' IMPROVEMENT EN PRUNING-KNIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1142,2363, dated August 26, 1873; application filed July 14, 1873.
v To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM O. HULSE, of Palmyra, in the county of Macoupin and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Pruning-Knife; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 an end view.
The invention relates to pruning-knives; and consists in a novel mode of combining a bifurcated handle having oblique angled ends, a slotted hook-blade, and a bladed circle-plate pivoted to both in such manner as to form a pruning-knife which shall be simple, efi'ective, and durable. It also consists in a peculiar mode of adjusting the relative position of the blades to take up the gradual wear upon them.
In the drawing, A represents abifurcated handle having the ends a a at an oblique angle thereto. Between the upper ends of the ends a a is pivoted the circle plate O, that has the series of perforations c and the blade 1) rigidly attached to it. E is the hook-blade, which is placed over the branch, pivoted to the circle-plate at c, and having the long slot' 6, by which it is moved on the pivot a in handle. The hook beingplaced over a branch and the handle pulled, the latter moves down, While the blade D moves up to the blade E and cuts off the twig. This device is very simple, consisting but of the handle, the slotted hook-blade, and the bladed circle-plate, can be cheaply made, and withal is little liable to get out of order. By means of the perforations in circle-plate, as the cutting-edges of knives wear, the circle-plate is pivoted to the handle ends a a in a difl'erent hole. This allows the knives to be almost entirely used up before replacement is necessary.
Havingthus described my invention, whatl claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination of the bifurcated handle A a and slotted hook-blade E with the bladed circle-plate O D, pivoted to both, as and for the purpose described.
2. The bladed circle-plate O D, having perforations, and adjustable in the handle to take up wear in the knife-edges, as set forth.
