The machine shown, by way of illustrat- .ing a form of my invention, comprises a base 1 having fixed thereto and supported thereby the vertical cylinder 2 and the rods 3, the cylinder having the members 1 and 5 extending oppositely therefrom to terminations in the respective collars 6 and 7 fixed on the rods, whereby the several parts are braced relatively.
A head 8 is provided with the oppositely disposed collars 9, which are engaged on the rods 3 by the nuts 10 and 11, whereby the position of the head is adjustable.
A cylinder 12 is fixed to and rises from the head 8. and a rectangular female form or die 13 is fixed to and extends downwardly from this head, the sides of the die having their lower inner edges beveled.
A piston 1 1, which acts in the cylinder 12, is connected by arod 15, acting through the head 8, with an ejector 16 which acts in the die 13.
A piston 17, which acts in the cylinder 2,

Coiled springs 21 are carried by the bearing 20, on opposite sides of the rod 18, and
are held in place by the bolts 22 which extend through the bearings. These springs 21 support a table or hearing plate 23 which is thrust upwardly thereby upon'the upward movement of the bearing 20.
The table 23, of generally rectangular form as shown. has fixed, in the ends thereof, the bifurcated bearings 24, which carry the horizontal pintles 25 disposed parallel to the table ends. Collars 26, adapted to move freely on the rods 3, are provided with lugs 27 engaged flexibly between the bifur-' cations of the bearings 24 by the pint los '25, one of the lugs making a free engagement with the corresponding pintle, whereby the table 23 is permitted a limited universal adjustment.
A male die or form is carried by the table 23 and comprises the rectangular head 28 together with the movable angular sections 29, similar to and adapted to enter the form 13. The die head 28, is fixed to the table 23 by the struts and isengaged by the blocks 31 fixed to the inner faces of the sections 29 to guide and hold the latter in the desired relation to the head and table. The die sections 29, having the aligned vertical surfaces 29 forming sides at right angles to the aligned vertical end surfaces 29, are supported by and movable on the table 23, to apply final pressure to the sides. ends and corners of the box after it has been carried by the rising head 28 into the form 13 and against the ejector 16 in the elevated position thereof.
The sections 29 are reciproca'ted on the table 23 (in the general direction of the diagonals of the form but with freedom for ad justment) by the differential movement of the bearing 20 relatively to the table 23, due to the compression and expansion in the springs 21, and by the action of the piston rod 18 through its extension 32, the yoke 33 carried thereby and the toggle links or bolts 3 hinged to the collar and to the sections.
The extension 32 on the rod 18 is provided with the bearing 35, on which the yoke 3-3 is movable, and with the hub 36 extending freely through the yoke and on which the latter is movable. A cup shaped bearing 37 is mounted. on the hub in position to hold the v e ector -16.
yoke in place thereon and a bolt 38 extends through this bearing and the extension 32 into the top of the rod 18, to fix these parts together in detachable relation.
The yoke 33is provided with the bifur cated bearings 39; pintles 40 are engaged freely in the respective bearings; the links 34 extend through the respective pintles between the corresponding bifurcations where they are fixed by the nuts 41 and 42, and pins 43 fixed in the corners of the respective sections 29 parallel to the respective pintles' 40 extend freely through and provide bearings for eyes 44 which are adjustable by screw engagements on the links 34; the pintles and eyes being permitted a rocking and lateral movement with relation to their bearings for reciprocating the sections 29 while permitting their limited universal movements and automatic adjustment to the materials under pressure.
Motive fluid is supplied for the operation of the respective pistons 17 and 14 to operate the male die and the ejector, by a conduit 45 having a branch conduit 46 connected with the bottom of the cylinder 2, under control of a three way valve 47, and a branch conduit 48 connected with the top of the cylinder 12, under control of a three way valve 49.
The valve 47, which can be set to connect the cylinder 2 with the conduit '45 or the atmosphere, is operated by a rod 50 which extends upwardly through and is journalled in a segmental bracket 51 fixed to the head 8. The rod 50 is turned by its arm 52, which is movable over the bracket by a handle adapted to engage the notches 54 and 55 of the bracket, to hold the valve in position for supplying motive fluid to the cylinder 2 and to exhaust thesame to the atmosphere.
the handle being disengaged from the bracket by drawing the former down against the action of the spring 56 supported therein by the bolt 57 fixed to the arm.
The yalve 49, adapted to be set to connect the cyllnder 12 with the conduit 45 or the atmosphere, is operated by a lever 58, whichis normally held in the elevated position by a spring 59 connected therewith and with the head 8, the valve being thus held in position for-cutting the cylinder 12 off from the conduit 45 and connecting it with the atmos' phere. A pawl 60 is pivoted to the leve 58, 1n the path of the table 23', and rises to permit the table to pass it in moving upward, a lug 604 on the pawl locking it to the lever 58 in the reverse movement. In descending, the
engagement of the table with the pawldepresses the lever 58 against the action of the spr1ng59, and operates the valve 49 to admit- -motive fluid to the cylinder 12, thereby forcing down .the
ward movement and having the bottom of the article pressed against by the male die head 28. The male die 1S thereby held against further upward movement, but the piston together with its rod are permitted a further upward movement by the compression of the springs 21, and the yoke 33 caused to act through the bolts or toggles 34 upon the angular sections 29, thrusting them from'their inner positions toward the respective corners of thefemale die, thereby pressing the sides or sides, and ends as Well as the corners of the article. As the male die sec tions have a limited universal movement, permitting them to adjust their positions to accommodation with the box walls, the latter receive a substantially uniform pressure. The pressing operation having been effected, the valve'47 is operated to release the motive fluid in the cylinder 2, the piston 17 together with the parts carried thereby descend, the table 23 acts through the part 60 on-the lever 58 to operate the valve 49, motive fluid is admitted to the cylinder 12, and the piston 14 is depressed, operating the ejector 16to push The sections 29 of? the male die are. automatically withdrawn; to their initial position by the ex pansion of the springs 21, and the separation of the bearing 20 and the table 23 thereby, by which the toggles 34 are caused to retract the sections. Y
' Having described my invention, I claim "1. In a box pressing machine, the combi similar cross-section and adapted to press a box therein, said male form having relatively movable angular sections and means for expanding saidsections simultaneous approximatelyin the directions of the diagonal of said forms fwhile, permitting their universal movement for adjustment to the material.
' 3. In a box pressingemachine, a stationary female form openhatits bottom, an automatically acting ejector adapted to reciprocate in said form, and a vertically reciproeating male form adapted to enter said female form and press a box upwardly against said ejector, said male form having sections adapted to move transversely to the vertical movement thereof and means for effecting the transverse movement in differential relation to the vertical movement.
4. In a'box pressing machine, the combination with a female form having angularly disposed internal surfaces, of a male form having a head and relatively movable sections each provided with angularly disposed surfaces substantially parallel to surfaces aforesaid, means for reciprocating said male form and means for reciprocating said sections so as to move said surfaces of each section simultaneously toward respective surfaces of said female form.
5. In a box pressing machine, the combination with a female form and an ejector adapted to reciprocate in said form, of a sectional male form adapted for coacting with said female form to press a box therein and mechanism for entering said male form in said female form and thereafter expanding the sections of said male form.
6. In a box pressing machine, the combination with a female form and fluid pressure mechanism for ejecting a box from said form. of a sectional male form adapted for coacting with said female form to press a box therein, fluid pressure mechanism for thrusting said male form into said female form and differentially acting mechanism operated by said fluid pressure mechanism second named for subsequently expanding the sections of said male form in said female form. 1
7. In a box pressing machine, the combination with a female form, of a coacting male form having a head and sect-ions movable relatively to said head, a reciprocating member, and toggle mechanisms connecting said member with said sections to effect their movement.
8. In a box pressing machine, the combination with a female form, of a reciprocating table, a male form having a head fixed to said table and sections movable relatively to said head on said table, mechanism for reciprocating said table and said male die and differentially acting mechanism for reciprocating said sections relatively to said head and table. 9. In a box pressing machine, the combination with a. female form, of a male form having laterally movable sections, a reciprocarting device for carrying said sections, a reciprocating rod, means whereby said rod reciprocates said device and is movable relatively thereto, and means whereby the movement of said rod relatively to said device reciprocates said sections.
10. In a box pressing machine, the combination, with a female form, of a reciproeating male form having laterally movable sections, a reciprocating rod, mechanism comprising one or more springs for carrying said male form to the approximate limit of its movement in said female form, and mechanism operated by said rod on the compression of said springs for expanding said sections.
11. In a box pressing machine, the combination with a stationary female form, of a male form having a head and sections movable relatively thereto, means for reciprocat ing said male form, and differentially acting means for reciprocating said sections and permitting their automatic adjustment relatively to an article pressed thereby in said female form.
12. In a box pressing machine, a form having a head and sections movable relatively to said head, in combination with a reciproeating rod, a yoke carried by said rod and movable relatively thereto, and toggle links pivotally connected to said yoke and to said sections respectively.
13. In a box pressing machine, a form having a head and reciprocating sections movable relatively thereto in angular relation, in combination with mechanism for reciprocating said sections, said mechanism comprising oscillatory members permitting said sections to move laterally relatively to their reciprocating movements.
14. In a box pressing machine, the combination with a base having a cylinder fixed thereto, rods fixed to said base, a head fixed to said rods and a female form fixed to said head, of a piston adapted to reciprocate in said cylinder, a piston rod provided with a bearing reciprocated by said piston, one or more springs carried by said bearing, a table connected by said spring or springs with and movable relatively to said bearing, guiding means movable on said rods and flexibly connected with said table, a male form having expansible reciprocating sections carried by said table, and means whereby said piston rod reciprocates said sections.
, 15. In a box pressing machine, the combination with a female form, an ejector therein, and fluid pressure mechanism comprising a valve for operating said ejector, of a reciprocating male form and means movable with said male form for operating said valve and effecting the operation of said ejector.
