CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
BRIDGETORT, cONN'EcTIQUT, A
BOTTLE s'ToPPEn.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that JOHN M. S. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Bridgeport,-in the countyof Fairfield and State of Connecticut, 'has invented certain new and useful .Improvements in Bottle Stoppers, of which the following is a specifi cation.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in bottle stoppers, and the object of the invention is to provide a novel and durable stopper of extremely simple construction and consisting of aminimum number of parts. 7
With the above and other objectsin view, the construction, arrangement and combination of parts constituting the stopper of the invention will now be fully described and will hereinafter be specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the stopper, together with its bail;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the stopper and bail of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the bail carrying member constituting an element of the stopper;
Fig. 41 is a top plan view of the stopper, with the bail removed; and
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view corresponding with Fig. 4.
The stopper consists of but three specially constructed parts; an elastic plu adapted to enter the neck of a bottle to filf the same and to firmly rest upon the upper edge of the bottle in ordinary manner; a sheet metal bail carrying member adapted to be socketed in the plug; and a sheet metal cap adapted to bear against the upper surface of the elastic plug and provided with an opening to receive the head of the bail carrying member. As will be made clear, the bail passes beneath the head of its carrying member, above the cap, and between the legs of the bail carrying member to effectively hold the cap to the elastic plug.
The plug may be made of any material suitable for its purpose, and comprises a cylindrical portion 10 adapted to tightly fit within the neck of a bottle and a circular shoulder portion 11 adapted to rest firmly Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jung 27, 1922- Application filed January 14, 1921. Serial No, 437,285.
upon theupper edge of the bottle.
largement 13, both of circular configuration. As hereinbefore menti'oned,the bail carrylng member is preferably made of sheet The'plug is provided with a pocket 12 having an enmetal. 'The configuration of said member is I more clearly disclosed in F igs..2 and 3, it beingof approximate inverted U-shape and consisting of a head portion 14 having legs 15 which are bent outwardly near their extremities to provide feet lfi adapted to rest snugly in the enlargement of the pocket of the plug. The outerv surfaces of the legs of the bail carrying member preferably con form in shape to the configuration of the smaller portion of the pocket in the plug, andthe feet extend in such direction from the legs that the upper and lower surfaces and the outer edges of the feet snugly engage the walls which define the enlarged portion of the pocket, as will be understood.
When it is desired to insert the bail carrying member in the plug, the legs are pressed slightly toward each other and inserted in the pocket until the feet are adjacent the enlarged portion of the pocket. The legs are then released and expand to normal position to seat the feet in the enlargement in the manner hereinbefore fully described. The pocket in the plug is of such depth that when the feet are seated in the enlargement of the pocket, the head of the U-shaped bail carrying member projects a slight distance above the upper surface of the plug. 17 denotes a cap, which, as hereinbefore mentioned, preferably consists of sheet metal. The cap is adapted to rest snugly against the upper surface of the elastic plug,
and is provided with an opening 18 adapted to freely receive the head and a portion of the legs of the bail carrying member, thus firmly bear against the entire surface of the plug. The plug, which is necessarily more or less elastic, is thus reinforced and rigidly held to the bottle, and the tighter the bail may be drawn, the tighter will the cap grip the plug, as will be evident.
It will be seen that I have provided a dependable stopper consisting of but few parts, none of the metal elements of which are required to be cast, the bail consisting of ordinary wire, and the cap and hail carrying member being preferably'icomposed of sheet metal which readily lends itself to stamping in the production of these last mentioned elements.
hat I desire to claim is:
1. A stopper consisting of an elastic plug provided With a pocket having an enlargement, a bail carrying member of inverted U-shape and comprising a head having legs from Which feet extend in opposite directions, said legs adapted to enter said pocket and said feet adapted to seat in said enlargement, and said head adapted to project beyond said plug, a cap adapted to rest upon the plug and provided With an opening to receive said head and a portion of said legs, said head, cap and legs defining a passageway, and a bail adapted to snugly fit said passageway.
2. A stopper consisting of a plug adapted to fit a bottle, said plug having a pocket provided with an enlargement, aresilient U-shaped bail carrying member comprising a head having legs from which feet extend in opposite directions, said legs adapted to enter said pocket and to exert a yieldingpressure against the Wall thereof and said feet adapted to snugly seat in said en largement, whereby said bail carrying mem her is removably seated in said plug, and said head adapted to project beyond said plug, a cap adapted to rest upon said plug and provided With an opening to receive said head and a portion of said legs, said head, cap and legs defining a passageway, and a bail adapted to snugly fit said passageway and to normally bear against said cap.
Signed at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, this 29th day of December A. D. 1920.
