Application filed January 6, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, EDWARD Mason WALSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monroe, in the county of Snohomish and State of \Vashington, have invented a new and useful Stamp Receiver, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a stamp receiver of that general type shown in my Patent No. 1,312,713, issued on the 12th day of August, 1919, and one object of the invention is to provide novel means whereby water may be applied to the surface whereon the stamps are to be affixed.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for mounting the stamp drum for rotation.
A further object of the invention is to provide novel means for guiding the strip of stamps.
It is within the province of .the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention show can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in top plan, a device con structed in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 2; Figure 4 is a section on the line 4et of Figure 2; Figure 5 is a section on the line 55 of Figure 2; and Figure 6 is a fragmental perspective, diagrammatic in nature, and illustrating a portion of the tank.
The numeral 1 marks a guide provided with overhanging flanges 2 spaced apart to define a slot 3. Retainers 4c are mounted on the ends of the guide 1 and serve to hold the flanges 2 against bending, at their ends. Each retainer 1 is fashioned from a single strip of metal, the ends of the strip being disposed adjacent to the slot 3. clip exercises two functions. First, it serves to hold the ends of the retainer 4 together and, secondly, because the clip is .located between the inner edges of the flanges 2, at the slot 3, the clip serves to guide the strip of stamps at each end of the member 1, and to prevent the strip of stamps from catching on the transverse edgesof the retainers 4.
The device includes a loop-shaped body 6 merging into approximately parallel arms 7. One end of the guide 1 is disposed between the arms 7. Bearing strips 8 are located at the ends of the body 6 and are provided with terminal grips '9, adapted to engage the body 6 as shown in Figure 3, the strips being removable from the body. Guards 10 are secured to the outer surfaces of the strips 8. The guards 10 project toward the adjacent end of the guide 1, and are inclined inwardly, as indicated in Figure 1. A shaft 11 is mounted at one end, as indicated at 12, in one of the members 8 and in the corresponding guard 10. The opposite guard 10 and the adjacent member 8 are provided with openings 14;, receiving the other end-of the shaft '11. A drum 15 is journaled on the shaft 11, a roll of stamps 16 being wound about the drum. Either of the bearing strips 8 may be re moved readily from the body 6 to permit the mounting of the drum 15 on the shaft 11. The stamps are reeled off the roll 16 and are extended longitudinally of the guide 1, beneath the flanges 2, the finger or the thumb of an operator, located in the slot 3, serving to advance the strip of stamps. A strip of stamps is directed into the inner end of the guide 1 by the guards 10.
The arms 7 of the body 6 are surrounded by a yoke 17 into which a clamping screw 18 is threaded. The numeral 19 denotes a tank, located beneath the guide 1. The tank 19 is slightly wedge-shaped in longitudinal section, the smaller end of the tank being inserted between one of the arms 7 and the guide 1. When the clamping screw 18 is tightened, the inner end of the tank 19 and the inner end of the guide 1 will be gripped between the arms 7. In the outer end of the tank 19, a swab 20 is mounted. Water may be inserted into the tank 19 when the swab 20 is removed.
Note Figure 6. Adjacent to its outer end, the tank 19 is slit transversely as indicated at 21, thereby forming tongues 22. The tongues 22 are bent upwardly, as shown the clasps 23 are formed in the manner indicated, the tank 19 at its outer end is cut away, as indicated at 24 in Figure 2, so that the swab 20 is given an extended area of contact with the paper to be moistened. Noting, however, the point at which the reference character 25 is applied in Figures 6 and 4, it will be observed that the upper wall of the tank 19 is left intact, at the outer end of the tank, so as to afford a backing for the swab.
In practical operation, the stamp receiver is drawn along the surface of the paper to which the stamp is to be attached, the swab 20 moistening the paper. The strip of stamps may be advanced out of the guide 1, by thumb or finger pressure applied to the strip of stamps at the slot 3. A stamp may be pressed down on the moistened surface and may be torn off by giving a slight twist to the guide 1, as the stamp is held on the moistened surface.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a
stamp guide; a tank extended longitudinally of the guide and provided with a swab located adjacent to one end of the guide; a head including arms between which the} other end of the guide and the corresponding end of the tank are received; a yoke re ceiving the arms; a clamping element in the yoke and coacting with one arm to bind the tank and the guide between the arms; and means carried by the head for supporting a roll of stamps for feeding through the guide and upon the path traversed by the swab.
2. In a device of the class described, a loop-shaped body including arms; a guide extended between the arms; bearing strips provided with grips engaging the ends of the body detachably; guards projecting from the bearing strips toward the guide; and a shaft carried by the bearing strips and constituting means for holding a roll of stamps in operative relation to the guide.
3. In a device of the class described, a guide having overhanging flanges defining a feeding slot retainers surrounding the guide and its flanges and located adjacent to the ends of the guide, each retainer being fashioned from a strip having its ends disposed at the slot; and a clip engaging the ends of each strip, the clip being located in the slot, and constituting means for guiding a ribbon of stamps with respect to the transverse edges of the strips out of which the retainers are made. 7 V
