To all whom it may concern. I
Be it known that I, JULrUs D. HAYNs- WORTH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric Ovens, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to ovens and particularly to ovens adapted for baking enamelled or japanned articles or for otherwise heattreating articles, and it has for its object to provide a sectional oven which may be shipped in knock-down form and which may be easily and quickly assembled at the place of use.
In practising my invention, I provide a double-wall back mounting-panel having a channel adjacent its edges and around its en.- tire periphery. I provide two double-wall side panels each having a channel adjacent its upper and lower edges. I provide a top and a bottom panel adapted to have their edges located in the channels at the top and the bottom of the back and the side panels. I provide a. front and a rear metal skeleton frame so connected as to hold all of the panels in close operative engagement. I provide a door panel adapted tobe mounted on the front frame by suitable hinges and a bottom front panel to be located below the door at the front of the oven.

7 Referring more particularly to Figs. 41 to 16 inclusive, a back mounting panel 20, illustrated in Figs. 4C, 5 and 6, comprises an outer sheet metal wall member 21, substantially rectangular in contour and formed with in turned edge portions 22 at each of the four edges. An inner sheet-metal wall member 23, smaller in area than the member 21, is providedwith integral down and out-turned portions 24 at each of the four edges. The construction of the member 23 prov-ides for a space between the two walls 21 and 23 which may be filled'with suitable heat-insulating material 25. A plurality of rivets 26, extending through the out-turned portions 24; and the member 21 serve to hold. the member 23 against the member 21. The above recited construction of the members 21 and 23 provides a channel 27 which extends ad jacent to and inside of the flange portions 22 substantially coextensive with the periphery of the member 21.
A plurality of side panels 28, illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10, severally comprise an outer sheet-metal. wall member 29 having inturned flange portions 30 at the top and the bottom thereof, An inner sheet-metal wall member 31 is provided with inturned sideflanges 32 andwith down and out-turned flange portions at the top and the bottom edge. Rivets 26,extending through flange portions 33, hold the inner wall member 31 against the outer wall member. 29. IIeat-insulating material 25 may be located between the two walls to prevent excessive flow of heat therethrough.

are adapted to engage each other to provide a double-wall panel within which heat insulating material may be placed. Screws 37 may be employed to holdthe two walls and 36 in proper operative position relatively to each other.
A bottom front panel, of substantially the same construction as that of the back mounting panel, is illustrated in Figs. 11 to 13 inclusive and comprises an outer sheet-metal member 38 having inturned flanges at three of its edges. An inner sheet-metal wall 39 has one inturned flange portion and three down and out-turned flange portions 40. The member 39 may be held in its proper operative position on the member 38 ,by means of a plurality of rivets 26 extending through the out-turned flange portions 40 and the member'38.
The construction of the two members 38 and 39 is such as to form a channel extending adjacent three of, the four edges of the bottom front panel.
A door panel 41 comprises an outer sheet metal member 42 substantially rectangular in contour and an inner sheet-metal member 43, the member 43 having down and outturned flange portions at the four edges. A metal framework, comprising a plurality of flat metal strips 44, is located on the outside of the sheet-metal member 42 and extends beyond the edges thereof a short distance. The walls 42 and 43 and the members 44 may be secured to the member, 42 by a plurality of rivets 26. Hinges 45 are riveted or bolted to the door panel at one edge and a door latch 46 is pivotally mounted thereon at the other edge. Heat-insulating material 25 may be located between the inner and the outer wall member, as hereinbefore described in connection with the back mounting panel.
In order to hold the oven together and to maintain all of the panels in close operative engagement, with each other, two skeleton frames are provided, at the back and at the front o'fthe assembled oven, respectively. Each frame comprises two vertically extending angle bars 47, a top and bottom connecting member 48 and a top connecting angle member 49. At the rear frame, the member 48 is riveted directly to the members 4'7, as is also the angle member 49. A plate is riveted to each of the members 47 which are located atthe front of the furnace near the bottom end of these members, and the bottom front member 48 is riveted to the mem- A second bar '48 is riveted to the members 50 at. the top thereof and constitutes a cover strip for the top edges of the bottom panel.
Additional plates 51 are riveted to the top members 47 to provide means for riveting the front member 49 thereto. lllembers 52, substantially of Lshape, may heriveted 'tofthe bottom of the corner angle bars 47 to provide greater supporting surface on the floor on which the oven may be placed.
A relatively short bar 53 is riveted to each of the members 47 adjacent the bottom, and the front and back frames are connected by means of a bar 54 bolted to the members 53. The front and back frames are secured against the assembled panels, not only by means of the bar members 54 at each side of the oven,'but also by means of crossed rods 55 located at the top and bottom of the oven. The threaded ends of the rod 55 extend through suitable openings in the angle bars 47, and nuts 56 and washers 57 are provided to permit of drawing the front and back frames together to secure close operative engagement thereof with the assembled panels and of the individual panels one with an other.
A catch 58 is mounted on one of the front anglebars 47 to co-operate with the door latch 46 to hold the door in its closed position.
A ventilating opening 59 may be provided in the top panel, and a chimney member 60 be placed therein to permit of ventilating the furnace chamber.
Means for permitting air to enter the furnace chamber may comprise a suitable opening formed in the bottom front panel covered with an adjustable ventilator 61.
An electric heating element (not shown) may be located in the oven chamber near the bottom thereof and extend upward not higher than the height of the bottom front panel to insure that the space in the over chamber available for holding the material being treated shall be substantially coextensive with the door panel 41.
The method of assembly of the oven is substantially as follows. The rear skeleton frame, comprising the angle bars 47 and 49, the cross bar-48 and the bar members 52 and 53 riveted to the angle bars, may be as sumed to be assembled and to be laid on any suitable substantially horizontal sur face. The back mounting panel 20 may then be placed in its proper operative position within the back frame. Place the side panels 28 in proper operative relation to the back mounting panel with the rear edge located in the corresponding channel portion 27. Then place the top. and bottom panels with three. of their edges located in the channels of the back and side panels, respectively. Place the bottom front panel in its proper operative position after which the assembled front skeleton frame, hereinbefore described, may be placed loosely upon the top edges of the assembled panels. The bars 54 may then be bolted to the extension bars 53, the upper end of the front frame being raised to slightly decrease the distance between the bolts which secure the member 54 to the extension bars 58. This distance is made relatively small to insure that the front skeleton frame will clamp tightly against the assembled oven panels when the top crossed rods 55 are placed in their proper operative position and the nuts 56 screwed thereon. The cross rods 55 may now be placed in position and the nuts 56 tightened thereon.
The door panel 41 may be placed in position and the hinges suitably riveted or bolted against the cooperatng angle member 47.
The assembled oven may then be so moved as to rest in its normal operative position on the supporting surface, after which the heating element (not shown) and the trays, may be inserted in their proper operative positions.
It may be noted that the device embodying my invention provides a back mounting panel with which a plurality of said panels, a top and a bottom panel are operatively associated, the back mounting panel being provided with a channel in which the edges of the co-operating panels may be located. The device embodying my invention also provides a plurality of panels which may be easily and quickly assembled and disassembled whenever necessary, thus permitting of shipping the oven in knocked-down form and of easily and quickly assembling the same at the place of use.
Various modifications may be made in the device embodying my invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof and I desire that only such limitations shall be placed thereon as are imposed by the prior art or are specificially set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention 1. An oven comprising a back mounting panel having a channel in one face adjacent its periphery, a top and a bottom panel having one edge located in a co-operating portion of said channel, side panels having one edge located in a co-operating portion of said channel, a bottom front panel having a channel in one face adapted to fit over one edge of the bottom panel, a rear metal frame, a front metal frame and rods for clamping said frames against said oven panels.
2. An oven comprising a back panel having a channel in one face adjacent its periphery, top, bottom, front and side panels each having one edge located in a portion of said channel, and a metal frame for supporting said oven and for maintaining said panels in operative relation to each other.
3. An oven comprising a back panel substantially rectangular in contour and having channels in one surface adjacent the edges, tWo substantially rectangular side panels having a channel adjacent the top and bottom edges thereof and having one of their other edges located in one of the channels of said back panel, a top and a bottom panel each having edges located in the channels of said back and said side panels, a bottom front panel substantially rectangular in contour and having a channel adjacent three edges thereof and adapted to engage co-operating edges of the bottom and side panels, and means for maintaining said panels in close operative engagement with each other.
4. An oven comprising a substantially rectangular rear frame, a back mounting panel located therein, a plurality of side panels, top, bottom and front bottom panels operatively engaging each other and the back mounting panel, a front frame, means for drawing said frames toward each other and against said assembled panels and a door supported by said front frame.
