapped and secured togetherand formed along their overlapped edgesA with ribs integral with said sheets, respectively,
certain of the sheets being narrower than the other sheets soas to bring said ribs closer together in the region of the end subi jected to the greater stresses.
24. An end wall structure fora railway car comprising a plurality of metal end sheets secured together and each provided with a single projecting reinforcement which said reinforcements are substantially parallel with the lines of joinder of the sheets, the remaining portions of the sheets being plane and certain of said sheets being narrower than the others to bring said reinforcement closer together in the region of the car end requiring greatest reinforcement.
25. f Xn end wall structure for a railway carcomprising a plurality of metal end sheets overlapped and secured together, the overlapped edge portions of the sheets being bent away from the planes of the sheets to form projecting reinforcing ribs, and the eX- tremities only of said ribs being bent toward the plane of the sheets and secured, in each case, to the face of an adjacent sheet.

An end wall structure for a railway car comprising a plurality of metal end sheets overlapped and secured together, the overlapped edge portions of the sheets being bent away from the planes of the sheets to form projecting reinforcingribs, and the extremities only of said ribs being bent toward the planes of the sheets and provided with flanges secured flatwise, in each case,
-ties only of which ribs are bent toward-the plane of the sheets and` are secured, in each case, to the face of an adjacent sheet.
28. An end wall structure for a railway car comprising -a plurality of' metal end sheets overlap'ped'and secured together, the
overlapped edge portions of the sheets being ben-t away from the sheets to form projecting reinforcing ribs, the remaining portions of the sheets beingplane, and the ,extremities only of said ribs 'being bent toward the sheets and secured, in each case, to the face of the adjacent sheet. v

An end wall structure for a railway car comprising a plurality of metal end sheets overlapped and secured together, the overlapped edge portions of the sheets being bent` away from the planes of the sheets to forni projecting reinforcing ribs, the middle fportion of the edge of each such rib being free and the ends of the. same bent and at tached to an adjacent sheet. l
